Abstract: Papers of Louisville, Kentucky, civil rights activists Carl and Anne Braden, primarily documenting their work with the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF), 1954-1974, and the Social Organizing Committee for Economic and Social Justice (SOC), 1974-2006. Additional records of SCEF and its predecessor, the Southern Conference for Human Welfare (1938-1948) are also included and were once in the possession of James Dombrowski, who headed both organizations before the Bradens. The Bradens' career with SCEF is documented by correspondence and subject files about work as field organizers, editors of the Southern Patriot, and co-directors. Many mailings and sound recordings document the split within SCEF that led to the Bradens' resignation and the organization of the Southern Organizing Committee for Economic and Social Justice in 1975.

Abstract: Fragmentary papers of David Bradley, M.D., Wisconsin-raised writer, teacher, and member of the 1940 U.S. Olympic ski team. The papers consist of correspondence, drafts, and other materials concerning his book on the Finnish people, Lion Among Roses; dispatches sent the Wisconsin State Journal from Finland following the “winter war” in 1940; references to his experiences as a doctor with the Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests of 1946; and a semi-autobiographical essay by his father, Dr. H. C. Bradley.

Abstract: Collection documents the development of the Brady East STD Clinic from its origin in 1974 as a program of the Gay Peoples Union, a prominent gay rights group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to being a statewide leader in the battle against HIV/AIDS by the 1990s. The collection includes administrative records such as minutes, annual reports, correspondence, and newsletters, and well as general informational sources such as posters and brochures on human sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Abstract: Papers of Harry Bragarnick, a dry goods retailer and freelance arbitrator who immigrated from the Ukraine in 1878 and resided in Milwaukee from 1913 to 1960. The collection consists of clippings, correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous legal records which document Bragarnick's role in settling labor disputes, especially during the milk strikes of 1933, and in the hosiery and garment industries during the 1930s and 1940s. Also documented are his philanthropic activities in Milwaukee and efforts to mediate civil cases such as divorce and property disputes. A 16 mm silent film clip records a testimonial dinner held for Bragarnick in 1948. The photographs include images of Harry Bragarnick and Elizabeth Bragarnick; Harry Bragarnick with labor leaders; Harry Bragarnick's seventieth birthday celebration, May 9, 1948; and an exterior view of his dry goods store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, circa 1930.

Abstract: Papers of Brigadier General Bragg of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War, a hero of the “Iron Brigade.” His letters are mainly to his wife in Fond du Lac, Wis., written from camp and battlefield, and later a few from the House of Representatives in Washington and from Havana, Cuba, where he was consul general. There is a little material from Hong Kong, China, where he was stationed as consul general for four years, and some political letters from William F. Vilas and others. Letter books, 1888-1889, kept by Bragg while minister to Mexico, contain copies of his official letters to the Department of State, to the Mexican government, and to private citizens in both countries, and some copies of letters received at the legation. Included in the collection are some Civil War reminiscences, an address explaining the purposes of the Union Veteran Legion, a muster roll of Co. E of the 6th Infantry, and biographical material.

Abstract: The papers and photographs of Waldemar F. Breidster, a star football player at West Point, an officer who served in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II, and a brigadier general in the Wisconsin National Guard during the 1950s. Collection contains scattered documents relating to Breidster's military service and his football career at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Correspondence, proceedings from hearings, and medical reports relate to his efforts to retire with medical benefits from active service following World War II. Another set of documents reveal that Breidster exceeded the Army's standard weight limits prior to World War II and was ordered to lose eight pounds. He pointed out a special exemption he had received, though, and the order was rescinded. Other papers from his military service include pay and medical records, orders, and papers relating to Army Extension courses. Newspaper clippings, programs, and schedules reveal details about his athletic career at West Point. Focusing mainly on football, the papers show that Breidster was an All-American guard and captain of the team in 1922. Menus and dance programs document some of the social activities he participated in at West Point. The photographs, which are scattered and mostly unidentified, consist of several pictures of Breidster in uniform at various stages of his career, two photos of the 32nd Division staff, and shots taken at banquets and field artillery exercises. There is one photograph of an Army football team of which Breidster was a member.

