Abstract: Papers of Charles Dadant, a Frenchman who immigrated to Hamilton, Illinois, in 1863 and established the bee supply firm Charles Dadant & Son in 1874. Dadant, in hundreds of articles in European and American bee journals, advocated the large movable-frame hive. It is by his name that this kind of hive, preferred by European beekeepers, is known on the continent. He also solved the problem of the safe transatlantic shipment of Italian golden bees. The papers consist of correspondence between Dadant and Edouard Bertrand, editor of Revue Internationale d'Apiculture; letters by Dadant's son Camille Pierre to Bertrand; letters to Charles Dadant & Son from many European and American bee men, among them L. L. Langstroth; and some letters to Frank C. Pellett, H. J. O. Walker, and H. F. Wilson. The collection provides information on beekeeping experiments, controversies, practices, and developments in the United States and Europe, and comments on political philosophy and world events.

Abstract: Campaign correspondence of Andrew H. Dahl, a Progressive candidate in Wisconsin's 1914 gubernatorial primary. Although routine in nature, the correspondence reflects the split in Progressive support which resulted in five Progressive candidates in the primary being defeated by the Stalwart Republican candidate.

Abstract: The collection consists of a series of love letters written by Harry Dahmer, a private in Company A, 10th Infantry Replacement Company, to Sylvia Steffen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The letters give brief accounts of basic training, the climate in Texas, and reminiscences of Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Dahmer also provides short descriptions of leisure activities in camp at Le Mons, France, such as baseball and music, and of visiting Paris and St. Malo, France.

Abstract: Papers of William F. Dalrymple, a native of Pennsylvania, dealing with his investments in mills, railroads, farmlands, and city real estate in Pennsylvania, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The collection consists primarily of incoming letters, but includes occasional drafts and copies of Dalrymple's replies, brief diaries, and records of the Bayfield Transfer Railway Company, the Milwaukee and Dubuque Railroad, and the Milwaukee, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad. Many letters concern investment in wheat “bonanza farms” near Fargo, North Dakota.

Abstract: Papers of an award-winning broadcaster, news executive, and quiz show personality. Arranged by year into subject files, the collection is best for the years 1956-1967 and includes a wide variety of materials pertaining to his association with ABC as newsman and vice-president of news, special events, and public affairs, 1953-1967. Fragmentary, early material includes a scrapbook on events covered by Daly as White House correspondent for WJSV, Washington, D.C., 1938-1939; correspondence; and scripts for CBS Is There (later known as You Are There), The Front Page (CBS), his coverage of the Italian theater during World War II, and The Sangamon, an Edgar Lee Masters radio play. There are no scripts dating from the later period covered, but there are office memos, fan mail, and publicity for What's My Line? (CBS), John Daly and the News (ABC), and Voice of Firestone (NBC). Extensive files pertain to ABC news administration and operations, outside speaking engagements, involvement with professional groups such as the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters, and coverage of political conventions. The films and discs in the collection are spots made for the Water Pollution Advisory Board, narrated by Daly.

Abstract: Records of the Dane County Arts Council, an organization in existence from 1975 to 1980 that was responsible for coordinating and promoting the development of the arts in the Dane County, Wisconsin area. The collection consists of constitutions and by-laws, planning documents, and other organizational materials; minutes, correspondence, and reports of the board of directors and the staff; press releases, newsletters, and other publications; program files; financial records; and information collected on other state and local arts organizations. The program files variously include proposals for grant funding, correspondence, and financial reports, but few narrative evaluations of the council's innovative projects are included. Best represented are projects aimed at senior citizens and one program which employed artists with CETA funds.

Abstract: Records, 1972-2014, of the Dane County Farmers' Market (DCFM), a producer-only farmers' market held in Madison, Wisconsin, that began operating on September 30, 1972. The bulk of the collection consists of applications from market vendors and membership applications, as well as market rules, brochures, member newsletters, letters to market vendors, season stall contracts, and inspection records. Also included are studies and surveys (1980-2010) related to marketing research, the wide range of produce on offer, and the economic impact of the farmers' market.

