Abstract: Scrapbooks of Elda (Strahm) Schiesser and her daughter Linda Schiesser documenting the projects they completed as members of the Green County 4-H. Elda Schiesser's scrapbooks, 1928-1936, document her projects in sewing, canning, baking, interior decorating, gardening, and photography. Linda Schiesser's scrapbooks document her projects between 1957 and 1964, including food and nutrition, clothing, photography, home furnishing, junior leadership, and house plants; and her attendance at the National 4-H Club Congress in 1964 in Chicago as a nominee for the National Home Economics award. Additionally, there is a scrapbook detailing Linda’s activities as a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls-Mount Horeb Assembly (1957-1972).

Abstract: Fragmentary records of the manager of a farm owned by the Anson Eldred Co., Stiles, Wisconsin, consisting of business letters concerning farm questions and the construction of a greenhouse, a few of Klauser's progress reports of the Stiles farm, 1911-1912, and scattered financial records, mainly related to the greenhouse. Family papers include personal letters from Klauser's mother and others, a partial personal diary, and memorabilia. Photographs depict the exterior and interiors of the Eldred-Klauser family home in Milwaukee, family members (some participating in amateur theatricals), and scenes of family at Wisconsin Dells.

Abstract: Papers documenting the lumber and land-related business activities of Eldridge Fowler, brother of Nettie Fowler McCormick. Fowler was a highly successful timber baron in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. His companies included Fowler & Chapman of Bay City, Michigan. He was also president of the St. Anthony Lumber Company in Minnesota, and vice-president of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. Other business interests included investments in office buildings and docks in Chicago and Duluth; the H.W. Fowler Car Wheel Company; and the Tin Mountain (mining) Company in South Dakota.

Abstract: Papers of Eleanor Jackson Piel, a New York City attorney known for handling civil rights and civil liberties cases, together with some papers of fellow attorney Philip Wittenberg that were in her custody. Selected based on legal or historical importance, the files represent a variety of types of litigation ranging from Sandra Adickes v. Kress, a precedent-setting civil rights case appealed to the Supreme Court, to numerous cases of discrimination based on gender, a Florida death penalty appeal, and numerous criminal cases of special note.

Abstract: The collection contains the papers of Eleanor Marsh who was raised on and ran a farm with her husband Elwin for over forty years. The personal journals detail her daily life as a farm wife in rural Winnebago County, Wisconsin. The early journals were sporadically kept and contain mostly farm and household accounts. The collection also contains school composition books used by Marsh and an older sister, a few letters from family and friends written after she was no longer running the farm, and newspaper clippings from her 100th and 102nd birthdays.

Abstract: Papers of Eleazer Williams, an Episcopal missionary to the Oneida Indians in New York and Green Bay, Wisconsin, who was of mixed English, French, and Indian lineage and claimed to be the “lost dauphin” of France. Williams, who lived in or near Green Bay from 1822 until 1850, was instrumental in encouraging some members of the Oneida and Stockbridge Indian tribes to immigrate to Wisconsin during the 1820s. The papers consist of materials by Williams including correspondence, 1801-1856, which pertains to his efforts to secure land for the New York Indians; his connections with land companies and French fur traders; his relationship with church and government officials; his repudiation by the Oneida Indians in 1832; and the “lost dauphin” controversy. Other materials written by Williams include autobiographies covering his life to about 1833; notes about Great Lakes geography and early exploration, fur trade, and missionary activities among the Indians, especially the Six Iroquois Nations; journals and journal fragments; sermons and notes; and a few speeches. Materials about Williams include a scrapbook, clippings, pamphlets, a small amount of correspondence to Lyman Draper from acquaintances of Williams, and an article about Williams by Albert G. Ellis. Materials in the collection collected by Williams include journals, narratives, and sermons of several of Williams' ancestors; two diaries of Mrs. Williams, 1834-1839 and 1858-1878; journals of two acquaintances, Albert G. Ellis and John Sargeant; dictionaries and documents in an Indian language, presumably Mohawk or Iroquois; fur trade accounts of Grignon, Lawe, and Porlier, 1818-1832; and almanacs, pamphlets, and books from Williams' library.