Abstract: Records of the Bricklayers, Masons, and Plasterers International Union of America (BMPIUA), an international labor union representing workers in brick, block, and stone laying, plastering, masonry, and related trades. During the period covered by the bulk of these records, its history was characterized by efforts to work with employer and joint union-employer groups (such as the Associated General Contractors, the Mason Contractors Association, the Structural Clay Products Institute, and the National Joint Board for Settlement of Jurisdictional Disputes) to promote the construction industry and solve labor-management problems, and by jurisdictional conflicts with the Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association and other building trades unions. Abstract: Papers of Louis W. Bridgman, a Madison, Wisconsin, journalist, mainly consisting of correspondence. Many letters pertain to Bridgman's career as a reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, 1906-1913, and for the Associated Press, 1913-1930, and as editor for the University of Wisconsin Extension Division. The remainder of the exchanges derive from his interest in civic and historical affairs. Included is correspondence relating to the Saturday Lunch Club of Madison, 1914-1918, Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin, 1940-1960, and Antigo, Wisconsin. Correspondence with Albert H. Griffith and Boyd B. Stutler deals with Bridgman's interest in Abraham Lincoln and John Brown; Amos N. Wilder correspondence concerns the family of novelist Thornton Wilder; and John Earl Baker correspondence deals with Baker's various services for the Chinese government, 1916-1940s, when he served as famine relief director, Inspector-General of the Burma Road, and in other capacities.

Abstract: Family papers of two Marquette County, Wisconsin, brothers-in-law, James A. Briggs and Robert Mitchell. The papers consist primarily of correspondence between various family members revealing their loyalty to the Episcopal Church and the Republican Party, and other aspects of the lives of a well-to-do family in the 1870s and 1880s. Some of Robert Mitchell's correspondence is of a political nature, relating to the growing opposition in the Wisconsin legislature and nationally to radical Republicans and the Ulysses S. Grant administration, and to the 1875 defeat of radical Republican U.S. Senator Matthew Carpenter in which Mitchell played a part. Also includes an account book for Briggs' flour and carding mills at Briggsville, 1853-1860, and a biographical sketch of Robert Mitchell.

Abstract: Papers of a family from Union (Rock County, Wisconsin) consisting of correspondence regarding primarily news of family members school, health, and travels. Most of the correspondence was sent between J. Wells Brigham, who left Vermont to settle in Wisconsin, and his brother Bela, who remained in New England. Major news and political events, such as the Chicago and Peshtigo fires, are also mentioned. Yellow note cards are matched with each letter and summarize the letter's content. Early letters (in Folder 1) concern financial matters in Vermont; a brief family history is included in a later letter (in Folder 6).

Abstract: Papers of Charles I. Brigham, an experimental and scientific farmer interested in improving dairy methods and in dairy and sheep herd improvements, consisting mainly of records of the operation of the family farm, a family-operated creamery, and a cheese factory all located at Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Included are crop notes, inventories, time books, and financial records, as well as personal correspondence and diaries of several family members, including Jerome Brigham, Charles' father. Also present are financial records of the Blue Mounds Congregational Church, 1892-1911, and minutes of the Blue Mounds Cheese Factory, the Blue Mounds Creamery, the West Blue Mounds Association of Patrons of Industry, and the Blue Mounds Percheron Association.

Abstract: Papers of Jerome R. Brigham, a Milwaukee attorney. The early papers consist largely of personal letters from former schoolmates at Amherst College and from relatives including his brother-in-law, Horace G. Bliss, in regard to real estate matters and the large farm at Blue Mounds, Wis., owned jointly with Bliss, and from the operators of the farm. Present for 1854-1855 are typewritten copies of letters written by prominent orators of the day to Brigham while he was secretary of the lecture committee of the Milwaukee Young Men's Association. Beginning about 1859, there are scattered letters on political subjects, including several from John F. Potter, relating to the election of 1860 and secession and occasional letters from Horace Rublee in regard to Wisconsin and national party matters and politics and to the Milwaukee Sentinel. Some letters of Senator Timothy O. Howe relate to the patronage aspects of the struggle between President Johnson and Congress. In the early 1870s, there are letters to Brigham in his capacity as a member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, relating to the presidency of Dr. John H. Twombly.

Abstract: Papers of Brisbane, a doctor, minister, editor, author, and a South Carolina slaveholder who turned abolitionist and moved north where he freed his slaves, edited abolitionist publications in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and participated in the experiment in communal living at Brook Farm in Massachusetts in 1845. After coming to Wisconsin in 1853 to promote the development of Arena, Wisconsin, he served as clerk of the state senate, 1854, and as chaplain of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, 1861-1862, and was appointed by Salmon P. Chase to be tax commissioner of the District of South Carolina during the early years of Reconstruction. The collection contains twenty-two letters written by Brisbane himself, of which more than half pertain to his effort to secure the 1860 Republican presidential nomination for Chase. Also present are Brisbane's notes summarizing his activities, 1834-1842; diaries, kept by Brisbane and other family members, 1844-1878; pro-slavery notes for the period prior to 1834; anti-slavery essays; sermons and addresses, 1844-1876; and clippings, biographical material, a few family letters and other miscellaneous items, including a minute book of Spring Green Baptist Church Women's Missionary Circle, 1875-1877. The two photographs are of the Arena farm.

