The collection documents Dr. James Albrecht's opposition to Medicare/Medicaid, his efforts to reduce alcoholism in Washington County, and his work to form a National Day of Prayer in 1970. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, writings and sermons, and biographies describing Dr. Albrecht's activities. The collection also includes family photographs and a few materials relating to the artwork of Dr. Albrecht's late wife, Marian.

Collection includes documents, CD-ROMs. Call Number: uac100 Abstract: The Brazil Initiative collection was compiled by Professor Emeritus Severino J. Albuquerque to document the 2009 conference "Nabuco in Wisconsin" in 2009 which was held on the 100th anniversary of the Brazilian diplomat and abolitionist's 1909 visit to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The collection also documents the activities of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Brazil initiative which began in 2009 as a result of the Nabuco conference and continued operations until 2016.

Alcohol Problems Council of Wisconsin	Title: Alcohol Problems Council of Wisconsin Records, 1948-1991 Quantity: 2.4 c.f. (6 archives boxes), 48 photographs, and 6 negatives Call Number: Mss 942; PH Mss 942 Abstract: Records of a non-profit corporation established for the purpose of conducting a statewide educational program on alcohol. The organization became incorporated as the Wisconsin Temperance Movement in 1948. The Wisconsin Temperance Movement, the Wisconsin Temperance Federation (previously called the Wisconsin Anti-Saloon League), and the Wisconsin Temperance Education Association merged on January 1, 1952 to create a united temperance front in Wisconsin. The new organizational name changed to United Temperance Movement of Wisconsin and changed again to the Alcohol Problems Council of Wisconsin on April 7, 1966. Office headquarters have been in Milwaukee, Whitewater, and currently in Madison. The records include minutes of the Council's Executive Committee; office correspondence; financial records; newsletters and other publications relating to temperance and alcohol problems; photographs; and assorted files which document public and outreach activities and operations of APCW throughout its history.

Also includes an extract with translation of Pierre Sonnerat's 1782 book Voyage aux indes Orientales et a la Chine, and genealogical materials on the Alden and Brewster families, especially James Alden who became an admiral in the Civil War.
Alexander Ahab Arnold, 1833-1915	Title: Alexander Ahab Arnold Papers, 1855-1940 Quantity: 3.2 c.f. (8 archives boxes) Call Number: La Crosse Mss M; La Crosse Mss AK; La Crosse Mss BM Abstract: Papers of a Galesville, Wisconsin, farmer-politician and members of his family: Mary Douglas Arnold, his wife; Gerald C. and Archibald H. Arnold, his sons; and Beulah Arnold Wiley, his daughter. Alexander Arnold's papers consist of brief-entry diaries, correspondence, and financial records pertaining to his law practice in Ohio, his work as a surveyor for the Town of Gale, and his farm and livestock breeding service. There are also detailed records kept as captain of the Thirtieth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Mary Douglas Arnold's files, also consisting of diaries and correspondence, document her involvement in various organizations such as the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and the women's suffrage movement. Gerald D. and Archibald H. files contain miscellaneous papers on the livestock breeding service inherited from their father and on various patents which they held on farm machinery. Beulah Arnold Wiley's papers focus on her education at Rockford College and her career as a teacher.
Alexander Defense Committee	Title: Alexander Defense Committee Records, 1962-1971 Quantity: 3 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 768 Abstract: Records of the Alexander Defense Committee, an international organization (1964-1968) formed to protest apartheid and to support Dr. Neville Alexander and other South African political prisoners. In the collection are correspondence, newsletters, clippings, promotional material for national speaking tours, and files on ADC chapters in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Also present are speeches and writings of I. B. Tabata and Franz J. T. Lee, who toured the United States to raise funds for the group and for the families of the prisoners; papers documenting ADC's role in the deportation case of W. M. Tsotsi; and scattered records of other organizations supporting the ADC such as the American Committee on Africa and Unity Movement of South Africa. Most papers are written in English, but others are in German, French, Dutch, and an African language, possibly Xhosa.

