Included are correspondence, legislative bill files, subject files, and microfilmed biographical clippings. The subject files contain a wide range of documentation on Jackamonis' involvement with most of the prominent issues of the period such as state and federal budgets, economic development of Wisconsin, taxation, and public employee labor issues, and on his political opposition to Governor Lee S. Dreyfus. There are also numerous files on his role on many standing and special committees concerned with regulation of cable television (on tape are two public hearings held on this issue), legislative oversight of executive agencies, lobbying, occupational licensing, and many other issues. There is also extensive information on the improvements in internal Assembly operations for which Jackamonis was responsible and on his administration of the committee structure. Also included in the subject files are genre categories of his press releases and newsletters. Correspondence includes indexed general exchanges with constituents and others and policy-level letters to and from executive agency administrators. The legislative bill files contain correspondence and material distributed by lobbyists and others to influence voting on specific legislation. Extensive biographical clipping scrapbooks are available on microfilm.

Tax rolls typically include a legal description of the property, name of the owner, assessed valuation, tax levied, and a record of payments. For the period 1900-1975 only every fifth year has been preserved. Tax rolls for 1856-1940 are in volume format; tax rolls for 1960-1974 are available on microfilm only.

Jackson, Hartley H. T. (Hartley Harrad Thompson), 1881-	Title: Hartley H. T. Jackson Papers, 1898-1958 Quantity: 0.2 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Mss 662 Abstract: Papers of Jackson, a zoologist employed by the U.S. Biological Survey (1910-1940) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1940-1951), consisting of correspondence and research reports. Jackson authored a monumental survey of Wisconsin mammals in 1961 and much of the correspondence, 1922-1958, focuses upon that publication and others. The reports consist of field observations of Wisconsin mammals made by Jackson, 1912-1955, scattered reports by other researchers, and 1940 field observations made by Jackson and Olaus Murie in the western United States. Correspondents include wildlife biologists Aldo Leopold, F. J. W. Schmidt, George Wagner, A. W. Schorger, Francis Zirrer, and Walter E. Scott. Also present are letters, 1928-1932, to Dr. E. W. Nelson, including two from Theodore Roosevelt.

Jackson, a Centralia, Wisconsin, businessman. Included is family correspondence, 1834-1865; deeds and documents relating to the Massachusetts estate of Abraham Jackson, Henry Jackson's father; and ledgers, 1809-1844, kept by Stedman Jackson while operating small stores in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Included in the correspondence are letters describing life in Wisconsin, the California gold rush, Civil War battles, and the New York draft riots.
Jackson, Leo M.	Title: Leo M. Jackson Papers, Quantity: 0.3 linear ft. (1 archives box and 3 oversized folders) of papers, 0.1 linear ft. (1 folder and 1 oversized folder) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 8 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Col. Leo M. Jackson, a Regular Army and Wisconsin National Guard officer, who served with the 32nd Infantry, 119th Machine Gun Battalion in World War I. The collection includes personnel records, background information on the 119th Machine Gun Battalion, orders and memoranda from the American Expeditionary Force, including extensive field orders from October 1918 military operations, intelligence reports, and battalion rosters. After the war Jackson also served as an officer in the 128th Infantry of the Wisconsin National Guard, which is documented by training materials and inspection reports.
Jackson, Merrick T., 1902-1998	Title: Merrick T. Jackson Papers, 1900-1985, 1993 Quantity: 4.6 c.f. (10 archives boxes and 2 card boxes) Call Number: Mss 813 Abstract: Papers of Merrick T. Jackson, a public relations specialist who was active in the field of corporate communications for employers such as the Western Electric Company and the Hoover Company and who, as an employee of Hill & Knowlton, edited Steelways magazine for the American Iron and Steel Institute for twenty years. Included are correspondence, clippings, samples of original public relations materials, fiction and non-fiction writings, diary-like engagement calendars covering his retirement, and a lengthy autobiographical memoir. The narrative includes reflections on his career and individuals he knew such as Kenneth F. Cook of Standard Oil and Robert Newcomb with whom he was associated in the establishment of the National Council of Industrial Editors. About his association with Hill & Knowlton there is correspondence, progress reports, public relations audits, recollections of H&K staff, and samples of publications he produced (Steelways is available in the University of Wisconsin Engineering Library.) There are also notes, correspondence, and reports for the public relations audit he conducted for Caltex concerning its investments in Southeast Asia; information on proposals prepared for his own firm, Direct Lines, Inc.; and a run of Hoover Worldwide, which he edited. About his personal life there are reflections about his mother, a single parent, and his first wife who died from cancer; correspondence and writings concerning Lafayette College; and correspondence and a diary concerning his year of teaching (1923-1924) at the American University in Cairo.