Abstract: Records of the Dane County Hospital and Home, a Dane County institution established in Verona, Wisconsin in 1854 which has been responsible at various times during its history for the care of the indigent elderly and the mentally ill and for the treatment of alcoholics. Included are annual reports to the State Board of Control, minutes of the board of trustees and the separate governing bodies under which the institution operated during its early history, minutes of the building committee responsible for constructions at the institution, patient and inmate registers containing biographical data and information on the causes of the patients' insanity and/or indigence, a narrative journal of E.P. Titus, overseer of the Poor Farm (1877-1882), restraint records (1883-1887 and 1932-1941), and records of financial expenditures for the period 1875 to 1964. Printed annual reports to the Dane County Board of Supervisors are available in the government documents section of the SHSW Library.

Abstract: Mainly radio scripts, 1941-1944, for broadcasts sponsored by a labor group organized in Dane County, Wisconsin during World War II and reactivated during the Korean War to coordinate union aid to government war programs. War profits, overtime duty, the draft, workers' education, and labor's attitude toward the national war effort are among the topics treated in the radio scripts. Ten items, 1950-1952, relate to the organization's activity during the Korean conflict. The collection also includes a folder of Wisconsin State Employees' Association correspondence, 1938-1941, and a sample copy of a constitution for local chapters.

Abstract: Records of the Dane County Social Planning Agency, a federation of Wisconsin public and private social agencies, and of its predecessor, the Community Welfare Council; including correspondence, annual meeting minutes, membership lists, financial records, project and personnel reports, and reference files on other social service agencies. The agency was a central planning body for community services and was originally established by the United Community Chest. The collection highlights the operations of several programs including the Institute for Simulation Analysis, the Madison Youth Council, and the Voluntary Action Center.

Abstract: Files containing information compiled by the coroner about deaths occurring in Dane County. This series does not include unsolved homicides, and files from 1920 and later do not include any homicides. Each case is summarized in a coroner report which provides both pertinent information about the deceased and findings as to cause and date of death. Files on traffic deaths typically include traffic reports filed by the police. Files on deaths involving negligence, abuse, or foul-play typically include autopsy reports and inquest transcripts. Files on suicides include copies of suicide notes where applicable. In addition, news clippings and police photographs are present in some files.

Abstract: Negatives and photographs documenting the policies, practices, and procedures of the Dane County Sheriff's Department as well as a sampling of the types of crime, crime victims, and criminal investigations handled by the department. Images show such departmental activities as awards ceremonies, teaching seminars, banquets, community outreach, departmental resources, and departmental administration. The types of crimes and investigations documented include murders, arson, conduct regardless of life, and unexplained or accidental deaths. Also included are images of autopsies and the exhumation of bodies during investigations as well as mug shots of arrested individuals.

Abstract: Annual reports submitted by the Dane County Superintendent of Schools to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (1863-1891) and annual reports submitted by school district clerks and teachers to the County Superintendent (1912-1965). Included are Annual Reports of School Districts and School Census forms. Narrative annual reports prepared by the Superintendent for West Dane County only are present for 1937 and 1939-1963. The 1863-1891 reports contain the information categories general statistics, kinds of textbooks used, schoolhouse data, and financial statements. The 1912-1965 reports provide information on student enrollment and attendance, names of persons less than twenty years of age residing in the school district, names of teachers, details about particular schools, and school financial statements.

Also shown are total tax, by whom paid and date, delinquent taxes returned to the county treasurer, collector's fees, and remarks.

Abstract: Records, 1861-1911, of a lumber company headquartered at Eau Claire, Wisconsin, which owned thousands of acres of timber in Wisconsin's Chippewa River Valley and operated its own farms, flour mills, tow boats, and general stores in the area. The records consist of letterpress books, seventeen of which contain company correspondence and two of which contain General Manager Eugene Shaw's personal correspondence. Also included are miscellaneous loose records consisting of timber “scale” books (winters 1866-1867); field books delineating timber stands on sections of land (1899, undated); and miscellaneous correspondence, business receipts, and legal documents (1861-1911). The microfilmed portion of this collection includes a daybook recording sales in a company store (1881), and the record of the Eau Claire dynamo and the production of city electric lights (1893-1894).

