Abstract: Papers of Donald E. Francke, a distinguished American pharmacist and editor of several publications. As chief pharmacist for several large university hospital pharmacies and editor and publisher of several pharmacy journals, Francke was concerned with drug nomenclature, professional ethics, and drug information. From 1944 to 1963, Francke worked to improve pharmacy school curricula and the image and education of hospital pharmacists. Francke was also active in numerous professional organizations, and advocated establishing international ties among pharmacists. The collection includes correspondence, conference materials from European meetings and study missions, extensive materials on FIP conferences, 1953-1977, including copies of papers given at the Press and Documentation section meetings, speeches, research files, and writings.

Abstract: Papers of Edith Sinaiko Frank, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, mainly relating to her adult life, marriage to David S. Frank, and volunteer involvement with many charitable, civic, and cultural organizations in Madison, Chicago, Toledo, and Charleston, West Virginia, as well as her deep interest in art and music. Included are biographical clippings (portions available only on microfilm), photographs, travel diaries, writings and class papers, correspondence with friends and associates such as Minsa Craig, Clarence Eidam, Dame Myra Hess, Aurora Natola-Ginastera and Alberto Ginastera, and Wolfgang Stresemann. Newsletters, membership materials, clippings, publicity, and correspondence document the organizations with which she was associated such as the Toledo United Nations Association, the Madison Art Center, the Wisconsin Jewish Archives, and various chapters of the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. Also included are fragmentary papers of her husband, a president of Pure Oil Company; her mother, Sarah Goldberg Sinaiko of Madison, also an active civic volunteer; and other Sinaiko Family relatives. The Sarah Sinaiko files concern the Neighborhood House and include some correspondence with Marie C. Kohler.

Abstract: Papers of John L. Franson, a Wisconsin conservationist and National Audubon Society representative. Included are the working files he generated while serving the Fond du Lac County Conservation Alliance; the Wisconsin Resource Conservation Council; the Badger Sportsmen, a conservation newspaper published in Wisconsin; and as the National Audubon Society Central Midwest representative headquartered in Owensboro, Kentucky. These files contain correspondence, publications, reports, and newsletters concerning specific conservation issues of concern to Franson. Also included in the collection are a few personal letters, appointment calendars, and “chronicles” of two of his business trips.

Abstract: Papers of La Crosse, Wisconsin, biology professor and genealogist Oren Frazee and his wife, Alice Devol Frazee, a genealogist and amateur poet. Included are writings, correspondence, and other records relating to Oren Frazee's career; genealogies of the Frazee, Devol, Montgomery, Badgely, and Arnold families of Indiana and Illinois; records relating to a farm and other family property in Indiana; and papers concerning Alice Frazee's activities with the Campus Dames of La Crosse, 1930-1949. Also in the collection are correspondence, professional papers, and poetry, 1872-1920, of Alice's father, James M. Devol, a railroad inspector.

Abstract: Incomplete papers, mainly 1910-1940, of James A. Frear, a Hudson, Wisconsin lawyer and Progressive Republican who held numerous elective offices in state and federal government: assemblyman, 1902-1904; state senator, 1904-1906; secretary of state, 1907-1913; and congressman, 1913-1935. Much of the congressional correspondence is of a routine, congratulatory nature, with letters of autograph value from Presidents Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt; Theodore Barton; Guytzon Borglum; Harry Daughtery; John N. Garner; and Gifford Pinchot. Of greater interest are files on an unofficial 1923 congressional tour of Russia meant to re-establish trade relations; Frear's criticism of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, particularly regarding New York Indians; responses from Eleanor Roosevelt, Jeannette Rankin, and others regarding his peace referendum proposal; and correspondence with Cordell Hull, Harold Ickes, Robert M. La Follette, Jr., and others to secure an appointment to the Tariff Commission in 1934. There are also letters of note from John Collier and Edward Keating. Personal correspondence concerns land investments in eastern Montana and the distribution of Frear's autobiography which was published by a vanity press. Best documenting his national political career are weekly letters distributed to district newspapers and campaign literature. These letters also describe his international travel. Frear's early political career is covered only by clippings, 1903-1904, which treat his years in the Assembly. Frear's autobiography, Forty Years of Progressive Public Service, is in the Historical Society's Library.

SWFRN was supported by the Sustainable Agriculture Program of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) from 1988-1992. Also included is a small amount of material relating to another grazing organization, Ocooch Graziers, and other grazing resources from Kickapoo Organic Resources Network (KORN).