Call Number: WVM Mss 5 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Dorothy Dannies Alexander, who served as an officer and company commander in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II from 1942 to 1944 and was active in the Milwaukee chapter of the WAC Veterans Association. Papers from her service as a WAC officer include correspondence, personnel records, and a 1942 WAC officer training script. Five scrapbooks with numerous newspaper clippings and other memorabilia document her career, life at the military bases at which she served, and the broader world of the WAC. WAC Veterans Association papers include correspondence, convention business and activities documents, and newspaper clippings. Held in Milwaukee, the 1949 and 1965 WAC Veterans Association conventions are particularly well documented, as Alexander was instrumental in the organization of those conventions. The collection also contains a scrapbook and 1972 correspondence of Alice Watson, of Riverside, California, who served under Alexander in the WAC and was also active in the WAC Veterans Association. The correspondence includes reminiscences about the WAC and the scrapbook contains photographs taken at WAC Veterans Association conventions. The photographs in this collection document life at the three posts where Alexander served: Camp Grant (Illinois), Fort Custer (Michigan), and Camp McCoy (Wisconsin). Included are many candid and posed photographs of WAC soldiers at work and recreation, inspection visits by superior officers, and a 1944 WAC field services event in Wausau, Wisconsin. The WAC Veterans Association photographs are mostly posed groups from conventions from the 1940s to 1960s. The collection also includes a small number of personal photographs.
Alexander, Ray A., 1927-	Title: Ray A. Alexander Papers, 1972-1988 Quantity: .2 cubic ft. (1 box) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 192 Abstract: This collection contains Ray A. Alexander's papers pertaining to his work as executive director of the Afro Urban Institute beginning in 1970. The Afro Urban Institute is a tax exempt, non-profit community development corporation for the Milwaukee black community. The Ray A. Alexander Papers consist of documents pertaining to various businesses and programs that the Afro Urban Institute helped establish. This collection includes donor solicitations; publications, including Business Insight and the Tal-N-Art Consortium, Inc. Times newsletters; correspondence; meeting minutes; and program evaluations referring to projects such as the Cheops Construction Company, Apex Cab Company, the Economic Development Center, the Northside Community Design Center, and the Career Opportunities Preparation program, aimed towards junior high school students to encourage education and future business operation and participation. This collection highlights some of the Afro Urban Institute's earlier work and illustrates the tenacity and dedication which Alexander and the Afro Urban Institute needed to conduct business during the 1970s.

The collection consists of handwritten correspondence, postcards, and a personal diary, as well as some typewritten university records.
Algoma Community Health Association	Title: Algoma Community Health Association Records, 1931-1956 Quantity: 0.4 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 154 Abstract: Records of a private community agency organized to promote public health, focusing particularly though not exclusively on school children, through preventive medicine and education programs. Some of the agency's activities included dental surveys; skin-testing and x-raying for tuberculosis; vaccination and immunization clinics; and well-baby clinics. The collection consists of administrative records, correspondence, and reports, including the group's constitution; minutes of Board of Directors meetings and annual public meetings; notes for Board of Directors meetings; general correspondence as well as correspondence with the State Board of Health and the Wisconsin Anti-Tuberculosis Association, particularly concerning the annual Christmas Seals campaign; reports from immunization clinics and from the public health nurses, and reports to the Algoma City Council. The nurses' reports are bound in a volume that also contains minor financial records, such as cash disbursements.
Algoma Hardwoods, Inc. (Algoma, Wis.)	Title: Algoma Hardwoods, Inc., Records, 1892-1974 Quantity: 20.0 c.f. (33 archives boxes, 5 record center cartons, and 8 flat boxes) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 57 Abstract: Ownership and management records of an Algoma hardwood plywood manufacturing firm. The firm has undergone several mergers and name changes since its organization as the Ahnapee Veneer and Seating Company in 1892: Algoma Panel Company (1916); Algoma Plywood and Veneer Company (1931); Algoma Division, United States Plywood (1940); Algoma Division, United States Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc. (1967); Algoma Hardwoods, Inc. (1977). The records document most aspects of the company's operations, with the exception of the activities of the board of directors, including correspondence and legal documents relating to stockholders and mergers; general management correspondence; financial records including general, sales, production, and employees accounts covering all aspects of the company's operations; correspondence and legal documents regarding legal cases; correspondence, legal documents, and deeds of real estate owned by the company; and correspondence, working papers, and income tax returns for federal and state taxes. Following the close of the plant in 1976 by U.S. Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc., local citizens purchased the plant and reopened it in March 1977.