Abstract: Papers, primarily 1976-2009, include published and unpublished writings of J. Quinn Brisben, who had been a high school teacher in Chicago and became a Socialist Party candidate for mayor of Chicago in 1975, vice president of United States in 1976 (with Frank Zeidler, former mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the presidential candidate), and president in 1992 (with William Edwards of San Francisco). Published writings are primarily from socialist and literary journals; unpublished writings detail extensive travels in the United States and abroad, including Russia, Cuba, Eastern Europe and Central America. Other materials include correspondence, news clippings, two scrapbooks and campaign materials from the 1972 and 1991-1992 campaigns; news clippings, photocopies of photographs and other materials from his involvement in the disabilities rights movement, and a collection of political and campaign buttons. 45 photographs are primarily family- and campaign-related. Four videorecordings include an interview with Brisben and a visit with Studs Terkel.

Abstract: Papers of Steven C. Brist, a three-term Democratic assemblyman for the 67th assembly district from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, documenting his political career. Files consist of legislation records organized by bill number, constituent correspondence referenced by last name and topic, news clippings, and newspaper columns authored by Brist. The bulk of the collection consists of papers from Brist's second and third terms in office (1982-1985) with only a limited amount of material from his first term (1976-1977). Brist was instrumental in creating legislation relating to securities, property and real estate, employee disclosure of improper activities in governmental units (whistleblower protection), and the designation of milk as the official state beverage. Other topics covered in the collection include marital property reform, changing the legal drinking age, mandatory seat belt usage, voter registration, abortion and wrongful birth, and groundwater pollution and waste management.

Abstract: George Brooks (1897-1978) was a La Crosse, Wis., resident who worked at the Bodega Lunch Club, but was best known for training bloodhounds. From 1932 to about 1960, Brooks assisted law enforcement officials in over 3000 cases in tracking and apprehending criminal suspects and finding individuals who were lost. His most famous cases included the apprehension of Jens Thompson in 1937, a Freeborn, Minnesota, resident who shot four neighbors, and the 1939 tracking of Ray Olson in northern Wisconsin, who after shooting two deputies, was later killed while trying to escape. Brooks gained national fame, and articles about Brooks and his dogs appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Life Magazine, American Magazine, and Reader's Digest.. The collection includes correspondence (1938-1955), photographs (ca. 1930s-1950s) of dogs and pedigrees, the La Crosse area, and people. Most photographs are black and white, and the bulk of them do not include dates, names, or any type of caption. Other materials include publicity items (ca. 1930s-1950s) such as posters, a photocopy of a radio script, and other materials.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Carleton L. Brosius, a physical trainer for the Army during World War I and a participant in the 1920 Olympic games. The bulk of the collection deals with Brosius's dedication to physical fitness. General orders, letters of commendation from Army personnel, and a scrapbook document his work as an Army trainer, while correspondence and a scrapbook full of ephemera and photographs document his participation in the Olympics. Two other scrapbooks provide additional biographical information about Brosius; they include photographs, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and letters. There is no documentation of Brosius's service in the Spanish-American War nor the Mexican Border War, and only general orders convey a sense of Brosius's stateside movements during World War I. This collection also includes the music for “March of the Maccabees,” which Brosius wrote in 1904; military certificates of promotion; a certificate commemorating Brosius's twenty-fifth anniversary as a member of the American Legion; and a thank you card from General Charles King.

Abstract: Papers of Charles Broughton, an editor of the Sheboygan Press (Wis.). Most of the materials pertain to Broughton's other activities as member of the Wisconsin Democratic party, philanthropist, anti-prohibitionist, fund raiser, conservationist, champion of the Wisconsin cheese industry, and patron of state and local history. Some of the correspondence deals with the management of the newspaper. Due to his newspaper work and broad range of activities, Broughton exchanged letters with many people of state and national importance. Also of interest is correspondence from a number of servicemen during World War II, sent to Broughton for inclusion in the newspaper.

Abstract: Papers of a journalism educator and editor/publisher (1954-1967) of the Cadott Sentinel, Cadott, Wisconsin, an award-winning weekly newspaper, including personal correspondence, photographs, and business and professional material. The business and professional papers consist of financial records and correspondence concerning his early career as a copywriter for the Arthur Towell advertising agency, his purchase of the Sentinel, his leadership in the Wisconsin Press Association, and his relationship with many journalists and Wisconsin politicians such as Lester Johnson, Gaylord Nelson, Alvin O'Konski, Vernon Thomson, and Alexander Wiley. Personal correspondence, which is predominantly outgoing, details his education at the University of Wisconsin during the 1940s and at the University of Minnesota during the 1960s, his career as a Methodist lay minister, and his work as publicist for the Wisconsin-Nicaragua Partners of the Americas. The latter files include photographs and newspaper columns concerning a 1965 trip to Nicaragua by the Partners. Abstract: Papers of Raymond H. Browe, an Evangelical United Brethren minister, who for thirty-four years served Evangelical U.B. parishes in Wheeler, Dorchester, Marshfield, Chili, and Prairie Farm, Wis. Born in Menomonie, Wis., Browe married Ivy McClaine in 1923. The couple had five children. The papers relate to Browe's ministry and include church histories and anniversary programs from the Dunn County (Wis.) area, a diary (1952-1956), notes, and text of about eight hundred sermons written and delivered by Browe, as well as Browe's sermons for children (1959-1962). Most of of the sermons were sequentially numbered and many include notations regarding dates and locations of delivery. A “Pastor's Pocket Record and Ritual Book” (1936-circa 1965) includes a few records of marriages, baptisms, and funerals, some meditations, chronologies of sermon titles given, financial records, a record of church events, and an title list to numbered sermons. The title list to the numbered sermons has been photocopied and is separately foldered.