Abstract: Papers of Hooker, a Waupun, Wisconsin, attorney, land owner, and businessman. Fourteen diaries, 1846-1889, comprise the bulk of the collection and tersely record Hooker's day-to-day activities. Two of the volumes contain material relating to an oil company in which he held an interest. An expense book, 1867-1888, lists daily household expenditures. There is also one volume on the family's genealogy.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1960-1965, of a former English professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and member of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, consisting of speeches; school district reports and studies; and correspondence, minutes, reports, and clippings of the Committee on Appointment and Instruction, the Special Committee on Equality of Educational Opportunity, which studied segregation within Milwaukee schools, and other committees of the board. Also included are project proposals, reports, and research council minutes concerning the Great Cities Program for School Improvement which studied the problems of migrant and transient students in Milwaukee.

Abstract: Papers of Elisha Morrow, an early resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and receiver for the U.S. Land Office, consisting of correspondence between Morrow and Maria Bemis (whom he eventually married), Sarah Stevens, and other miscellaneous correspondence. Also included is a letter by John Mills Smith, who traveled with Elisha Morrow, detailing his first impressions of Wisconsin (1854) and a letter from Eleazer Holmes Ellis to Morrow seeking housing for several French travelers (1856). Later correspondence consists of letters of condolence to Elisha's daughter Helen after his death (1898) and other miscellaneous family correspondence, principally to Helen.

Bardwell, Elizabeth Title: Elizabeth Bardwell Papers, 1935-2002

Abstract: Papers of Elizabeth Bardwell, a Madison, Wisconsin environmentalist and journalist. Bardwell was especially concerned with urban restoration and beautification, and limiting uncontrolled urban growth. Her activities included advocating for bike paths and lanes, hiking and bridle paths, and organizing local environmental groups. She formed Capital Community Citizens in 1964. As a study of urban expansion and with the assistance of Capital Community Citizens, Bardwell researched and published the book, More is Less, in 1973. Bardwell also served as chairman of the Wisconsin Natural Beauty Council and attended the United Nations Habitat Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1976.

Abstract: Family papers of Elizabeth Comstock, a physician at Arcadia, Wisconsin. Although the collection contains a few items on medical topics, the bulk of the papers consists of correspondence, diaries, business records, scrapbooks, and genealogical notes by and about her forebears in the Comstock and Durrin families. The major portion of the papers relates to her uncle, Cyrus Ballou Comstock (1831-1910), a prominent army engineer. Also in the collection are papers of Dr. Comstock's father, Noah D. Comstock (1832-1890), who emigrated from New York State before the Civil War, went to California in 1858, then returned east to settle in Arcadia. Other portions of the collection include Civil War letters from Walter Comstock, a lieutenant in Company A, 25th U.S. Infantry, at the time of his death; and letters written by Elizabeth Comstock's brother Adam (1871-1898) while a student at the University of Wisconsin and at Gottingen University in Germany. Two record books of the S.T. and F.A. Robertson General Store at Humbird, Wisconsin, are also present.

Abstract: Correspondence of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a prominent New York communist mainly relating to her work as an organizer for the Workers Defense Union to secure justice for political prisoners, anarchists, labor agitators, and others accused of subversion during World War I. Of special note are a series of letters from persons confined in federal prisons awaiting deportation.

Abstract: Papers of Elizabeth Herfurth, a Madison, Wisconsin, teacher, organizer and president of the Teachers' Retirement Fund Association, and secretary of the board of trustees to administer the fund. The correspondence shows the organization of the drive for the passage of the law, attitudes toward it, queries concerning its administration, rulings of the attorney general, and efforts to repeal and amend the law. With these are drafts of the bill, petitions, and questionnaires, and material on pension laws in other states.

Abstract: Papers of Elizabeth "Betty" Boardman, author and pacifist, consisting of correspondence, news clippings, research notes and drafts, travel diaries, and photographs. In 1966, Boardman participated as a member of the pacifist Quaker Action Group, a group traveling by ship on the Phoenix of Hiroshima to provide medical assistance to the North Vietnamese. The United States government tried to block the group, but did not succeed until they returned and their passports were suspended. Boardman continued to advocate against the Vietnam War through speeches. In 1985, Boardman's book, The Phoenix Trip: Notes on a Quaker Mission to Haiphong, was published. The collection consists of research for the book, lectures and speeches, news clippings, pamphlets and newsletters, a travel diary from the trip, a scrapbook, campaign materials, and photographs from the book taken by Ivan Massar. Also included are tape recordings of Boardman talking about the Phoenix trip and interviews with the Phoenix crew.