Allen, Chester (1887-1960)	Title: Chester Allen collection Quantity: 11.0 Linear Feet 11 record storage cartons Paper records such as correspondence, memoranda, internal and external reports, meeting minutes, newsletters, magazines, articles, manuscripts, statistical data, syllabi, fliers, brochures, posters, conference programs, and conference proceedings Call Number: uac94 Abstract: This collection provides a thorough overview of the programs of the University Extension Field Organization, or Field Services Division, and the activities of individual Field Representatives or Agents from 1911-1958, with particular emphasis on the period from 1926 to 1954 when Chester Allen served as Director of Field Services. Chester Allen (1887 - 1960) served as Director of Field Services of the University Extension Division from 1926 to 1954. He developed prison education programs, outreach programs such as High School Days, and advocated for regulation of correspondence study programs as a member of the Governor's Educational Advisory Committee. The Field Representatives he managed oversaw outreach activities, taught select courses and workshops, and managed correspondence study courses and on-the-job training programs. The materials include correspondence, memoranda, internal and external reports, meeting minutes, newsletters, magazines, articles, manuscripts, statistical data, syllabi, fliers, brochures, posters, conference programs, and conference proceedings.
Allen, Donna	Title: Donna Allen Papers, 1960-1987 Quantity: 4.9 c.f. Call Number: M92-226; M95-274; M2000-028 Abstract: Papers of peace and civil liberties activist Donna Allen, who began her activism with Women Strike for Peace (WSP) in the 1950s. The collection documents her involvement with many groups, most notably Women Strike for Peace and National Conference for New Politics, of which she was a member of the executive board. Also reflected in the papers is Allen's heavy involvement in the anti-Vietnam War movement, especially with Women Strike for Peace and the Washington Mobilization Committee. Additionally, the collection includes the anti-Vietnam War files of fellow activist Margaret Russell (Women Strike for Peace).

Allen, Gideon Winan, 1825-1912	Title: Gideon Winan Allen Papers, 1862-1867, 1872 Quantity: 1 reel of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 15 Abstract: Correspondence of Gideon Winan Allen, who during the Civil War years was a student at the universities of Wisconsin and Michigan and was later a lawyer in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The letters, primarily between Allen and his wife, Annie M. Cox, reflect the viewpoint of a northern Democrat, a Copperhead, concerning politics, military events, Negroes, and the draft. The 1872 letters were written during a trip to the South and are an appraisal of post-war conditions in rural and urban areas and describe an unfavorable reception for a northern lawyer.

The papers document Allen's work at NBC, including information from government sources concerning allowable coverage and NBC's cooperation with other news organizations.

Call Number: Mss 327; Audio 542A; PH 6486 Abstract: Papers of a feminist writer and lecturer active in a number of radical women's liberation groups, who changed her name from Pamela Allen to Chude Pamela Allen. The collection contains correspondence, writings, tape recordings of a 1971 Chico State College Teach-in, and subject files on a number of groups in which Allen participated. The correspondence includes discussion of the Jeannette Rankin Brigade, the Bridal Fair action of 1969 (and 3 related photographs), a Miss America Pageant demonstration, International Women's Day, and Sudsofloppen, a small feminist group in San Francisco. Also included are materials related to Allen's civil rights work in Mississippi in 1964 and her work with the Women's Alliance to Gain Equality (W.A.G.E.).

Allen, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism best known for his association with Drew Pearson, 1932-1942, in the nationally-syndicated column, “Washington Merry-Go-Round,” and for his own column, “Inside Washington,” published from 1949 to 1977. The collection includes mimeographed releases of his columns, microfilmed news stories written for the Philadelphia Record (1936-1942), a treatment for a film biography of General George S. Patton with whom Allen had served during World War II, freelance articles, radio scripts, and other writings. Several folders concern Allen's book, Lucky Forward, about the Third Army and the plagiarism suit he brought against Patton biographer Ladislas Farago. An extensive reporter's journal, 1941-1977, documents private conversations and interviews with the nation's leading political figures, 1941-1942 and 1949-1972. The photographs document both Allen's military and journalism careers.

