Abstract: Initially a bilingual newspaper, Voces de la Frontera became a member-based community organization of low-wage workers, immigrants, and young people, focusing on immigrant, civil, and workers' rights. Records from the organization consist of administrative files, minutes, newspapers, fundraising materials, grant files, protest posters, and photographs. Records are primarily in English, with some in Spanish.

Abstract: Recordings and a report produced by Jim Voegeli, a student at the University of Wisconsin, from his research on environmentalist Aldo Leopold which culminated in a 1976 broadcast on National Public Radio, “Remembering Aldo Leopold.” Included are recorded interviews with Leopold family members, friends, students, and colleagues; the NPR broadcast; and a 1950 symphony by Gunnar Johansen inspired by Leopold's Sand County Almanac. The paper report includes a summary of the project, a script of the broadcast, a transcript of the recorded interview with Leopold's secretary Alice Harper Stokes, and a written reminiscence by Arthur Ringland, a friend of Leopold's and a forester with him in New Mexico in 1909.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1949-1979, of an Illinois socialist and historian about his involvement in various organizations in the left wing of the Socialist movement in the United States. Included are convention records, policy papers, minutes, correspondence, and other papers on the Libertarian Socialist League and the Socialist Party USA (SP USA), which Vogel helped to found (1949 and 1973, respectively) and the Debs Caucus and Illinois chapter of the Socialist Party-Social Democratic Federation (SP-SDF), as well as miscellaneous papers on other organizations and committees such as the Citizens Party of Illinois, the Proletarian Party, the Independent Socialist League, and the Young Communist League. In addition, there is extensive correspondence with socialists around the country deriving from his work, 1973-1974, as editor of the SP USA discussion bulletin, Hammer and Tongs. Prominent correspondents in the collection include party officials and members Abraham Bassford, William O. Hart, David McReynolds, Bill Munger, Burton Rosen, Carl Shier, Harry Siitonen, Tad Tekla, Lee Webster, and Frank Zeidler.

Abstract: Legislative papers, mainly 1985-1990, of John A. Volk, a former Democratic representative (1983-1990) from Wabena, Wisconsin. Included are constituent correspondence, speeches, newsletters, clippings about Volk's legislative activities, and subject files about legislation concerning a variety of statewide and district topics such as the lumber industry and Menominee Indian treaty rights. Additional files relate to his co-chairmanship of the Joint Survey Committee on Retirement Systems (JSCRS) and the Retirement Research Committee (RRC), 1985-1988. About his JSCRS responsibilities there are handwritten notes; memoranda prepared by Blair Testin, director of the RRC; testimony and information on bills that dealt with early retirement of teachers and public employees and divestment of state holdings in South Africa; and correspondence with State Taxpayers Outraged about Pensions (STOP) and other opponents and proponents of legislation concerning retirement benefits.

Abstract: Papers of members of the Von Kaas family, a well-to-do family which migrated to Chicago and Sheboygan County, Wisconsin in the mid-1800's. The collection primarily includes correspondence, journals and travel diaries, and other papers of Georg Carl August Baron von Kaas (1805-1868), of his second wife, Mathilda (nee Deckner), and their children and relatives. Carl von Kaas at one point served as administrator (Oberforstmeister) of the forests and estates of Prince Georg Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe, as well as Councillor of the Exchequer. Most of the original letters and documents are in German, with English translations; a few originals are in English. There is also a genealogy and a group of typed translations of very early family records, apparently compiled by von Kaas family members in the Sheboygan area (possibly for a family reunion in 1979).

Abstract: Papers of Leonard B. Von Spach, a Wauwatosa, Wisconsin resident who pursued a varied career in the military, business, and government. Documents concern his activities in rescue and relief in Macedonia with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA); in work for the Greek War Relief Association; in Wisconsin Democratic politics including an unsuccessful 1934 campaign for secretary of state; and in the American Legion. The bulk of the papers cover the period 1932-1960 and document both personal and professional aspects of his life. They consist of correspondence, subject files, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and a recorded interview by Dick Strout with Dimitri Bitsios, Greek representative to the United Nations. Prominent correspondents include entertainer Jack Benny, Charles A. Mills of the American Legion, Senator F. Ryan Duffy, Wisconsin Governor Orland S. Loomis, Wisconsin State Supreme Court Justice J. D. Wickem, and Wendell L. Willkie.

Abstract: Microfilmed papers of Mary Heaton Vorse, a journalist and author known for her championship of trade unionism. Included are materials on three strikes in the textile industry covered by Vorse during the late 1920's. The majority of the papers are concerned with a strike in Gastonia, North Carolina. Included are correspondence, notes, news dispatches to Tass and the New York Evening Graphic, typescripts of articles, and the manuscript and final typescript for her novel Strike! (1930). Relating to strikes in Marion, North Carolina, and Elizabethton, Tennessee, are miscellaneous notes, clippings, and press releases.