Jacob, Max, 1876-1934	Title: Max Jacob papers, 1923-1963 Quantity: .25 cubic feet 1 half letter-sized box Collection includes: papers, postcards, negatives, an autograph folder CallNumber: MS 593 Abstract: The Max Jacob papers are a collection of 138 letters written by Jacob and sent primarily to his friend, Marcel Jouhandeau, but also to Marcel's wife and mother. Jacob was a prominent Paris-based poet, author, and painter who was born in 1876 and died in a Nazi internment camp in 1944. He is most known for "Le Cornet a des", a poetry collection. The letters are mostly short, and were all sent by Max Jacob. They were written between 1923 and 1940, with the bulk of them being written before 1930.

Included is correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, and writings, with information on other family members, Kansas editor William Allen White, Judith's dramatic work and painting, Mabel's operatic training, and the educational and other activities of each woman.

The demonstration demanded the resignation of a Milwaukee public official for his prejudicial statements concerning blacks.
Jaffe, Sam A., 1929-	Title: Sam A. Jaffe Papers, 1947-1972 Quantity: 0.4 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: U.S. Mss 178AF Abstract: Papers of a journalist and news broadcaster for ABC and CBS who specialized in coverage of events in Russia and the Far East. Included are general correspondence, fan mail, writings of several types, and biographical material. Most complete in the correspondence are exchanges with several Chinese diplomats concerning Jaffe's attempts as a roving reporter for The Nation to visit the People's Republic of China during the 1950's. Most complete in the writings section are a group of fifty dispatches written as a Marine correspondent covering combat in Korea. Also of interest are a number of television scripts for various ABC year-end news summaries, a transcript of an interview with Prince Sihanouk broadcast on ABC Scope in 1966, and a script for Soviet Woman, an ABC special which featured Jaffe's 1963 interview with Nina Petrovna Khrushcheva. Although most of the articles are represented by clippings, there is a dispatch copy of his 1955 interview with Chou En-lai, the first post-revolution interview granted to a western journalist.
Jalowitz, Stacy	Title: Stacy Jalowitz: My Experience in the Gulf War, 1990-1992 Quantity: 0.2 c.f. (1 archives box), 2 tape recordings, and 20 photographs Call Number: Eau Claire Mss CI; PH Eau Claire Mss CI; Tape 1428A Abstract: Stacy Jalowitz, a UWEC freshman, recounts her experiences as a woman who participated in the Persian Gulf War, where she served in the 13th Evacuation Hospital with the Army National Guard during the Desert Storm operation in 1991. Included is her sixteen-page memoir in which she describes her experiences while stationed in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and in the desert, twenty miles south of the Iraq border. An oral interview on two audiocassette tapes, twenty photographs, and correspondence are also included.
James family	Title: James Family Papers, 1863-1976 Quantity: 0.8 c.f. (2 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 439 Abstract: Papers of members of several generations of the James family of Richland Center, Wisconsin, especially the daughters of Oscar Briggs and Eloise Fort James: Beulah James (Mrs. Daniels) Young, and Adeline James (Mrs. Fred G.) Cook. Incoming correspondence of Beulah and Daniels Young, 1927-1975, is mostly from Daniels' brother and sister-in-law, Charlie L. and Leota Young, stationed in Egypt in the late 1940s; and from Adeline James Cook as she was dying of cancer in the early 1960s. The largest group of papers are the semi-biographical short stories, both published and manuscript, of Eloise Fort James, dated from 1935 to 1942. Social announcements, notes on genealogy, and newspaper clippings, circa 1900-1976, document the births, deaths, and marriages of family members. A few clippings concern the history of the family hardware store in Richland Center. Family memorabilia are also included, as is a genealogy of the Luke Heard (Hurd) family.

(13 archives boxes) Call Number: Whitewater Mss AW Abstract: Records of the James Manufacturing Co., a manufacturer of livestock handling equipment, incubators, ventilating systems, and other products to improve productivity and sanitary conditions in agriculture. The collection consists primarily of printed newsletters, catalogs, and fliers documenting the firm's advertising and promotional efforts. Included are photographs, drawings and blueprints, and details on an advertising campaign on Jamesway equipment used by Admiral Richard Byrd in Antarctica in 1934.