Abstract: Papers of an English professor at the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee which include professional and personal correspondence, photographs, newspapers clippings, applications for research grants, reviews, notes, drafts of published works, and calendars. The calendars were used as a daily diary by Kerr. The majority of the collection concerns Kerr's study of the works of American author William Faulkner.

Abstract: Papers of Elizabeth Thérèse Fisher Baird including correspondence, land records, and newspaper articles written by Baird. The correspondence contains letters from Baird to the Waring family discussing life in and around Green Bay from 1869-1876 including a letter written after the Peshtigo Fire. The newspaper articles were from a series entitled "O-De-Jit-Wa-Win-Wing ---- Contes du Tempes Passe" published in the Green Bay State Gazette, recounting her life on Mackinac Island, Michigan and in early territorial Wisconsin. The legal records include a 1795 pension record, an indenture certificate and other legal land documents. Also includes letters in German from C.A.L. Tanks while in Fort Howard to his sister Mrs. Otto Tanks from 1875 to 1888.

Abstract: Professional papers, mainly 1932 to 1989, of Elizabeth Wickenden, a social welfare and Social Security policy consultant, analyst, and writer, and professor of public policy and urban studies. The papers document her professional positions as well as her activities as a consultant to national social welfare organizations, and her leading role in the Study Group on Social Security and the Save Our Security coalition. Also reflected are her activities as Professor of Urban Studies at the City University of New York (1966-1974) and at Fordham University (1979-1983). Issues with which she was concerned include transiency, poverty, welfare reform, welfare rights, welfare law, child protection and child welfare, Social Security and Medicare legislation, national health insurance, and unemployment compensation. There is also a small quantity of personal records and photographs, including school papers and four diaries from the 1920s and 1930s.

Abstract: Correspondence, poetry, and scrapbooks kept by Wisconsin author Ella Giles Ruddy. Correspondence for 1887 contains letters from Clara Barton, Edward Everett Hale, Rutherford B. Hayes, and others addressed to Mrs. Ruddy's father, H. H. Giles, a member of the Wisconsin State Board of Charities and Reform; and a scrapbook of clippings, 1877-1886, relates to Mr. Giles' career in public welfare work. However, most of the letters were written to Mrs. Ruddy by other contemporaries in literature and the arts: Rasmus B. Anderson, Hjalmar H. Boyesen, Hiram Corson, Zona Gale, Charles Noble Gregory, Hattie Tyng Griswold, Vinnie Ream Hoxie, Aubertine Woodward Moore, Eben E. Rexford, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, and Robert Wilson Burns. Original signed manuscripts of poems were written by Robert Wilson Burns, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Sarah D. Hobart, Minnie Stebbins Savage, and Mrs. Ruddy.

Abstract: Papers of a woman who lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in the 1870s. The collection consists largely of letters, written principally by Ellen Spaulding Miller to family members who probably lived in New York. The letters reflect domestic life, family relationships, economic conditions, lumbering, religious revivals, and health conditions in the lumbering capital of northwestern Wisconsin. The Spaulding papers also include the booklet The Christian Minister's Affectionate Advice to a Married Couple (circa 1863), eight issues of Every Child's Paper - a children's Sunday School paper, and two photographs of Jefferson Miller, Ellen Miller's husband.

Abstract: Correspondence and other records of a law firm established in Green Bay in 1890 by Eleazer Holmes Ellis and Carlton Merrill. The firm accepted all types of cases, but dealt primarily in corporate and property law. The records include files of correspondence with clients, 1890-1905; less complete information about the financial operation of the firm, 1879-1903; records of cases handled in circuit court, 1873-1894; and some records of real estate sales and the collection of rents by the attorneys, 1861-1895.

Abstract: Papers of Ellis Baker Usher, a La Crosse, Wisconsin, newspaperman, historian, and Democratic Party leader, consisting of political correspondence, and records of his newspaper business and of several local organizations with which he was involved. Most of the incoming correspondence is for the years 1887-1888, and deals primarily with details of the management of the William Henry Harrison Presidential campaign, and includes letters from Edward C. Wall, William F. Vilas, and Frank P. Coburn. Usher's correspondents in 1896 and shortly after included an increasing number of Stalwart Republican leaders in Wisconsin, among whom were Joseph Babcock, Ira Bradford, John Esch, and Elisha Keyes. Other correspondents include Wendell Anderson, Edward Bragg, Will Brawley, Joshua Dodge, Charles Felker, Charles Jonas, John Knight, John L. Mitchell, George Peck, and Clarence Snyder. The Journalism papers, 1872-1899, concern the La Crosse Liberal Democrat and its successor, the La Crosse Morning Chronicle. The early records were created by Usher, but the volumes of letters sent and financial records dating from the 1890s were created by Manager T. A. Goodrich. Papers dealing with La Crosse history include correspondence from John Esch, James H. Davidson, and others concerning the Upper Mississippi River Improvement Association and from Charles E. Brown about the Wisconsin Archaeological Society; there are also clipping scrapbooks concerning both organizations. Records which were collected rather than created by Usher include a register of federal ad valorum taxes paid by La Crosse businesses during the Civil War which give individual occupations, the value of items produced, and the assessment.

