The campaign materials include a newspaper clipping announcing St. Angelo's decision to seek the assembly seat in 1960 and two campaign brochures dated 1960 and 1962 respectively. The correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection and is composed of alphabetical constituent correspondence and St. Angelo's replies for the years 1962-1963. Among the subjects discussed are lowering the drinking age, the sales tax and oleo margarine controversies, the problems of maintaining effective education in northern Wisconsin, and retention of the Barron County Teachers College in Rice Lake. |

Materials of the School of Nursing include historical photographs, newspaper clippings about the school and students, bulletins and promotional materials, handbooks for students, biographical information on nursing faculty, clippings and other miscellaneous information about St. Francis Hospital. (1 folder) Call Number: Green Bay Micro 5; Green Bay Micro 22; Green Bay SC 109; Micro 488; Micro 731 Abstract: Records of a church and its founders, an association of Roman Catholic emigrants from Freiburg, Germany, led by Father Ambrose Oschwald, who sought a religious environment and practiced a communal economic system. Available in paper form is a copy of the articles of agreement governing the colony and a newsclipping on finding the articles in Manitowoc County, Wis., Circuit Court files. On microfilm is a published history, a chronicle book, financial records, a pastor's diary (1884-1890), and records of land transactions and other activities. Much of the collection is in German. The collection documents the establishment of the village of St. Nazianz in 1854, building of the church in 1866, dissension within the church over communal property ownership and transfer of property to a corporate entity known as the Roman Catholic Religious Society of St. Nazianz, and an 1896 agreement with the Society of the Divine Savior in Rome to provide spiritual and temporal care for members in exchange for property rights. |

The collection includes legal papers from the three lawsuits involved: the original suit, Stamler v. Willis; the Committee's criminal contempt of Congress suit, United States v. Stamler; and a counterclaim, Stamler v. Mitchell. The lawsuits were joined by Dr. Stamler's research assistant, Yolanda Hall, and intervening plaintiff Milton M. Cohen. Also present are a few personal materials, and research materials created and collected by Stamler's lawyers, Albert E. Jenner Jr., Thomas P. Sullivan, and Chester Kamin. Included is a major statistical study conducted by Dr. Hans Zeisel, University of Chicago, of the effects of the Committee's subpoena power and the results of testifying or refusing to testify at a HUAC hearing. In 1973, after the House Committee on Committees unanimously recommended that the government's lawsuit be dropped and the Committee be eliminated, the contempt suit was dismissed at the government's request. Subsequently, Stamler and Hall withdrew their civil suits. Photographs includes images of District Court proceedings, courtroom interiors, and White Supremacist movement protesters outside the courtroom. He served as a professor of political science at York University in Toronto from 1968 to 1976; edited and wrote for Communist publications, including The New Masses (1939-1942) and The Daily Worker (1942-1954); and was a member of the Communist Party from 1934 to 1954. The collection consists primarily of personal, business, and political correspondence, with the bulk of materials dating from 1954 to 1976. Included are letters from political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski, Senator J.W. Fulbright, columnist James B. Reston, historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and a 1962 letter from author Doris Lessing. Also present are papers of companies with which Starr was closely affiliated: the Weston Heights Stock Farm and the Weston Orchard Company, both in Dunn County, Wis., 1919-1927; the California Forest Protective Association, 1922-1926; and the Florence-Louisiana Company, 1920-1935; and documentation of other real estate holdings in Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, and elsewhere. Correspondence, financial and legal records, minutes, and other papers are included, much of it relating to insurance and tax matters, rentals and sales, mortgages, and similar matters. Later letters comment on his struggles to homestead and eke out a living as a rural physician; some discuss the Socialist Society of Equality, a group with which Steel immigrated to Wisconsin in 1843 to establish a socialistic community. Other letters mention local and national political affairs. There is also a folder of miscellaneous legal documents, including an agreement written in Middle English, November 9, 1660, concerning the use of land at Inveraray, Scotland. |

