(8 archives boxes, 1 card box, and 1 record center carton), 3 reels of microfilm (35mm), 38 photographs, and 199 transparencies Call Number: Mss 874; PH Mss 874; Micro 2053 Abstract: Papers, 1898-1958, of Emerson Ela, a Madison, Wisconsin attorney and advocate of marketing cooperatives who was also associated with many civic organizations, and the personal papers of his wife, Florence White Ela. Included are biographical and autobiographical materials, personal and business correspondence, diaries and journals (chiefly of Florence Ela), household accounts, records of his early law practice, and subject files about the Madison Dry League, the Madison Planning Trust, the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, and other organizations. Most extensive are the files on Ela's chairmanship of the United War Work Campaign during World War I which include correspondence; a scrapbook documenting the work of Lee C. H. Orbach, state publicity director; additional clipping scrapbooks; and lantern slides issued by the national campaign to support its fundraising work. Records of the law practice include correspondence with clients such as Richard Lloyd Jones, Amos P. Wilder, and the Wisconsin State Journal, and speeches delivered in behalf of the Northern Wisconsin Cooperative Tobacco Pool. Other correspondents include Charles N. Gregory, Irvine Lenroot, and Verne Kaub. Photographs include images of Emerson Ela and Florence White Ela documenting their lives before and after their marriage. Included are images of Emerson in school at Rochester Academy, Beloit Academy, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Images of Florence include photographs from Beloit College and a scrapbook kept by Florence.
Ela, Richard E. (Richard Emerson), 1812-1888	Title: Richard E. Ela Papers, 1830-1884 Quantity: 2.5 c.f. (5 archives boxes and 1 flat box, including 28 volumes) Call Number: Mss 834 Abstract: Correspondence and business records of manufacturer Richard Emerson Ela of Rochester, Wisconsin. Early letters to his family describe his efforts to establish himself in the West and discuss land speculation, financial operations, and agricultural prospects. Later business correspondence is mainly incoming mail from his agents who sold the Ela fanning mills, wagons, carriages, plows, and other agricultural implements from town to town or from their own hardware stores, and from wholesale manufacturers and a few individual customers. Further details of his business are found in journals, ledgers, cash books, agents' sales books, inventories, lists of customers, and miscellaneous volumes from the firms of Richard E. Ela & Co. and Thompson & Ela. In addition, the collection includes letters written to Ela by two young friends, William W. S. Bliss and Henry L. Kendrick, between 1830 and 1837 which describe student life at the U.S. military academy at West Point.

The collection documents both Elkins' career and personal life, and to a lesser extent, the career and personal life of actress Claire Bloom, Elkins' wife from 1969 to 1976. Included are a general subject file of correspondence, agreements, clippings, and financial records relating to Elkins' work as an actors' representative and producer; personal papers of Elkins and Bloom; and fragmentary corporate records of Elkins' many production companies. Among the productions with the greatest documentation are the films Alice's Restaurant, A Doll's House, and Oh! Calcutta!; and stage plays Best Laid Plans, A Doll's House, Golden Boy, Oh! Calcutta!, The Rothschilds, the South African plays Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island, A Streetcar Named Desire, and This Winter's Hobby. Materials are arranged in alphabetical order and include by-laws, rules of order, social and community welfare committee correspondence and meeting minutes related to the Elks.

(CENEX). Oral history includes information on changes in farming over the previous six decades, farmers' difficulties during the 1930s depression, on community affairs and his experiences on the Dunn County Board of Supervisors, and on the growth of and directions taken by CENEX. Also includes photocopies of related papers, 1962-1976, including clippings, a statement by Ellefson, and two brief histories of CENEX; and photographs of the Louis Ellefson farm in Dallas, Barron County, Wisconsin, 1900-1920, including exterior views of the farm fields, buildings, horses, a tractor and thresher, and individuals.