Materials document Freedman's work on numerous productions and as a composer for the Acting Company (New York City), New York Shakespeare Festival, the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre (Stratford, Connecticut), the San Francisco Opera, and numerous other companies. The productions include Bells Are Ringing, America’s Sweetheart, Peer Gynt, West Side Story, The Robber Bridegroom, many Shakespeare plays including Love’s Labor’s Lost, and many other productions. Abstract: Records of a Mississippi communications clearinghouse where all forms of useful information were gathered, organized, and transmitted to the poor, rural, black population. Included are materials written and printed by FIS, and items created by allied Mississippi civil rights groups, all of which were distributed by the Service. In the collection are freedom primers; political handbooks concerning county and municipal government; leaflets and flyers on a variety of political, economic, and agricultural subjects; news releases; and a small file of correspondence and printed form letters. There are also copies of the proposal for organizing FIS, and a prospectus for later expansion; with small files regarding the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee. From the 1970s are records created and collected by Jan Hillegas and Ken Lawrence, some of which were produced under the aegis of FIS. These later documents concern women's rights and feminism, the Republic of New Afrika, farm workers and labor, and racism in the military. On microfilm are papers and clippings which pre-date the organization of FIS, but which were deposited for use by FIS by the Council of Federated Organizations. These materials include WATS Reports; clippings, statements, and news releases concerning the disappearance and murder of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman in 1964; and similar documentation of incidents of brutality and harassment. On tape is “A Visit to Sunflower County, Mississippi,” a recording made by FIS head of news and tape programs, Phil Lapsansky.

Abstract: Photographs of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin fraternal organization. Includes portraits of the eleven men credited as being the "Builders of Kenwood Temple," and six photographs of the initial construction of the Kenwood Temple. The cornerstone of the Temple was laid on June 19, 1915. There is also one group photograph of the members who attended an organizational meeting at Thomson's Drug Store on March 25, 1913.

Abstract: Over 200 letters written by a German non-commissioned officer, Rolf Freese, during World War II. The letters were written mostly to his parents and family members from the Russian Front between the years 1938 to 1943. Also included are letters to Rolf from various people, including his parents and family members. Lastly, there are wartime field post briefs that give brief accounts or updates on various soldiers that may have been sent to Rolf's parents.

Abstract: The Freier Maenner-Verein in Bostwick Valley / Freidenker-Verien [Freethinkers Society of Bostwick Valley], La Crosse Co., Wisconsin (Barre Mills, Wis.) existed from 1869 to 1917. This group was a Freethinker or free thought congregation whose members were generally born in Hanover, Germany. Records include a membership log book, 1862-1905; a financial journal 1889-1917; a copy of translated and transcribed minutes, 1869-1917; and copies of newspaper articles related to the group or its members; and finally personal correspondence to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sander and their daughter Hulda, 1881-1949. Some materials are written in the German language.

Abstract: This collection includes approximately 1000 handwritten letters to and from Linda M. French, dated 1890 to 1921. Her writing, both from Berlin and New York City, provide insight to city life in the early 20th century. She frequently describes and critiques lectures, recordings, books, and especially musical and theatrical performances of the time. From 1912 on, French shows an interest in the fight for suffrage and communicates her involvement in and opinions on the movement. Many of the responses are from friends and family members, notably her uncle, Calvin Stebbins; aunt, Susan Burleigh; and a variety of members of the Beebe family who resided in Hampden, Massachusetts. These letters provide details of family news and share instances of everyday life.

Abstract: Records of the Friedens United Church of Christ, organized in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1869 as the Friedens Evangelical Church, a congregation of German Americans. The collection consists mainly of financial records which also include information about membership and clues about church activities. There is also a volume of baptism, confirmation, marriage, death, communion, and special offering records for the years 1914-1928. A scrapbook in the collection includes a 60th anniversary brochure with brief historical notes, and also includes clippings, orders of worship, and other memorabilia. Photographs in the collection include an image of what is presumably the first church built in 1869, an unidentified group of men in front of it, and the stained glass windows and bells of the church. The earliest records are in German.

Abstract: The Alvin Friedman correspondence contains seven letters sent to Phi Sigma Delta member Alvin Friedman in 1949 endorsing the Fraternity's decision to offer membership to Weather Sykes, the first black student to join an all white fraternity at the University of Wisconsin. Friedman wrote to a number of prominent Americans seeking statements of support for Sykes's admission to the fraternity, hoping, according to his nephew Barry Temkin, that the support of well known people would advance his cause with the fraternity's national headquarters. The letters include statements of support from First Lady Elanor Roosevelt, American Civil Liberties Union director Roger Baldwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Marshal Field.

Abstract: Records of Friends of McGilvray Road, a private non-profit organization. In conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, the group is responsible for repairing, preserving and maintaining McGilvray Road (also known as the Seven Bridges Road) and its historic bridges, located in the Van Loon Wildlife Area, which is also known as McGilvray Bottoms. The records contain formal agreements between the Friends and other organizations, articles of incorporation, bylaws, a membership list, meeting agenda and minutes, financial reports, background information, newsletters, magazine and newspaper articles, correspondence, grant files, and publicity and fundraising materials. In addition, the records contain three manuscripts written by Ray Kyro and corresponding research notes. Information related to the McGilvray Road print series is also included.