The papers, which are written in Norwegian and English, consist of correspondence, official documents and certificates, speeches, biographical clippings, and a brief journal. Also included is a biography of Steensland by Byron C. Ostby and a transcription of all documents by Oskar Garstein. The correspondence, which was primarily written to Steensland during the 1850s and 1860s consists of letters from his family in Norway and from friends who were also Norwegian immigrants. The career papers include printed and draft news stories and photography of news events in Poland and Smolensk, 1940-1941. There are frequent letters exchanged while the couple lived apart during the early war years. The correspondence includes only limited contacts with AP executives, although there are exchanges chiefly of a social nature with Louis Lochner, Glen Stadler, and Clifton M. Utley. Other papers document World War II internment at Bad Nauheim and military service during World War I. Irene's papers include diaries and Chicago radio station WJJD scripts about the role of women during World War II. In addition to his wartime photography in Poland and Russia, Steinkopf photographed Queen Elizabeth's visit to Nigeria in 1956, as well as the couple's life and associates in Milwaukee, Vienna, Prague, Sarajevo, London, and their European vacations. |

Hope Valley was settled by a mix of Black, White, and Native American settlers who peacefully co-existed until circa 1900 when racial tensions began to escalate. Stelter, a descendant of the Walden family, documents the histories of various extended families residing in Hope Valley in 1899, principally the Revels, Walden, Shivers, and Roberts families. Included are papers relating to the churches and schools in the Hope Valley area and genealogical materials on individual family members including notes, news clippings, school and cemetery records, and other biographical information. The tape recording is an interview with Gen Roberts (2000) during a drive through Hope Valley in which Roberts recounts the history of the area and various anecdotes regarding life in the community. |

Stevenson, a writer and editor on social justice and labor, who was blacklisted for his refusal to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951. The collection best illustrates Stevenson's career as a writer and his interests in the American Southwest, the labor struggles of the New Mexican coal miners, culture and aesthetic theories, and the House Un-American Activities Committee. There is little directly concerning the Hollywood Ten. The largest portion of the collection consists of drafts of five volumes comprising The Seed, which were Morning Noon and Night, Out of the Dust, Old Father Antic, The Hoax, and The Sowing. Other major works documented in the collection are the novels The Edge of the Nest, The Gospel According to St. Luke's, and “The Pig-Iron Venus” (unpublished). A small administrative file of letters, subscriptions, and draft articles submitted for publication reflects Stevenson's work as co-founder and editor of the California Quarterly. On tape is a memorial service for Stevenson. The photographs include family snapshots; albums of photos from a 1912 family European trip and from Stevenson's World War I service; and photos of Paris (1919), Saranac Lake, New York (1920), the Southwest (1930s-1950s), and the Zuni Indian Reservation (1933). |

Stone, a Reedsburg, Wis. attorney who was active in the Wisconsin progressive movement, particularly in Sauk County. Throughout his active political career Stone maintained an correspondence with Wisconsin congressmen, notably John J. Esch, Merlin Hull, Paul O. Husting, A. W. Kopp, and Irvine L. Lenroot; members of the La Follette family; and national political figures. Stone was an active supporter of Robert La Follette and served as assistant secretary of state during his governorship, 1901-1903. Much of the business correspondence, 1892-1907, relates to Stone's law practice. It affords a view of the small town lawyer's activities, with emphasis on debt collection and land cases. Stone was also secretary of the Reedsburg Canning Company, member of the board of directors of the Harley-Davidson Company, and an investor in the Milwaukee Lead and Zinc Mining Company. Some correspondence relating to these business interests is included in the collection. Other letters document Stone's numerous educational and other civic activities in Reedsburg and his real estate investments. |