Included are personal and business papers which provide information on the economic, political, and social milieus in which they lived. Business records are incomplete, documenting well only the Michigan Avenue Syndicate, a Chicago real estate holding company. The collection reflects the Ellingers' work together prior to their 1916 marriage; Flora Ellinger's “rich aunt” relationship with her family; occasional involvement by Albert with Wisconsin's Progressive Republicans; and Flora's patented inventions. Family photographs, business photographs, and drawings are also included. Prominent correspondents include George Brandies, Arthur Brisbane, Henry Allen Cooper, Oscar Fritz, Henry Hart, William Holabird, Francis McGovern, Charles Netcher Jr., Townsend Netcher, Mollie Netcher Neuberger, and John C. Ruettinger. The corporation papers concern A. Elliott, John, 1900-1994	Title: John Elliott (1900-1994) Papers, 1912-1974 1912-1974 Physical Description: 1.0 c.f.(2 archives boxes) Call Number: LAX Mss 2005/06-11 Abstract: The papers of John Elliott primarily concern the operation and eventual sale of the Hotel Stoddard, a regionally known upscale hotel. Included are legal documents regarding the lease and sale of the Hotel Stoddard, blank hotel registration cards and stationery, an early hotel ledger, and certificates of shares for the Northern Hotel Company. Also included are corporate seals for the Calvin W. Baker Company and Elliott Enterprises, a metal hotel sign, and a drawing of the Hotel Stoddard crest.
Ellis and Merrill	Title: Ellis and Merrill Records1861-1911 Quantity: 14.0 c.f. (27 archives boxes and 8 flat boxes) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 79 Abstract: Correspondence and other records of a law firm established in Green Bay in 1890 by Eleazer Holmes Ellis and Carlton Merrill. The firm accepted all types of cases, but dealt primarily in corporate and property law. The records include files of correspondence with clients, 1890-1905; less complete information about the financial operation of the firm, 1879-1903; records of cases handled in circuit court, 1873-1894; and some records of real estate sales and the collection of rents by the attorneys, 1861-1895.
Ellison Family	Title: Ellison Family Papers and Still Images, Quantity: 1.5 linear ft. (3 archives boxes and 4 oversized folders) of papers and, 1.8 linear ft. (1 photo box, 1 slide box, 3 flat boxes and 2 negative boxes) of still images and, 1 sound disc (32 minutes) and, 2 visual discs (109 minutes). Call Number: WVM Mss 1947 Abstract: Manuscripts, still images, audio and visual recordings pertaining to the service of Robert Ellison, who photographed the Vietnam War, and his father, Albert Ellison, who served during World War II. Robert Jackson Ellison was a freelance photographer who was killed in a plane crash while covering the war in Vietnam. Materials pertaining to Robert include letters to his family and friends, as well as letters he received from family and friends. Robert kept letters he received and underlined important things he wanted to answer or address, then stapled these to copies of the letters he sent to his family and friends. Most of his letters focus on his work in Vietnam and his opinions of the war and the country. Also included is Robert's diary, in which he recorded his daily activities and opinions of Vietnam. The large part of Robert's materials are photographs, photonegatives, slides and publications. Of interest are images from Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, featuring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his companions. Robert took many photographs of the Civil Rights movement all over the United States, including a Neo-Nazi, White-Power rally in Illinois. Other important events Robert photographed include a 1964 anti-war rally in Washington, D.C. with World War I and II veterans protesting the Vietnam War. Other photographs and negatives include images from his time in Vietnam, mostly pertaining to specific stories he worked on. A few color photographs capture his last weeks at Khe Sanh. Color slides include his time at school, including wildlife and car racing, the Korean Crisis during the Vietnam war and Jackie Kennedy's visit to Cambodia. Publications include Newsweek, Time, Ebony and True Magazines, all of which contracted with Robert and purchased his photographs for publication. Albert Jackson Ellison, an Ames, Iowa, resident served in the 511th Airborne as a paratrooper during World War II. Materials pertaining to Albert Ellison are mostly letters written to his family and his wife, Miriam. Letters to Miriam cover his boat journey to New Guinea in 1944, training he received in New Guinea and his life in the Philippines. A telegram from December 1944 was sent to Miriam to inform her that Albert had been wounded. Other materials pertaining to Albert's service include a photograph and several negatives of Albert, most likely while he was stationed in the South Pacific. In July 1945, Albert was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.

Elsner, Richard, 1859-1938	Title: Richard Elsner Papers, 1854-1967 Quantity: 0.2 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 193 Abstract: Photocopies from a scrapbook and memoir of Richard Elsner, an early champion of both the trade union and Socialist movements in Milwaukee. Born in Germany, Elsner came to Milwaukee in 1880 and became a pioneer in the Brewery Worker's Union, a veteran of the Socialist Party, an attorney, and was elected as a civil judge, register of deeds, and a member of the Wisconsin legislature. The papers include photocopies of family materials, writings by Elsner, miscellaneous articles, and photographs of Elsner and his family. Also included is an undated biography of Elsner written by Charlotte Bleistein.
