| Haberman, George, 1894-1979 | Title: George Haberman Family Photographs Physical Description: 0.2 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 068 Abstract: George Haberman (1894-1979) was a photographer in La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1923-1963. Haberman was a photographic apprentice under William Pryor about 1913-1915, and served as an aerial photographer instructor at the Eastman Kodak campus during World War I, returning to La Crosse after the War. The collection includes positive copy prints from glass slide negative photographic images of the family of George Haberman and some La Crosse area scenes. There are several self portraits of Haberman, his parents Frank and Mary (Stier) Haberman, and other family members which are all unidentified. La Crosse scenes include a horse trotting or race track, building at 524 Main St. (Pryor's Photographic Studio), backside of the Woolworth's Building, the inside of a restaurant, Pettibone Park bridge and lagoon, and a farm house scene. The original glass slides were transferred to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Murphy Library - Special Collections Department. |

Correspondence regarding local and regional chapter activities is that of chapter presidents Cecile Schein and Fannie Mack. (St. Croix County). The collection consists mainly of Hagan's genealogical research into her mother's and father's families (Donohue and Hagan, respectively) and collected family papers. Both families have roots in Ireland. Included are brief family histories and group sheets; both family correspondence and Hagan's research correspondence; clippings; photographs; copies of pages from family Bibles recording births, deaths, and marriages; and collected miscellaneous items relating to various family members. Other family names represented in the papers include Barger, Carroll, McGoldrick, McConville, Mahoney, Scott, and Martin. In addition, there is a scrapbook compiled by S. N. Hawkins containing clippings about an 1899 cyclone that devastated New Richmond, and obituaries of prominent New Richmond citizens. |

Included are notes, publications, photographs, and correspondence with Cuban religious leaders such as Sergio Arce-Martinez of the Seminario Evangelico de Teologia about trips to Cuba from 1969 to 1993. Additional papers are organized around her involvement in organizations such as the Committee of Returned Volunteers and the Cuba Resource Center (1969-1985), of which she was a founder and initial staffer, and suits to which she was a plaintiff which concerned restrictions on travel to Cuba and access to Cuban publications. |

The correspondents are ancestors of the donor, Harold Hagen, and include Anders (Andrew) Pedersen Solem (Hagen's maternal grandfather); Elling Anderson Sende (Hagen's paternal great- grandfather); and Anders Lian (aka Andrew Lee), Hagen's maternal grandmother's cousin. Elling Anderson Sende arrived in Eau Claire in 1879 and assisted the others to immigrate. They all worked primarily in sawmills during the summer and in lumber camps during winter. |

The Haigh and Hartnell families emigrated from England in the mid-1800s and settled near Salem, Wisconsin. The 97 postcards in the album depict life, recreation, and travel destinations in Wisconsin, notably Kenosha, Green Bay, Cumberland, Salem, and Lake Geneva. |

(6 archives boxes) Call Number: Whitewater Mss U Abstract: Incoming correspondence, legal documents, and other business papers of Haight, a Wisconsin land speculator based in Koshkonong who was active in local and state politics. Haight acted as agent for various Wisconsin residents and numerous persons from out of state, including John Davis of Massachusetts, Martin O. Walker of Chicago, and Eastern businessmen Caleb and William Cushing. Included are a lengthy exchange with O. W. Thornton of Marshall and correspondence with Moses M. Strong discussing land transactions and state and local politics. Other correspondents are John Catlin, James D. Doty, and Alexander Mitchell. A detailed land account book, 1839-1845, traces many of Haight's transactions. Letters written after Haight's death concern the personal and business affairs of his descendants. There is some genealogical material pertaining to the Thomas family of Connecticut. Papers before 1836 and after 1853 are primarily family correspondence. |

Haight, a Waukesha, Wisconsin, newspaperman and attorney, including family correspondence (1849-1908), and short entry diaries (1866, 1877-1881, 1883-1885, 1892-1899, 1901, 1908-1913), a few speeches, and a history of Wisconsin written by Theron's son Frank. Correspondence (1849-1861) of Theron's brother Morris concerns his settlement near Summit, Wis. Theron's Civil War letters (1861-1863) concern his service in the 24th New York Infantry in Virginia, including the battles of Ft. Royal, Gainesville, and Second Bull Run, where he was taken prisoner. Theron's courtship correspondence with Annie Youmans, whom he married in 1870, is also included. After the Civil War, Haight served briefly as school principal at Mukwonago, Wis., on the editorial staff of the Milwaukee Sentinel (1866-1868), and as publisher and editor of the Waukesha County Freeman (1870-1876). From 1876 to 1878, he was Secretary of the Wisconsin Board of Charities. |