Abstract: Manuscripts, still images, audio and visual recordings pertaining to the service of Robert Ellison, who photographed the Vietnam War, and his father, Albert Ellison, who served during World War II. Robert Jackson Ellison was a freelance photographer who was killed in a plane crash while covering the war in Vietnam. Materials pertaining to Robert include letters to his family and friends, as well as letters he received from family and friends. Robert kept letters he received and underlined important things he wanted to answer or address, then stapled these to copies of the letters he sent to his family and friends. Most of his letters focus on his work in Vietnam and his opinions of the war and the country. Also included is Robert's diary, in which he recorded his daily activities and opinions of Vietnam. The large part of Robert's materials are photographs, photonegatives, slides and publications. Of interest are images from Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, featuring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his companions. Robert took many photographs of the Civil Rights movement all over the United States, including a Neo-Nazi, White-Power rally in Illinois. Other important events Robert photographed include a 1964 anti-war rally in Washington, D.C. with World War I and II veterans protesting the Vietnam War. Other photographs and negatives include images from his time in Vietnam, mostly pertaining to specific stories he worked on. A few color photographs capture his last weeks at Khe Sanh. Color slides include his time at school, including wildlife and car racing, the Korean Crisis during the Vietnam war and Jackie Kennedy's visit to Cambodia. Publications include Newsweek, Time, Ebony and True Magazines, all of which contracted with Robert and purchased his photographs for publication. Albert Jackson Ellison, an Ames, Iowa, resident served in the 511th Airborne as a paratrooper during World War II. Materials pertaining to Albert Ellison are mostly letters written to his family and his wife, Miriam. Letters to Miriam cover his boat journey to New Guinea in 1944, training he received in New Guinea and his life in the Philippines. A telegram from December 1944 was sent to Miriam to inform her that Albert had been wounded. Other materials pertaining to Albert's service include a photograph and several negatives of Albert, most likely while he was stationed in the South Pacific. In July 1945, Albert was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.

Abstract: Papers, 1937-2001, of Elmer Henderson, a Baltimore native and lawyer who served on Roosevelt's Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) (1941-1948) which was responsible for integrating black workers into war industries. The bulk of the collection relates to Henderson's work with the FEPC, principally his role as a regional director in Chicago (1942-1946). Also included are materials from Henderson's work with the Illinois State Commission on the Condition of the Urban Colored population, the American Council on Human Rights (ACHR), and political involvement with the Democratic National Committee and Stevenson's 1956 presidential campaign with regard to African-American issues.

Abstract: Miscellaneous personal papers of the former Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee professor and chair of the Art Department, including audio cassette tapes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and slides. The majority of the papers document Ulbricht's involvement with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Handicraft Project in Milwaukee, which employed workers to make draperies, books, dolls, costumes, furniture, rugs, and prints. Some files were contemporary with the Handicraft Project; others were produced at a later date. Ulbricht's records of the Handicraft Project include scrapbooks on the design and use of marionettes and puppets for project staff and general administrative files. Ulbricht's correspondence files, dating from 1909 to 1978, contain letters to and from friends and colleagues on a variety of topics, including personal and professional activities and some discussion of the Handicraft Project. The collection also contains Ulbricht's notes, text, and drawings and plates for an unpublished book entitled A Crafts Philosophy, and files on her activities at the Summer School of Painting in Saugatuck, Michigan, which she directed.

Strong, a theatrical manager associated with various local troups and touring companies in the Midwest including the Madison Civic Theatre, the Elwin Strong Select Players, and various Federal Theatre Project groups in Nebraska. Included are printed and mimeographed scripts distributed by play services and some scripts in handwritten form thought to be by Strong. Some include scripts for individual parts and property lists. Also included are scripts, advertising material, and sheet music distributed by the T.S. Denison Company for minstrel shows.