There are also many love letters to and from his second wife. Other correspondence include letters from Max Ascoli, Carroll Binder, Alois Dersoe, Ralph Edwards, A.R. Holcombe, Wesley Maurer, Helen Rogers Reid, Dinah and Vincent Sheean, and DeWitt Wallace, as well as many other individuals of interest for their autograph value. Three boxes relate to SDS during its initial growth, 1958-1962, and contain national convention papers (including the Port Huron Statement); files on the League for Industrial Democracy and the Student League for Industrial Democracy from which SDS developed, projects, and related organizations; and correspondence of early leaders Al Haber and Tom Hayden. Thirty boxes date from the fall of 1962 to August 1965, the period when SDS still considered reform possible and when it maintained four separate national offices: the administrative national office and the offices of the Economic Research and Action Project, the Peace Research and Education Project, and the Political Education Project. National office records include voluminous correspondence of leaders such as Todd Gitlin, Paul Potter, and Clark Kissinger, reports, minutes, membership lists, pamphlets, registration forms, newsletters, clippings, and check stubs. These records relate to conventions and meetings, projects involving the anti-war movement and South Africa, publications, and intra-organization matters and relations with local chapters and other organizations. ERAP, which was headed by Rennie Davis, sought to organize a radical political movement among the poor. This section includes files on meetings, publications, and projects such as its extensive work among the poor in Chicago. PREP, which served as a clearinghouse and publisher for research on peace, disarmament, and foreign policy, is documented by correspondence, leaflets, manuscripts, newsletters, prospectuses, reports, and files on Boston PREP. One-half box of correspondence, memos, minutes, leaflets, prospectuses, and reports document PEP's efforts to push national electoral politics leftward in 1964. The third series consists of 23 boxes regarding the operations of the national office from late 1964 to 1970 when SDS became increasingly action-oriented, violent, and fractious, ultimately dividing into Progressive Labor, Weathermen, and Revolutionary Youth Movement. Included are correspondence (containing many references to Paul Booth and Bernadine Dohrn); minutes, notes, resolutions, and further correspondence of the national conventions and meetings; office files; project and subject files; reference files; and material concerning local chapters and related groups. Also part of the manuscript collection, but not available with the microfilm edition, are 24 tape recordings of SDS conferences, conventions, meetings, and speeches; the April 17, 1965, March on Washington; and the 1966 National Conference for New Politics Electoral Campaign Institute. |

SLS is a group formed in April, 1979, to move college students toward the Libertarian Party movement, with which it is associated. Included are local and national SLS administrative records, correspondence, convention records, flyers, opinion papers, literature, and clippings primarily relating to anti-draft and anti-tax activities and to a proposed anti-pornography ordinance in Madison. Also present is some material on related anti-draft organizations in Minnesota with whom the SLS collaborated and some personal papers of Beito including campaign literature from his unsuccessful 1982 congressional campaign. |

The only material dealing exclusively with the organization is a scrapbook containing a constitution, correspondence, flyers, letters, and memorabilia. The collection also contains audio reel recordings of a December 6, 1970 edition of a Milwaukee radio talk show, Milwaukee Talkie, hosted by Bob Schuster with guest Uri Davis, an Israeli pacifist and war resister. |

Over half of the collection is comprised of correspondence concerning content, advertising, exchanges, circulation, and other business and financial matters. The correspondence, which deals with content and which spans the journal's existence (1959-1967), relates to editorial policy in general and to the publication of individual articles. Included are extensive exchanges with authors such as Herbert Aptheker, Noam Chomsky, David Dellinger, W. E. B. DuBois, Philip Foner, Eugene Genovese, Thomas Hayden, Langston Hughes, Corliss Lamont, Staughton Lynd, Herbert Marcuse, C. Wright Mills, Sidney Peck, Howard Selsam, William A. Williams, C. Vann Woodward, and Maurice Zeitlin. For the period 1965-1967, there are manuscripts of articles and reviews. The remainder of the collection is comprised of fragmentary business and financial records. |

In 1929, the group became affiliated with the Wisconsin Federation of Women’s Clubs. At biweekly meetings, club members took turns presenting programs of intellectual interest or inviting guest speakers to lecture. The name of the club was changed to Study Club of La Crosse in 1950, and the group was disbanded in 1983 due to the advanced age of its members and a lack of interest. Records of the Club, 1928-1983, include study club program announcements (1928-1983 with gaps), minutes (1962-1980) and several scrapbooks (1928-1978). |