Call Number: WVM Mss 1324 Abstract: Papers and still images pertaining to Garrie W. Hainer, a West Allis, Wisconsin resident who served in the Milwaukee Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II and also served with Headquarters Battery of the 65th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion stationed on Okinawa during the Korean War. Hainer was fifteen when he served with the Civil Air Patrol. During his service he collected clippings taken from newspaper and magazine articles pertaining to new equipment and vehicles used during the war. The articles include photographs and brief statistics about various airplanes, tanks, vehicles, ships, and munitions used by both Allied and Axis powers during the war. In one instance he made a scrapbook from the articles and entitled it 'Information on Planes and Shells.' Hainer also collected articles about U.S. troops in the field and some memorial articles commemorating different battles a year after the end of the war. Hainer later enlisted with the Army and was stationed in Okinawa for eighteen months during the Korean War. The manuscripts include service records, military papers, and ephemeral items such as baggage tags, military identification cards, and two Christmas greetings; one from Hong Kong and one from Ryukyus Command that has an interesting drawing of Santa Clause on a military transport ship. Also included in the collection are manuscripts documenting Hainer's attempt to obtain the Korean War Service Medal for which he was denied due to the fact he did not serve on the Korean peninsula. The still images include loose photographs, a photographic scrapbook, and slides taken while Hainer was stationed on Okinawa. Images in the scrapbook and on the slides include those of Hainer and other soldiers relaxing around the base, close-ups of the anti-aircraft sites and radar stations, a USO show, and a targeting range for small arms fire. Also included are images of local towns, people, and island landscape. Some interesting images are those showing the death and destruction still visible from World War II. Loose photographs further document the scenery and local residents of Okinawa, and also show anti-aircraft artillery in action. |

Hale, well known La Crosse lawyer and civic leader, was born on March 24, 1893, in Spring Valley, Minnesota. In 1918 he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a law degree. Hale died February 28, 1987. These papers consist entirely of military notes and essays written by Hale while he was in training in the Army Air Service in Austin, Texas, in 1918. They contain nothing about Hale’s personal life. |

The papers consist primarily of family correspondence, including commentary on travel, recreation, college life at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, politics, domestic concerns, financial struggles, family events, and events local to Watertown and Madison. Also includes: Daniel Hall's papers documenting his professional role as a lawyer and State Assemblyman during the 1870s; the papers dating from before circa 1851 document the activities of family members in Lockport, New York, and include a small series of family photographs. |

(2 archives boxes) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 841 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Eunice Onsrud Hall, a member of the 6669th Women's Army Corps (W.A.C.) Headquarters Platoon who served in North Africa and Italy during World War II. The collection consists largely of the letters Hall wrote home to her family during her wartime service and also while she worked in Greece for the Corps of Engineers from 1947-1948. The war letters described her basic training in the United States and, to the extent allowed by censors, her overseas service as part of the 5th Army. She described military life, living conditions, and recreational activities during the war. Other war-related materials include her military papers and local newspaper clippings describing her service. Her correspondence from Greece also described living conditions and recreational activities in addition to her thoughts on the Greek people. Postcards document the trips she took to nearby countries during her time in Europe. Materials from her life as a veteran include two typed reminiscences, materials relating to her late husband Reynold Hall, also a World War II veteran, and her interest in the Women in Military Service Memorial near Washington, DC. Photographs include numerous unidentified shots of Hall and fellow W.A.C.'s in North Africa and Italy during World War II. There are many photographs of recreational activities in Greece from her stay there. Also included are photographs from her trip along with other 5th Army veterans to Italy in 2001 to visit American cemeteries there and old battlegrounds. |

