Abstract: Mainly World War I letters written by Lee F. Pickett, second lieutenant of Company I, 102nd Infantry, giving his impressions of France and describing the Second Battle of the Marne, at which he was wounded. Letters from his army associates to his mother offer condolences upon Pickett's death at the Battle of the Argonne Forest in 1918 and describe his military career. Several citations to Pickett for bravery are also included.

Abstract: Papers of peace advocate Robert Pickus, primarily concerning two groups in which Pickus was a leader: the California-based Acts for Peace and its successor, Turn Toward Peace, a national organization. Included are personal and organizational correspondence, speeches and writings, biographical information, and organizational papers such as minutes, financial records, position papers, clippings, publicity, reports, flyers, memoranda, research material, a wide variety of publications, forms, ephemera, and photographs, including images of demonstrations, parades, and displays. The collection relates to a host of activities including education and public witness projects with churches, students and children, politicians, community peace centers (especially well documented are the Marin and Seattle Peace Centers), and conscientious objectors. Although Pickus is well known for his critique of the New Left during the anti-Vietnam War era, this aspect of his career is not well documented in the collection.

Abstract: Papers of Eleanor Jackson Piel, a New York City attorney known for handling civil rights and civil liberties cases, together with some papers of fellow attorney Philip Wittenberg that were in her custody. Selected based on legal or historical importance, the files represent a variety of types of litigation ranging from Sandra Adickes v. Kress, a precedent-setting civil rights case appealed to the Supreme Court, to numerous cases of discrimination based on gender, a Florida death penalty appeal, and numerous criminal cases of special note.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee native and U.S. Army Sergeant 1st Class who served at Base Hospital No. 22 (named Beau Desert) near Bordeaux, France during World War I. Most of the collection consists of photographs, originally stored in two scrapbooks. For preservation reasons, Piepers' scrapbook of hospital photos was disassembled; his compilation of sightseeing images from France remains in its original scrapbook. The images include unit photographs, and scenes of camp life, German prisoners, hospital wards, nurses, patients, and training in Milwaukee. The unit was manned by men and women organized by the Milwaukee County chapter of the American Red Cross. A unit history published in 1940 provides details on the origin, operations, and demobilization of the hospital.

Abstract: Case files for Pierce County Court, under the name of the decedent, in which persons interested in the estate petitioned the court to determine the heirs entitled to the property and then issue a certificate of descent or a termination of joint tennancy giving the court's decision. Files contain the petition, showing the time and place of death and the residence of the decedent, the names, addresses and relationship to the decedent of all heirs entitled to any interest in the property, and a description of all property for which a determination of descent is sought.

Abstract: Rolls show ownership and description of taxable lands, assessed valuation of each parcel, taxes due, and record of payment of taxes. Total valuation, taxes due, and taxes paid are shown for personal property. For the years 1854-1870 all tax rolls were retained; after 1870 rolls were retained for each year for the city of River Falls and generally for the decennial years for all other local units; for the years 1975-1995 only tax rolls for every fifth year have been retained.

Abstract: Papers of D. H. Pierce, an Appleton (Wis.) businessman who was nationally known for his Red Shuffler game fowl. Included in the papers are game fowl periodicals, diaries, financial records, family correspondence, photographs, and employment and investment records (1889-1966). Also included are research files compiled from the 1950s to 1993 by three separate researchers documenting D. H. Pierce and his Wisconsin Red Shufflers. An index to the periodicals and transcriptions of each diary, completed in 2002, are included in the collection.

Abstract: The papers of Theodore Pierce, a member of one of the first African-American families in Madison, Wisconsin, concerning his friend, Willard Motley, a prominent African-American writer of Chicago. The collection includes mostly incoming correspondence to Pierce from Motley, dating from 1938 to 1963. The bulk of the materials are from 1946-1950. The collection also contains a small collection of Motley's writings, including two manuscripts written by Motley--"Lucy: A One Act Play" and the first two chapters of the book, "Of Night, Perchance of Death" (published as "We Fished All Night")--and four published articles, "Calle Olvera," "Education of a Writer," "Give the Gentleman What he Wants," and "Small-Town Los Angeles."

