Abstract: Records, mainly 1948-1992, of an independent leftist newspaper originally known as the National Guardian and established by James Aronson, Cedric Belfrage and John T. McManus in 1948. After reorganization in 1967 as a worker cooperative and a name change to the Guardian, the paper was a Marxist-Leninist organ. It ceased publication in 1992. The paper's early history is documented primarily by a reference library of publicity materials issued by numerous domestic social action and political organizations, labor unions, and foreign governments and advocacy groups. Among the topics are the civil rights of African Americans; the House Un-American Activities Committee; and numerous individual civil liberties, loyalty oath, and sedition cases. Also included are small quantities of photographic prints and negatives documenting staff and staff events as well as the work of staff photographers, 1951-1967, consisting only of contact sheets.

Abstract: Guilford M. Wiley served as the principal of La Crosse Central High School from 1921-1926 and as the La Crosse Superintendent of Schools from 1926-1942. Wiley later became involved in politics and served from 1946-1950 in the Wisconsin State Legislature as Republican member of the Assembly from Trempealeau County. In 1952, he was an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor. Wiley passed away in 1955. Materials in the collection include correspondence (1931-1933; 1945-1954), scattered issues of the La Crosse Central High Tribune (1922; 1928), miscellaneous materials (ca. 1938-1954), materials from the National Council of Presbyterian Men (1943-1954), newspaper clippings arranged by topic (1939-1954), materials from Wiley's political career (1949-1954), twenty photographic postcards depicting the evangelist Reverend Billy Sunday (ca. 1908), and a newspaper clipping scrapbook (1938-1939) containing articles pertaining to the La Crosse public schools.

Abstract: Papers of a two-term Wisconsin Assembly representative (Republican from Trempealeau County) and school administrator, and of his wife, Beulah Arnold Wiley. Included are incomplete files of correspondence, mainly concerning legislative matters; bills and proposed legislation; materials collected for legislative reference; a few files related to his career as school superintendent and education in general; personal diaries; and school notebooks of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley.

Abstract: Papers of Gunder Larsen, a Winnebago County farmer that emigrated to Wisconsin from Norway in 1849. Papers include Larsen's 12 diaries recording his family history and work experience. The diaries also include transcriptions of his Civil War experience serving with the 32nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry describing his participation in battles including Sherman's March to the Sea. Also included are 2 photograph reprints and family history written by Larsen in 1915 and detailing his trade as a farmer with his father, Samuel, on neighboring farmland in Winchester, Wisconsin, during the mid-1800s. The family history also includes copies of Larsen's Civil War correspondence to his wife and children while serving in Tennessee and Alabama (1863-1864).

Abstract: Fragmentary papers of Gunnar Back, a radio and television news broadcaster, including biographical clippings, photographs, scripts and other writings, publicity, photographs, sound and video recordings, and correspondence. Well documented programs include Cross Fire which includes recorded interviews with Chester Bowles, Paul Douglas, Charles A. Halleck, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Reuther, Alexander Wiley, and others. Documenting Back's expertise in radio documentaries are transcripts, recorded broadcasts, and additional recorded interviews for a series on alcoholism and venereal disease. General news and entertainment scripts and newsletters document work for KFAB/KFOR in Lincoln, Nebraska, and WJSV in Washington, D.C. Individuals featured in the general reportage include William O. Douglas and Gen. Walter Bedell Smith; topics covered include Germany and Vietnam. The correspondence consists primarily of audience reactions to the cancellation of Cross Fire and Congress Today and to coverage of the Army-McCarthy hearings. Also included are drafts and notes for articles about Don Ameche, Ralph Bellamy, and Spencer Tracy written for the Collegiate Digest and other publications while a student at the University of Wisconsin. The photographs are primarily snapshots of Back broadcasting. Most are unidentified, but there are snapshots of him with Marian Anderson, Tom Ewell, Hubert Humphrey, Estes Kefauver, Robert Kennedy, Henry Cabot Lodge, Nelson Rockefeller, and Robert Taft Jr., and at work at KFAB/KFOR in Nebraska, at WJNO in Florida, and in Germany. Two signed photographs of Obie Newcombe Jr. show marines fighting on Tarawa. Films and videotapes received with the collection including interviews with Marian Anderson, Pearl Buck, Jimmy Durante, Helen Hayes, Stan Musial, Richard Nixon, and Ed Wynn as part of These Are Americans (WFIL) are unprocessed.

Abstract: Records of the Gross Family dairy farm in Rhinelander, Wisconsin consisting of agricultural testing reports, tax records, farm account books, and information and applications for the U.S. Department of Agriculture “cost sharing” conservation program. The bulk of the materials relate to the farm's financial accounts, including operating costs and income, for the years 1956 through 1968.

Abstract: Papers of Gustave Buchen, a Republican Wisconsin state senator from 1942-1951, including mostly correspondence, 1941-1951; an autobiography; clippings, 1943-1947; speeches, 1915-1949; committee reports; and an unfinished manuscript about the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The correspondence concerns Buchen's sponsorship of several bills on mental health and conservation. There are also some letters pertaining to his book Historic Sheboygan County, published in 1944.

Abstract: Brief papers of Emerson, a New York banker and philanthropist, primarily documenting his public relations activities in support of Theodore Roosevelt's Non-Partisan League Presidential campaign in 1916 and his work as secretary of the Emergency Employment Relief Committee of New York City in 1930-1931, and other civic interests. Included are correspondence with Theodore Roosevelt and others, clippings, press releases, and literature. Also included is a transcript of congressional testimony concerning his fundraising in behalf of Calvin Coolidge in 1924. In addition there are publicity materials about the 1922 convention of the American Bankers Association; the Association of Reserve City Bankers of which he was president, 1930-1931; the World War I Liberty Loan campaign of which he was the secretary; and the American Red Cross, 1948-1950. A small amount of material touches on Emerson's activities as a trustee of the Kress Foundation. His interest in conservation is documented by an account of a 1936 birding expedition in California with Roger Tory Peterson. A small number of photographs relate to the Roosevelt Non-Partisan League. Additional photographs bound with the papers document the Emergency Unemployment Committee.

Abstract: Interviews with foreign correspondents working in Southeast Asia conducted by Guy Terry Meiss for his dissertation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the methodology and philosophy of the foreign correspondent. Interviewees discuss story generation, relations with sources such as the CIA and embassy contacts, communication with editors, and their philosophy of journalism. Most interviews are accompanied by a typed or handwritten index to the interview.

Personal and professional papers, including correspondence, sermons, copies of diary pages, and other writings including chapters of an unpublished book on American religion, news clippings, and photographs. Guy Yoakum was the father of Robert Yoakum, a writer and syndicated columnist.