The collection consists of correspondence and research files for his book Out Now: A Participant's Account of the American Movement Against the Vietnam War (1978) and records of various anti-war organizations, most notably the Fifth Avenue Vietnam Peace Parade Committee, New Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, National Peace Action Coalition (NPAC), National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE), and the Student Mobilization Committee (SMC). Also included are subject files containing publicity material, press releases, correspondence, agendas and proposals for individual conferences, demonstrations, and GI civil liberties. Walter Hamady (1940-2019), an American bookdesigner, papermaker, and artist, ran his own private press, the Perishable Press Limited, and papermill, Shadwell, and printed over 100 works, often in collaboration with other artists and authors. The collection focuses largely on the Perishable Press Limited's work, "Flora: poems" by Ann McGarrell with original drawings from Jack Beal, including correspondence, vendor receipts, distribution information, and several proof copies. Additional broadsides, pamphlets, promotional materials, and other ephemera of the Perishable Press Limited are included, as well as correspondence between Hamady and a variety of friends, colleagues, and customers of the Perishable Press Limited. |

The bulk of the collection is made up of detailed memos on daily activities and information requests submitted by Hamilton as chief of the night bureau of the War Department Public Relations Bureau from May 1941 to January 1942. This period is further documented by a letter describing the White House press room on December 7, 1941. Writings consist of photocopied articles for Business Week, 1943-1946, and cabled stories sent to the London Daily Mail as that paper's Tokyo correspondent in 1924. Particularly noteworthy among this material is Hamilton's eyewitness coverage of an atomic bomb test in a May 1946 article and his scoop of the Japanese withdrawal from the League of Nations. A few fragmentary records reflect Hammond's involvement in several other railroads including the Northern Pacific; Chillicothe and Brunswick; and the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic which he formed in 1888. Half the papers concern the administration of John H. Hammond's estate. These consist primarily of letters, contracts, and rent statements, 1890-1893, received by his son Ogden and H. Knox Taylor, who managed the estate's extensive property holdings and controlled other development and construction projects in West Superior. The collection also contains a small amount of personal material including a short autobiography, an account book (1864-1874), obituaries, and a group portrait depicting Hammond as a general on W.T. Call Number: WVM Mss 1233 Abstract: Papers and photographs documenting the World War II service of J. Clyde Haney (Joseph), a Janesville, Wisconsin resident who served with the 193rd and 194th Glider Infantry Regiments of the 17th Airborne Division, and was killed in action during Operation Varsity on March 24th, 1945. Haney saw action at the Battle of the Bulge, was posthumously awarded two purple hearts and the bronze star, and is buried at Margraten Holland/Netherlands American National Cemetery. All of the manuscripts are photocopies of original documents and include letters, certificates, newspaper articles, and biographical material. The bulk of the manuscripts are letters that were written by Haney to his wife, son, mother, and in-laws during basic training and serving on the European Front. In the letters, he describes his daily military activities, social events, sites in Europe, and his overall welfare. The letters to his wife, Vera, also include a sense of homesickness. He describes in several letters how he missed being with her and their son, Richard. Haney also shows concern for the welfare of his family, often asking how everyone was feeling and making sure that they are eating enough food. After entering combat, his letters also mention the horrors of war without going into detail. In one letter (January 8, 1945), he says, "Sherman was certainly right," and in another (January 18, 1945) he says, "I've seen and been through a lot, but want to forget it as soon as I can." The letters to his in-laws and mother discuss much of the same elements as the letters to Vera, but often they include more details about what he was training for and how dangerous missions would be when he entered combat. One letter (March 7, 1944) to his mother describes his role as a combat intelligence and reconnaissance soldier, but tells her not to discuss the dangerous aspects of this role with Vera because he didn't want her to worry. Haney devised a code system with his family and would occasionally include coded messages within his letters. These codes generally relay his location in Europe and missions he was about to partake. His son, Richard, explains the code system his father developed in more detail in his book "When is Daddy coming home?" There is also a collection of letters written to Haney from Vera that were returned after he was killed in combat. In them, Vera describes how she and Richard are doing, events and happenings in Wisconsin, and life once the war is over and the family is back together. They also include descriptions of her concern for Haney's safety and how it was affecting her. In one letter (February 28, 1945) she states that she was relieved to hear that he was not seriously wounded after she had received a telegram stating that he was and that the stress had been causing her to have headaches. The collection also includes letters written to Vera from the War Department and commanding officers expressing sympathy for her loss, and documents discussing the determent of his remains. Vera eventually decided to keep his remains interned in Europe. The newspaper clippings are of Richard in a preschool class, the announcement of Haney's death, an account of Vera's first trip to visit his grave in Europe, and Richard's account of his father's service in three separate articles. The biographical information includes a list and brief family biography and guide to the codes that were hidden within them. He also included copies of two articles about the history of the 17th Airborne Division and the 194th Glider Infantry Regiment as it made its assault during Operation Varsity, and certificates for his purple hearts and bronze star. The photographs are reproductions of the originals and include images of Haney with his family before being drafted, during his training, before leaving for Europe, and in uniform right before his death. There are also images of Vera and Richard at his gravesite during three different visits to Europe. |