Included are background information and a selection of the reports on media advertising effectiveness for which the firm is known. Background material consists of a brief history; several promotional items; an interrupted run of a monthly newsletter, Tested Copy, which provides highlights of Starch's research, 1938-1960; and his pamphlet, Measuring Product Sales Made by Advertising (1961). Reports divide into print and broadcast media; while the broadcasting reports focus on general audience characteristics, the magazine and newspaper sections examine reactions to specific publications such as Life and TV Guide.

Abstract: Papers of Olive Bell Daniels (1891-1984), wife, mother, artist, and genealogist, together with smaller quantities of personal papers of her husband Farrington Daniels, a prominent University of Wisconsin chemistry professor, and records of their relatives. Included are correspondence; writings and notes on family history, the role of women, and other topics; printed material relating to peace and foreign and domestic missions of the Presbyterian and Congregational churches; diaries; reminiscences; biographical material on Olive and Farrington; photographs; family financial records; extensive genealogical research material; a recording of Olive Bell Daniels' memorial service; and miscellany. Correspondence, comprising the largest and most significant portion of the collection, primarily document the routine family life of the Farrington Daniels family. Also included are papers of the families of John Horton Daniels I, a Chicago banker; Franc B. Daniels, a Minneapolis businessman; and John Horton Daniels II, a medical missionary in China.

Abstract: Papers of Edward Daniels, a participant in political and social reform movements who was also the first state geologist of Wisconsin and colonel of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. The pre-war correspondence contains information on his lectures on geology and on his work for the Wisconsin Geological Survey, 1853-1861. A few letters touch upon his military career, 1861-1862, and some concern his partnership with Joseph Medill and Horace White in a speculative venture into coal mining in Illinois. After the war, Daniels moved to Virginia and the post-war correspondence is largely concerned with Virginia politics, a newspaper enterprise in Richmond, Daniels' attempt to establish a cooperative industrial school on his estate, and a cooperative land colonization project in Mexico in which he was interested. Sixteen diaries, containing brief entries for the period 1862-1894, accompany the correspondence. The collection also includes field notes taken for the Wisconsin Geological Survey and drafts of lectures advocating cooperatives.

Daniels served in the Army Medical Corps in the Pacific from 1944 to 1947 and later worked as a civilian employee of the Army conducting laboratory and field investigations on the effects of heat and cold on personnel, the effects of clothing on the skin, and research on atomic bomb test sites. He later held positions as professor of dermatology at the University of Oregon, the University of Illinois, and at Cornell University/The New York Hospital. The collection documents Daniels' personal and professional activities mainly through correspondence dating from 1927; personal diaries, 1934-1942; and research notes (on microfilm). An avid photographer from boyhood, the collection includes many still and motion picture images taken by Daniels, from the 1930s to the 1990s, documenting family events; the Philippines (during the 1940s); Madison, Wisconsin (especially the Nakoma neighborhood); the University of Wisconsin Arboretum; Door County, Wisconsin; and New York City.

Abstract: Papers of Harry Dankoler, a Wisconsin author and newspaper publisher. Correspondence, reports, agreements, financial accounts, stockholders' information, and photographs relating to copper mining and the Leighton-Wyoming Mining Company, 1906-1911, in which Dankoler invested, comprise the bulk of the collection. There is also material, 1935-1939, concerning construction of the Door County museum at Sturgeon Bay which Dankoler helped found. Other correspondence pertains to Dankoler's work, particularly the writing he did for the Manufacturer's Appraisal Company of Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Members are required to document an unbroken lineage from an ancestor who settled in the Colonies between 1607 and 1687 as well as an intermediate ancestor who, by military or civil service, aided in the establishment of American independence between 1775 and 1784. The Wisconsin chapter organized in 1910. Abstract: The La Crosse, Wisconsin, chapter of the Daughters of Norway, Ornen Lodge #25 (organized in 1908) was part of a national fraternal organization dedicated to the socialization, mutual assistance, and preservation of the Norwegian language and heritage in the United States. The group was most active from 1908-1951, when women nationally were allowed to join the Sons of Norway lodges, but some members of Ornen Lodge continued to meet until 1969. Locally, women joined the Sons of Norway, Wergeland Lodge #28. Records include a constitution, ritual books, meeting minutes and financial materials. Much of the records are written in the Norwegian language.