Abstract: Records of an organization initially called La Crosse Public Library Friends that began in April 1964. Encouraged by the library director and a board member, the group's initial goal was to help promote a referendum to build a new library facility in the City of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The group permanently reorganized as Friends of the La Crosse Public Library in June 1967. Designed to supplement funding beyond the parameters of the library budget, the Friends perform fund-raising activities in order to enhance service, equipment and materials of the La Crosse Public Library. Materials created before 1976 are severely lacking, but include by-laws, check stubs, an early membership lists, some meeting minutes (1967-1969), and promotional materials from the steering committee of 1964. Records since 1976 include by-laws, board minutes, financial records, newsletters and some membership lists. There is also legislative material 1969-1971 trying to promote the concept of a statewide public library system in Wisconsin.

Abstract: Records of a non-profit corporation which was created in September 1950 to assist the State Historical Society in conserving, advancing, and disseminating knowledge in the field of Wisconsin history. Originally incorporated as the Women's Auxiliary of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, the name was changed to Friends of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1983 which in turn changed to Friends of the Wisconsin Historical Society in 2001. The records include minutes, original and revised articles of incorporation and by-laws, treasurers' reports, minutes of committee meetings, and a list of its presidents located at the beginning of Volume 3.

Abstract: Forty Civil War era carte-de-visites collected by Leander Frisby, a West Bend, Wisconsin resident, who was politically active in Wisconsin. The carte-de-visites are all of famous generals, officers, and political figures, including generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant, President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist John Brown. Also included in the collection are carte-de-visites of officers from the 28th and 12th Wisconsin Infantry Regiments. The carte-de-visites were originally placed in an album, which was later dismantled. The carte-de-visites are now in alphabetical order. Copies of the original covers of the album, containing more information about Leander Frisby and the donation of the materials, and a list of the original order of the images in the album are included in the manuscripts. A container list of the images is also included with the manuscript materials.

Abstract: Materials relating to Dr. John G. Frisch's leadership of the campaign for fluoridation of public water supplies. The collection comprises correspondence, 1931-1952, including many letters from Dr. Frederick S. McKay of Colorado Springs, Colorado, another leader in the field of fluoridation; articles and speeches by Frisch; statistical summaries of fluoridation experiments in Wisconsin and other states; a pre-fluoridation survey made in Madison, Wis. in 1947, and a post-fluoridation survey made in 1951; a recorded speech given by Frisch at Manitowoc in 1952; a microfilmed scrapbook, 1944-1952, of clippings on water fluoridation in several Wisconsin cities; and lecture notes taken by Frisch at the Marquette University dental school, 1921-1922. The photographs are of mechanical equipment used in the fluoridation of drinking water in various communities in Wisconsin in 1951.

Abstract: Papers, loose photographs, photographic scrapbook, and a slide pertaining to Albert W. Fritz, a Berlin, Wisconsin resident who served with Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during the Second Battle of the Marne (France, 1918). The papers are primarily an assortment of manuscripts covering his service and acceptance of the Distinguished Service Cross. Included are biographical materials, newspaper articles pertaining to Fritz's service and the war in general, a book charting his payments, and a poem about the service of the 1st Division during the war. Correspondence include a very interesting letter written by Fritz to his friend and fellow soldier, Albert Herbert, that discusses the wounds he received at the Battle of the Marne, names friends who were killed during the battle, and briefly describes his actions against German forces. Herbert was a friend from Berlin, Wisconsin who was killed in action before the letter was delivered. Other correspondence include a letter he wrote to his mother after returning to the United States and the telegram his parents received notifying them that Fritz had been severely wounded. There are also training notes Fritz wrote about uniform insignias and unit organization, oversized certificates, a military order giving him permission to wear a chevron indicating he had been wounded, and postwar papers pertaining to his request for an engraved Purple Heart and a new ribbon. The scrapbook contains images of Fritz and fellow soldiers taken during basic training and while stationed in France. There are also images taken at the family farm showing Fritz posing with his sister, Ellen, and his future wife, Lenora Kroll. The scrapbook also includes postcards depicting the U.S.S. George Washington transporting President Wilson to Europe after the war, along with additional images of U.S. Navy vessels. Loose photographs include a portrait of Fritz in uniform while wearing his Distinguished Service Cross medal, several images of him wearing his uniform and medal at the family farm, and a photograph of Fritz during basic training. Of interest are a series of images of Fritz taken in Germany that show him wearing the Distinguished Service Cross, with one image showing him cradling his rifle. Additional images include souvenir photographs and postcards collected by Fritz while he was in Europe, and an oversized lithographic print of a portrait of Fritz in uniform.

The papers document his time in Washington, D.C. (1969-1973) and his views on contemporary issues including the Vietnam War, the Nixon administration, and amnesty for draft evaders, a position which he supported in Congressional testimony in 1974.

The collection documents the development of the Fromm Brothers' fox, mink, and ginseng industry; the history of the company's role in the international fur market; Fromm Laboratories' contributions to veterinary medicine and its contributions to the success of the fur industry; the Fromms' position as leaders in the industry; their importance to the local economy; and finally, the decline of the business. The Fromms operated under several business names and partnerships: Fromm Brothers, Inc.; Fromm-Green Research, Inc. (later Fromm Laboratories, Inc.); Fromm Brothers Silvercross Fox Farm, Inc.; Federal Silver Fox Farms, Inc.; and Fromm Brothers, Nieman and Company.