Materials include correspondence between members of the faculty, administration, present and former student population, and on campus organizations, personal testimonies from administration, faculty, and students regarding the issues of racism on campus, meeting minutes for the Minority Affairs committee, the Special Committee to Investigate Allegations of Racial Discrimination at UW-L of 1982-1983, and the Institute for Minority Studies, and reports from the Special Committee to Investigate Allegations of Racial Discrimination at UW-L of 1982-1983, the Dean of Student Affairs, the University Minority Program Discussion Group, and the Office of Education Civil Rights Division Investigation. James, Ada Lois, 1876-1952 [Digitized content]	Title: Ada Lois James Papers, 1816-1952 Quantity: 6.9 cubic feet (30 archives boxes and 1 oversize folder) and 6 reels of microfilm (35 mm) Call Number: Wis Mss OP; Micro 848 Abstract: Papers of Ada James, a social reformer, humanitarian, and pacifist residing in Richland Center, Wisconsin. Family correspondence, 1816-1904, contains material on her parents, David G. James and Laura Briggs James; these papers reflect her father's interest in employment for women, woman suffrage, spiritualism, birth control, and socialism. Among the volumes are also diaries, 1865, 1882-1904, and proceedings of the meetings of the Wisconsin Woman's Suffrage Association, 1885-1903, kept by her mother. Ada James' correspondence dates 1890-1952 and documents her suffrage activity in the Political Equality League, the Wisconsin Woman's Suffrage Association, and the National Woman's Party; and her work on behalf of pacifism, prohibition, and progressivism. After 1925 her correspondence deals principally with social work, particularly the founding and development of the Children's Board of Richland County.

James, an advertising and public relations executive instrumental in the establishment of advertising policy for radio and television. The collection includes correspondence, speeches and writings, and a variety of advertising material, the bulk of which relates to James' employment by the National Broadcasting Company (1927-1941) as sales and promotion manager; the Mutual Broadcasting System (1946-1949) as vice-president in charge of advertising, promotion, and research; and the A.C. Nielsen Company as vice-president in charge of new services (1954-1971). Very little documentation relates to his work for the Corning Glass Works, the Grand Central Aircraft Company, or KVOA-TV, Tucson, Arizona.

The men belonged to the firefighters, teamsters, and the auto, rubber, electrical, and textile workers unions and worked at the Parker Pen Company, Rock River Woolen Mills, Fisher Auto Body Plant, General Motors plant, Samson Tractor Company, and Fairbanks, Morse and Company in Beloit. Their interviews discuss the formation of the Janesville labor movement, union organizing there, their union experiences, their ethnic, religious, political, and family backgrounds, and the roles of women and Blacks in the workplace and the unions. Other topics are also explored in some of the interviews. The Gerald Litney, Eugene Osmond, and John Scott interviews contain details on working for railroads. Scott also talks about his experiences as a youthful hobo during the Depression. The Hugo Preuss interview discusses Germans as an ethnic group in Janesville. And Glenn Swinbank describes his youth in New Diggings, Wisconsin.

Jansky, Cyril M. (Cyril Methodius), 1870-1969	Title: Cyril M. Jansky Papers, 1888-1957 Quantity: 2.0 c.f. (5 archives boxes) Call Number: Wis Mss VA Abstract: Papers of Cyril M. Jansky, a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin. Correspondence, articles, speeches, lectures, and essays reflect Jansky's interest in public affairs and public utilities as well as his work in radio telegraphy. Correspondence with Gisbert Bossard concerns development of automatic signals for railroad crossings. Essays on the history of electricity were intended for publication as a book. Included also are manuscripts written by his sons, Karl, Nelson, and C. Moreau; materials on public utilities by J. A. Whitlow of the Oklahoma Public Service Company; and a volume of Jansky's personal accounts.

Pertaining to his early career are blueprints and a thesis on his vacuum tube research, recorded interviews, and correspondence on reception of the signal of WHA, “the oldest station in the nation;” teaching notes from the University of Minnesota and correspondence concerning the development of radio by several Minnesota companies; minutes, reports, and correspondence (some with Herbert Hoover and Frank Kellogg) concerning radio conferences and the Radio Act of 1927; a transcript of testimony in support of his unsuccessful appointment to the Federal Radio Commission, and a diary of radio work in Great Britain during World War II. Records of Jansky & Bailey, consulting engineers, consist of incomplete administrative records and client reports by Jansky and others concerning station coverage and the marine uses of radio. Particularly extensive are reports and films concerning work for Lake Carriers Association. Also included is an extensive file of speeches and articles, financial and legal papers, information on various organizations and societies to which Jansky belonged, and miscellaneous family correspondence.
Jastrow, Joseph, 1863-1944	Title: Joseph Jastrow Papers, 1883-1942 Quantity: 0.4 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Mss 276 Abstract: Papers of Joseph Jastrow, an experimental and developmental psychologist who is best known for his radio broadcasts and newspaper columns on pyschology for the lay person. After becoming the first professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin, Jastrow went on to join the New School for Social Research in New York and talk about psychology on NBC Radio. Papers include correspondence, primarily with his sister-in-law, Henrietta Szold; lectures; articles that include a psychological portrait of Adolf Hitler; and radio addresses from 1935-1936.