Abstract: Papers of David Davidson, a novelist and writer for motion pictures and television. Davidson's career as a dramatist began during the era of live television drama, and the collection includes correspondence, notes, and scripts for anthologies such as Alcoa Hour (NBC), Armstrong Circle Theatre (CBS and NBC), Elgin Hour (ABC), Ford Theatre (NBC), Kraft Television Theatre (NBC), Motorola TV Hour (ABC), Playhouse 90 (CBS), Studio One (CBS), and United States Steel Hour (CBS), and for such later series as The Defenders (ABC), FDR (ABC), and Saints and Sinners (NBC). Of particular interest are the materials on The Ship That Wouldn't Die: The USS Franklin, an NBC special for which Davidson won a Screen Writers Guild award in 1970, and his resumes of the writing and production of each teleplay. Correspondence, research material, notes, and scripts pertain to a number of documentary films; of special interest here are five films written for the U.S.I.A. on such topics as the Warren Commission and the Vietnam War. Also included are typescripts of three novels based on his post-war experiences with the Office of Inter-American Affairs in Germany, Great Britain, and Latin America, and scripts and research materials on We Have Landed on the Moon, a recorded history of the U.S. space program.

Abstract: Correspondence of the Reverend John N. Davidson, his parents, and his half-sister Orpha E. Leavitt with relatives, classmates, parishioners, and other associates. The early family letters touch on aspects of pioneer life in northern Illinois, southwestern Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. The collection also contains letters pertaining to an expedition to the California gold fields in 1850, the Civil War service of John Davidson's uncles, Orpha Leavitt's teaching at Downer College and elsewhere, Davidson's newspaper apprenticeship at Viroqua, Wisconsin; his college education, and his Wisconsin pastorates. Among the papers is correspondence pertaining to Davidson's history of early missionary activity published in 1895 under the title In Unnamed Wisconsin, the notes and records he collected later for a projected history of Congregational and other Protestant churches in Wisconsin, and papers of two organizations with which David was associated: the Prohibition State Central Committee for Wisconsin and the Fond du Lac Ministers Association.

Abstract: Diaries, correspondence, family papers, and photographs of Hazel Lee Davies, a graduate nurse from Hortonville, Wisconsin, who from 1918 to 1947 worked as a clerk and statistician-economist for the U.S. Coal Commission of the Bureau of Mines. Included are girlhood letters and a 1906 senior class-meeting notebook from Jennings Seminary in Aurora, Illinois, and the Chicago Training School, both girls' boarding schools; letters and reminiscent articles about nursing and nurses' training, circa 1908-1918, at St. Luke's Hospital, Racine, Wisconsin; and files on homes in Florida and Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Among the correspondence are letters from Davies' niece, Lt. Col. Frances M. McClurkin, an Air Force nurse, 1955-1975, who was stationed in Japan and the Philippines; and letters from German and English women after World War II. On microfilm is a scrapbook which includes material on the National Recovery Administration, the United Mine Workers and John L. Lewis, employment discrimination against married women, and World War II. Family papers include a notebook of John R. Davies, Hazel Davies' husband's grandfather, concerning his invention of a pressed paper railroad car wheel, and genealogical information on the Robert E. Abstract: Congressional papers of Glenn R. Davis, Wisconsin representative from the Second District, 1947-1956, and from the Ninth District, 1965-1974. Copies of legislative bills and constituent correspondence, 1965-1974, reflect Davis' work on the House of Representatives committees on Appropriations, Public Works, Defense, and Military Construction, as well as on the Joint Committee on Budget Control. There is extensive correspondence between Davis and his constituents concerning the Watergate affair, 1973-1974. The Public Relations File contains media News Releases, 1967-1974, and Newsletters to constituents, 1950-1951, 1965-1974, issued by Davis' office. Political correspondence consists of copies of letters of such notable figures as Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and fellow congressmen, mainly on congressional matters. There is a biographical sketch assembled by Davis' staff, and a microfilm copy of scrapbooks, 1946-1974, which document Davis' career. The collection lacks administrative and campaign records.

