(5 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 590 Abstract: Papers of Charles Dadant, a Frenchman who immigrated to Hamilton, Illinois, in 1863 and established the bee supply firm Charles Dadant & Son in 1874. Dadant, in hundreds of articles in European and American bee journals, advocated the large movable-frame hive. It is by his name that this kind of hive, preferred by European beekeepers, is known on the continent. He also solved the problem of the safe transatlantic shipment of Italian golden bees. The papers consist of correspondence between Dadant and Edouard Bertrand, editor of Revue Internationale d'Apiculture; letters by Dadant's son Camille Pierre to Bertrand; letters to Charles Dadant & Son from many European and American bee men, among them L. L. Langstroth; and some letters to Frank C. Pellett, H. J. O. Walker, and H. F. Wilson. The collection provides information on beekeeping experiments, controversies, practices, and developments in the United States and Europe, and comments on political philosophy and world events. |

The letters give brief accounts of basic training, the climate in Texas, and reminiscences of Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Dahmer also provides short descriptions of leisure activities in camp at Le Mons, France, such as baseball and music, and of visiting Paris and St. Malo, France. |

Many letters concern investment in wheat “bonanza farms” near Fargo, North Dakota. |

Arranged by year into subject files, the collection is best for the years 1956-1967 and includes a wide variety of materials pertaining to his association with ABC as newsman and vice-president of news, special events, and public affairs, 1953-1967. Fragmentary, early material includes a scrapbook on events covered by Daly as White House correspondent for WJSV, Washington, D.C., 1938-1939; correspondence; and scripts for CBS Is There (later known as You Are There), The Front Page (CBS), his coverage of the Italian theater during World War II, and The Sangamon, an Edgar Lee Masters radio play. There are no scripts dating from the later period covered, but there are office memos, fan mail, and publicity for What's My Line? (CBS), John Daly and the News (ABC), and Voice of Firestone (NBC). Extensive files pertain to ABC news administration and operations, outside speaking engagements, involvement with professional groups such as the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters, and coverage of political conventions. The films and discs in the collection are spots made for the Water Pollution Advisory Board, narrated by Daly. |

The collection consists of constitutions and by-laws, planning documents, and other organizational materials; minutes, correspondence, and reports of the board of directors and the staff; press releases, newsletters, and other publications; program files; financial records; and information collected on other state and local arts organizations. The program files variously include proposals for grant funding, correspondence, and financial reports, but few narrative evaluations of the council's innovative projects are included. Best represented are projects aimed at senior citizens and one program which employed artists with CETA funds. |

Included are annual reports to the State Board of Control, minutes of the board of trustees and the separate governing bodies under which the institution operated during its early history, minutes of the building committee responsible for constructions at the institution, patient and inmate registers containing biographical data and information on the causes of the patients' insanity and/or indigence, a narrative journal of E.P. Titus, overseer of the Poor Farm (1877-1882), restraint records (1883-1887 and 1932-1941), and records of financial expenditures for the period 1875 to 1964. Each case is summarized in a coroner report which provides both pertinent information about the deceased and findings as to cause and date of death. Files on traffic deaths typically include traffic reports filed by the police. Files on deaths involving negligence, abuse, or foul-play typically include autopsy reports and inquest transcripts. Files on suicides include copies of suicide notes where applicable. In addition, news clippings and police photographs are present in some files. |

The 1863-1891 reports contain the information categories general statistics, kinds of textbooks used, schoolhouse data, and financial statements. The 1912-1965 reports provide information on student enrollment and attendance, names of persons less than twenty years of age residing in the school district, names of teachers, details about particular schools, and school financial statements. |

The records consist of letterpress books, seventeen of which contain company correspondence and two of which contain General Manager Eugene Shaw's personal correspondence. Also included are miscellaneous loose records consisting of timber “scale” books (winters 1866-1867); field books delineating timber stands on sections of land (1899, undated); and miscellaneous correspondence, business receipts, and legal documents (1861-1911). The microfilmed portion of this collection includes a daybook recording sales in a company store (1881), and the record of the Eau Claire dynamo and the production of city electric lights (1893-1894). |