Allen family, a nineteenth-century academic family. The collection contains journals, correspondence, and writings. Papers are mainly of William Francis Allen and his second wife Margaret Andrews Allen, as well as some papers of their children, Katherine, Andrews, William Ware, and Philip Loring. The writings of William Francis document his personal life including a trip to Europe (1854-1856); and his professional career as a Freedmen's teacher in St. Helena Island, South Carolina, including several Negro spirituals and a couple of photographs (1863-1864); as an agent for the Sanitary Commission in Arkansas (1864-1865); and as professor of ancient languages at Antioch College (1865) and then of history and ancient languages at the University of Wisconsin (1867-1889). Margaret's papers include articles for and about children, and correspondence. The family papers also include genealogical information on the Allens, the Clarkes, and the Wares, as well as carte-de-visite portraits of family members.

Allis, Louis, 1866-1950	Title: Louis Allis Papers, 1843-1950 Quantity: 11 reels of microfilm (35mm), 318 negatives, and 32 copy negatives Call Number: Milwaukee Micro 71; Micro 2036; PH Milwaukee Micro 71 Abstract: Personal papers, mainly 1883-1938, of a member of a prominent Milwaukee family and president of the Louis Allis Company. The collection consists almost entirely of outgoing personal letters, although occasional items relate to financial investments, real estate management, and oversight of the Mechanical Appliance Co. (the forerunner of the Louis Allis Company). Only scattered letters relate to the E.P. Allis Co. or to Allis family interests in its successor company, the Allis-Chalmers Company. A large portion of the personal correspondence concerns Allis' first wife Carol Yates (from whom he was divorced in 1907); the rearing and education of their son, Edward P. Allis III; the management of the Louis Allis home; golf and other recreational activities; the beginning of the Milwaukee Country Club; the purchase and maintenance of automobiles; and the lives of other members of the Allis and Yates families. Six scrapbooks document the family's interest in golf, with scattered items relating to the E. P. Allis and Louis Allis companies, and the extended family. All of this material is available only on microfilm. Also on microfilm but partially copied photographically is an album of interior views of the E.P. Allis Co. factory, 1894. The collection also includes negatives selected from Allis' work as an amateur photographer which are not on microfilm and available only in Madison.

The interviews discuss their pre-war circumstances, war-time experiences, post-war resettlement, and subsequent events in their lives. These experiences include deportation to labor and concentration camps, hiding “underground” in Holland and Germany, internment in Italy, slave-labor in Russia, escape to Shanghai, China, and other war-time events. Discussion of their post-war experiences concerns years in displaced persons camps, internment on Cyprus, temporary residences in Sweden, England, and Israel, and resettlement in the United States. Also included are two interviews with United States citizens who worked with displaced persons after the war. The photographs document the families of the survivors before and immediately after World War II. Also included are color transparencies of the survivors photographed by Historical Society staff, from December 1979 through February 1981, as well as copies of photographs supplied by the survivors.

The collection documents administrative activities, financial responsibilities, fundraising and grant activities of the parent organization in administering its programs, the level and kind of parental involvement, and the teachers’ roles at the schools.

Altmeyer who as member and chairman of the Social Security Board and as Commissioner of Social Security guided the development of the federal social security program from 1935 to 1953. In addition he served as a member of the executive committee of the National Youth Administration (NYA), 1935; member of the Interdepartmental Committee to Coordinate Health and Welfare Activities, 1935-1940; member of the War Manpower Commission, 1942-1945; and United States delegate to several international conferences and organizations. The papers primarily relate to Altmeyer's work in the federal government and his later consulting work, with the major portions pertaining to his administration of the Social Security Act. Correspondence, memoranda, and reports chiefly concern the National Recovery Administration, 1933-1934; the National Health Conference, 1938; the United States Employment Service, 1939-1949; unemployment compensation, 1940-1949; public assistance, 1938-1953; and old-age and survivors' insurance (OASI), 1937-1953. (1 box ) 1 oversize folder Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 222 Abstract: Collection consists of thirty-six photographs documenting the Latino civil rights movement in Milwaukee from the late 1960s through the 1970s. The photos document several aspects of El Movimiento ("The Movement" in English) including rallies, hearings, artworks, the Brown Berets, key individuals (including Cesar Chavez and Father Groppi), and public demonstrations in both Milwaukee and Madison. The photos were intended for use in the political community newspaper La Guardia, and were given to Juan Alvarez by Charlie Quesada (former editor of La Guardia) in the mid 1970s. Most of the photographs were taken by Chuck Miller. Collection also includes the October 1969, issue of La Guardia and three newspaper clippings from Soul City Times showing 1970 welfare demonstrations.