Abstract: Papers collected by Davis, reflecting his interests and activities with civil rights in Mississippi, student radicalism, the Students for a Democratic Society, and community organization. Davis, a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy at the University of Michigan in 1968, was a member of VOICE, the Michigan SDS chapter, and also interested in local problems, such as those represented by the Ann Arbor Tenants' Union and rent strike. In 1965 he canvassed for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in Jackson, Mississippi, and in the summer of 1966 he was active with the Cleveland Community Project (he was working for SDS at the time). The papers include flyers and leaflets, papers presented at conferences, other writings by Davis, a few letters, and University of Michigan student government brochures.

Abstract: Letters of Moses M. Davis, a Wisconsin physician who was a member of the Assembly in 1856 and state senator from 1857 to 1860. Nearly half the collection consists of letters from Davis to Congressman John Fox Potter on the subjects of Wisconsin politics, the conduct of the Civil War, and problems of the Republican Party. Before 1856 Davis received letters regarding the slavery issue from prominent national figures such as Charles Sumner, John P. Hale, Joshua Giddings, and others. The correspondence, which is almost entirely of a political nature, also includes letters from state and other national Republican leaders, among them Salmon P. Chase, James R. Doolittle, Charles Durkee, William H. Seward, Carl Schurz, C. C. Washburn, and David Wilmot. Davis was appointed resident trustee of the property donated by Congress for the improvement of the Fox-Wisconsin Rivers in 1862. Numerous letters touch upon this development project.

Abstract: Papers of Ronald Guy Davis, a radical writer, actor, and director, who founded the San Francisco Mime Troupe, one of the first American “guerrilla theatre” groups. Davis, who was particularly interested in the study and performance of mime, also helped found the Artists' Liberation Front, Radical Booking Agency, and R.G. Davis Mime Troupe, all in San Francisco. The collection documents Davis's artistic activities and ideas, 1958-1970, and the history and daily workings of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, as well as provides an impression of the nature and scope of the avant-garde, radical, and anti-establishment atmosphere of San Francisco and the nation during the 1960's. Included are biographical materials and memorabilia regarding Davis; a writings file containing Davis's non-dramatic material and a draft of his book, The San Francisco Mime Troupe (1975); and an organizations file, with papers relating to various performing groups with which Davis was connected. Materials regarding the San Francisco Mime Troupe are most complete, and include records and photographs of many of its productions.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Leonard C. Davy, an officer with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) during World War II. The bulk of the collection consists of the more than 250 photographs that Davy took during the World War II era. Over 110 of those photos document his overseas service with the predominantly Japanese-American 442nd RCT, including many identified photos of individuals within the unit, candid shots of the group in action, and many scenery shots of French and Italian locales. Other photos depict Davy's work with the Civilian Conservation Corps and his service with the Coastal Artillery in Panama. The papers include many certificates, including a signed certificate of appreciation from President George H. W. Bush, that document Davy's military service, from the Coastal Artillery through the 442nd RCT to his extensive service in the Army Reserves. Among the ephemera that Davy collected is a membership card for the 442nd Veterans Club and a New Year's card from a fellow member of the unit. Postwar newspaper clippings about the 442nd RCT show Davy's continued interest in his old unit.

Abstract: Papers of Day, a Milwaukee real estate loan operator and president of the Plankinton Bank, consisting of letters received, 84 letter books, and 171 business record books relating to his business operations from the time he opened an insurance office in Milwaukee in 1867, through the years of the growth of the loan department which was eventually added to the insurance office, down to the voluntary assignment of Day for the benefit of his creditors in June, 1893. (See the Milwaukee Sentinel, June 4, 1893 for details.) The earliest letter books concern the insurance business, but the bulk of the collection relates to the operation of the loan business, especially mortgage loans on farm lands in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. There is a vast quantity of correspondence with mortgagors, and with local agents stationed in the Dakotas and Minnesota, especially Melvin Grigsby, C. M. Harrison, Edward J. Hodgson, and George W. Wishard. The correspondence concerns the examination of applications for loans, collection of interest, commissions, security, abstracts of title, extensions of mortgages, foreclosures, and taxes. Scattered legal papers such as mortgages and commission agreements are in the papers. There are miscellaneous items and 8 letter books dealing with the administration of the assignee of the firm, William H. Momsen, after June, 1893. The business record books consist of cashbooks, interest registers, receipt books, blotters, ledgers, and miscellaneous volumes.