(3 archives boxes) and 5 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Wis Mss QC; Micro 918 Abstract: Papers of Edward Daniels, a participant in political and social reform movements who was also the first state geologist of Wisconsin and colonel of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. The pre-war correspondence contains information on his lectures on geology and on his work for the Wisconsin Geological Survey, 1853-1861. A few letters touch upon his military career, 1861-1862, and some concern his partnership with Joseph Medill and Horace White in a speculative venture into coal mining in Illinois. After the war, Daniels moved to Virginia and the post-war correspondence is largely concerned with Virginia politics, a newspaper enterprise in Richmond, Daniels' attempt to establish a cooperative industrial school on his estate, and a cooperative land colonization project in Mexico in which he was interested. Sixteen diaries, containing brief entries for the period 1862-1894, accompany the correspondence. The collection also includes field notes taken for the Wisconsin Geological Survey and drafts of lectures advocating cooperatives. |

Daniels served in the Army Medical Corps in the Pacific from 1944 to 1947 and later worked as a civilian employee of the Army conducting laboratory and field investigations on the effects of heat and cold on personnel, the effects of clothing on the skin, and research on atomic bomb test sites. He later held positions as professor of dermatology at the University of Oregon, the University of Illinois, and at Cornell University/The New York Hospital. The collection documents Daniels' personal and professional activities mainly through correspondence dating from 1927; personal diaries, 1934-1942; and research notes (on microfilm). An avid photographer from boyhood, the collection includes many still and motion picture images taken by Daniels, from the 1930s to the 1990s, documenting family events; the Philippines (during the 1940s); Madison, Wisconsin (especially the Nakoma neighborhood); the University of Wisconsin Arboretum; Door County, Wisconsin; and New York City. |

In 1965 he canvassed for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in Jackson, Mississippi, and in the summer of 1966 he was active with the Cleveland Community Project (he was working for SDS at the time). The papers include flyers and leaflets, papers presented at conferences, other writings by Davis, a few letters, and University of Michigan student government brochures. |

Nearly half the collection consists of letters from Davis to Congressman John Fox Potter on the subjects of Wisconsin politics, the conduct of the Civil War, and problems of the Republican Party. Before 1856 Davis received letters regarding the slavery issue from prominent national figures such as Charles Sumner, John P. Hale, Joshua Giddings, and others. The correspondence, which is almost entirely of a political nature, also includes letters from state and other national Republican leaders, among them Salmon P. Chase, James R. Doolittle, Charles Durkee, William H. Seward, Carl Schurz, C. C. Washburn, and David Wilmot. Davis was appointed resident trustee of the property donated by Congress for the improvement of the Fox-Wisconsin Rivers in 1862. Numerous letters touch upon this development project. |

The collection documents Davis's artistic activities and ideas, 1958-1970, and the history and daily workings of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, as well as provides an impression of the nature and scope of the avant-garde, radical, and anti-establishment atmosphere of San Francisco and the nation during the 1960's. Call Number: WVM Mss 20 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Leonard C. Davy, an officer with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) during World War II. The bulk of the collection consists of the more than 250 photographs that Davy took during the World War II era. Over 110 of those photos document his overseas service with the predominantly Japanese-American 442nd RCT, including many identified photos of individuals within the unit, candid shots of the group in action, and many scenery shots of French and Italian locales. Other photos depict Davy's work with the Civilian Conservation Corps and his service with the Coastal Artillery in Panama. The papers include many certificates, including a signed certificate of appreciation from President George H. W. Bush, that document Davy's military service, from the Coastal Artillery through the 442nd RCT to his extensive service in the Army Reserves. Among the ephemera that Davy collected is a membership card for the 442nd Veterans Club and a New Year's card from a fellow member of the unit. Postwar newspaper clippings about the 442nd RCT show Davy's continued interest in his old unit. |

(See the Milwaukee Sentinel, June 4, 1893 for details.) The earliest letter books concern the insurance business, but the bulk of the collection relates to the operation of the loan business, especially mortgage loans on farm lands in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. There is a vast quantity of correspondence with mortgagors, and with local agents stationed in the Dakotas and Minnesota, especially Melvin Grigsby, C. M. Harrison, Edward J. Hodgson, and George W. Wishard. The correspondence concerns the examination of applications for loans, collection of interest, commissions, security, abstracts of title, extensions of mortgages, foreclosures, and taxes. Scattered legal papers such as mortgages and commission agreements are in the papers. There are miscellaneous items and 8 letter books dealing with the administration of the assignee of the firm, William H. Momsen, after June, 1893. The business record books consist of cashbooks, interest registers, receipt books, blotters, ledgers, and miscellaneous volumes. |