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1925-1998, of an African-American resident of Madison,Wisconsin who served as messenger to several governors. The papers primarily document his family and relationships within the homosexual community. Included are biographical clippings; incoming personal correspondence spanning a 73 year period; outgoing correspondence, chiefly post-1985; photographs; writings; memorabilia; and additional correspondence, legal documents, and photographs documenting the family. The family papers primarily concern his uncle Samuel Pierce, who was also an executive messenger, and his grandfather John Pierce, a member of the Louisiana Legislature. Pierce's own correspondence contains details about the arts community in New York City in the early 1940s through correspondence with David Zellmer, as well as a few items from Merce Cunningham and Eric Hawkins, all members of the Martha Graham Dance Company. Other significant correspondents include Gordon Boardman, Donald Pryse Jones, and Harold Lindemann. The photographs and negatives include images of one of Madison's middle-class Black families primarily during the 1920s and candid photographs of friends, primarily 1960s through the 1980s. Among the photograph subjects are Gordon Boardman, Walter S. Goodland, the actor Canada Lee, Ruth Page, and Ted Shawn.

Included in the collection are a minute book, a few financial volumes, and financial statements. Also present is a personal ledger book of Henry M. Peck. The creamery was sold March 26, 1920, to the Pierceville Cooperative Co., which operated the business under that name.

Abstract: Papers of Robert Pierpoint, a journalist best known as a CBS White House correspondent. The papers document his professional career as a producer and broadcaster for the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation in the late 1940s; his initial affiliation with CBS as a stringer in Scandinavia (1949-1951), his years as a Korean War correspondent for the network (1951-1953) and Far East bureau chief (1953-1957), his assignment to the White House press corps (1957-1980), and his years covering the State Dept. (1980-1982). Included are manuscripts and other material relating to his book, At the White House: Assignment to Six Presidents (1981). The collection is supplemented by miscellaneous photographs, films, and sound recordings from various stages in his career. Of special note are slides of prisoner exchanges following the Korean War.

Abstract: Correspondence, sacramental records, minutes, reports, clippings, and photographs of the Pilgrim Congregational Church which formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 1901 and dissolved in 1970. The records document church history through the minutes of congregation meetings and trustees' meetings, and the records of the Deacons and Deaconesses Board, Women's Guild, the Pilgrim Missionary Society, the Men's Club, the Sunday School, and the Friendship Bible class.

Abstract: Collection contains letters written by James Pillar, a member of Company B, 21st Regiment Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War, to his parents covering the dates September 1862 to September 1863. The letters provide information about the everyday life of a soldier, such as standing guard, marching, and being transported to new locations. Three letters written to the Pillar family by Pillar's chaplain and officers explain how James was fatally wounded in the battle at Chickamauga 20 September 1863. The Milwaukee Public Library staff transcribed the letters written by James, and the collection contains the transcriptions and the original letters.

Abstract: Records of Pine View Health Care Center, a Marinette County mental health institution located near the city of Peshtigo. Built in 1906, the institution was first known as the Marinette County Asylum for the Chronic Insane. In 1941 the county home and the asylum merged and was renamed the Marinette County Hospital. In 1974 the psychiatric patients were relocated and the institution became the Pine View Health Care Center. The bulk of this series consists of Insane Asylum and County Hospital records (1906-1973, plus a listing of Poor House residents (1915-1941), and a list of admissions and discharges from the Pine View Health Care Center (1974-1993). The records document patient management such as admission and discharge and for patients admitted before 1942 also provides information on individuals such as physical condition and care, treatment received, personal history and family history. Also included in this series are Pine View Auxiliary Press Books (1965-[1984]) containing programs, newspaper clippings, and photographs of resident, staff, and community activities.

Abstract: Records, 1953-2007, of the Piscatorial and Inside Straight Society, a fraternal, male-only organization made up largely of politicians, journalists, and businessmen, documenting the group's biannual gatherings in the spring and fall to hunt, fish, play cards, drink, and play music. Members included Governor Walter J. Kohler, future Governor Warren Knowles, and Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird. The trips are documented extensively in photographs.