(13 archives boxes) Call Number: Whitewater Mss AY Abstract: Correspondence and administrative papers of Hartman, superintendent of a Wisconsin tuberculosis sanatorium, documenting her career and involvement in tuberculosis and professional associations. In the early 1920s Iva Hartman was one of the first nurses trained at the Trudeau Sanatorium at Saranac Lake, New York, which was then pioneering in the care of tubercular patients. In 1929 she came to Janesville, Wisconsin as the first superintendent of the Pinehurst Sanatorium. She remained at Pinehurst until her retirement in 1959. Most of the collection deals with national, state, and local tuberculosis associations and the administration of Pinehurst Sanatorium. Among the materials relating to the Sanatorium are correspondence, annual reports, superintendent's reports, patient and staff schedules, and patient records as well as copies of newspaper clippings about Pinehurst and many photos of the Sanitorium and its staff. The tuberculosis and professional association records include some routine correspondence, but are mainly reports and publicity materials. |

There are letters from Eastern and Chicago land speculators, regarding land purchases and lots in Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Milwaukee, and along the Catfish and Rock rivers; from the New York-Wisconsin Land Company for which Hathaway became agent; letters to Hathaway and Solomon Juneau concerning the Milwaukee harbor survey; and routine correspondence with other land agents and agencies. There are a few letters from Lucius I. Barber describing the 1842 legislative session, from Albert G. Ellis, surveyor general at Dubuque, and Alexander J. Irwin, Green Bay postmaster; copies of surveying instructions; land records; and some family correspondence. Papers from the years of Haugen's congressional service consist of correspondence with constituents, principally in regard to patronage and pension claims, but also touch upon other matters, including Scandinavian politics and newspapers, local affairs in Pierce County and Superior, and state campaigns, including his own for the gubernatorial nomination in 1894 and that of Robert M. La Follette in 1896. Papers from the years of Haugen's work as tax commissioner touch upon the income tax law of 1911, and include correspondence from 1919-1920 with officials of the National Tax Association, of which Haugen was then president. Papers also include material on Montana state politics from 1921 to 1923, when Haugen served as advisor to the board of equalization of Montana on revision of the state tax laws. |

Information in the letters reveals how Hawkins' work as a professor and additional volunteer activities influenced the university. Hawkins' home diaries record both her daily personal and professional activities including the classes she taught. Her travel diaries document her trips both abroad and in the United States and detail her personal travel experiences, description of the various locales, and contemporary news of the countries in which she is visiting. She later used these travel diaries as background material while writing her travel journals which she compiled to formally express how she experienced these foreign lands. |

Hayden, a Vietnam veteran from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who was drafted in February 1967 and served with a U.S. Army mechanized reconnaissance unit (25th Infantry Division, 4th Battalion) based in Cư Chi and Tây Ninh from August 1967 to August 1968. Hayden, a dyslexic, began writing about his combat experiences as part of his work with a literacy tutor in 1993. The collection includes manuscript drafts of stories, typescripts (prepared by Susan Anderson, his literacy tutor), a memoir, and a published volume titled “A Soldier's Story: Tracks, Tunnels and the Tet Offensive” (1999); original letters written by Hayden to his mother and sister Nancy from the beginning of his Army training to the end of his tour in Vietnam, some of which mention events which later figure in his stories; service records and awards; a published article; and captioned copies of photographs taken in the field and at Cư Chi. His stories are notable for their soldier's-eye view of matters such as clearing tunnels, knocking down woods, providing security for convoys, personal safety, and life in the field and in base camp. Some photographs and transparencies relate to the stories. Images include camp housing and facilities, mined roads, equipment, living in the field, a camp memorial service, and fellow soldiers. |

She was an actress-in-residence at the College of St. Theresa, Winona, Minnesota from 1967-1977, and lived in La Crosse, Wisconsin from 1977 until the time of her death in 1994. The collection, mostly photocopies, consists mainly of clippings about Haydon and her husband, George Jean Nathan. It also contains correspondence, playbills, photographs and a deconstructed scrapbook. The La Crosse Public Library Archives does not hold the originals for this collection. |