Abstract: Primarily diaries recording Jabez Brown's trip to Indiana to Wisconsin in 1855 and his work as teacher and farmer in Juneau and Sauk counties, as school principal in Ironton and Hillsboro, and as a Quaker lecturer in behalf of the temperance movement. During the last decade of his life, he resided in Madison and he describes briefly some of the civic and university events there. Poems, essays, and lectures by Brown and a few family letters accompany the diaries. Diaries, 1859-1876, contain the family record of Jabez and Sarah Brown and several remedies and cures for wounds and sicknesses.

Abstract: Papers of Brown, a Presbyterian pastor and local historian in Janesville and Beloit, Wisconsin; including family correspondence, clippings on Beloit history, and a large number of diaries and notebooks kept by Brown and his wife, Hila Bennett Brown. Hila Brown's diaries contain reports on her school, church, and musical activities prior to her marriage. William Brown's notebooks consist mainly of sermon ideas, financial accounts, business records concerning his father's property in Beloit, and genealogical information. The volume for the 1895 contains interesting diary entries made during a visit to the Stockbridge Indian Reservation. A typed copy of 1877 diary entries describes a camping trip to the Apostle Islands. One diary (1865) was kept by Belle Waterman whose relationship to the Browns has not been determined.

Abstract: Material collected by social and peace activist William O. Brown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, relating to his involvement with the Milwaukee area American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker political and philanthropic organization, and the World Federalist Association, an international peace, democracy and human rights federation. The papers consist primarily of committee rosters, briefings, memos, meeting agendas, and speeches, as well as leaflets and pamphlets related to AFSC campaigns arranged chronologically from 1979-1994. There is one folder of similar materials relating to the World Federalist Association. The papers document AFSC’s charitable work in the American Midwest, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as well as the organization’s promotion of peace in America and abroad. Additionally, the papers document the structure of the organization and the Quaker ideologies that supported and motivated member activities.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee businessman primarily documenting the many civic involvements of his retirement years (1918-1949), especially his general interests in education, the Catholic Church, Milwaukee history, and Milwaukee business conditions. Included are correspondence; subject files concerning specific involvements such as the Milwaukee Board of Harbor Commissioners, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the 1948 Corporation; minutes; reports; numerous biographical clipping scrapbooks (on microfilm), testimonials, and other biographical information; and writings and speeches. The large file of writings and books by Bruce includes works on education and commercial organizations and draft chapters of an unpublished book on the Jewish question in the United States. Pertaining to the early history of the Bruce Publishing Company are financial ledgers and journals and examples of advertising materials. Later operations of the firm are documented by religious manuscripts published by the company (some by Fulton J. Sheen) and by runs of the Bruce Buzzer and Bruce Cooperator, employee newsletters, in the SHSW Library. Bruce's autobiography and other published writings are held by the SHSW Library.

Abstract: Helen Finkelstein Bruner worked at the University of Wisconsin School for Workers in the 1940s and 1950s and later at the UW Extension Center for Community Leadership Development, where she served as a specialist on Latin American migrants from 1966-1976. Her husband, Ervin M. Bruner, founded two interracial cooperatives at UW-Madison, served as a Dane County Family and Juvenile Court Judge, and was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. The Helen Finkelstein Bruner and Ervin Bruner Papers include organizational and academic records, correspondence, publications, newspaper clippings, ephemera, photographs, and negatives documenting: Helen Finkelstein Bruner's academic career; Ervin Bruner's work in the Youth Hostel and cooperative movement; his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1B S.A and Troop 100; the couple's life in the Truax Project for veterans; and the students and faculty of the School for Workers. The collection was compiled by their daughter Cathie Bruner and donated to the UW Archives in 2015.

Abstract: Papers of Harry A. Bruno, a public relations counsel and aviation pioneer. The bulk of the collection is publicity material prepared by H.A. Bruno and Associates Inc., and other Bruno firms for clients such as Defense Special Trains, 1941; the Hindenburg's maiden flight, 1936; National Biscuit Company, 1934-1935; Standard Oil of New Jersey, 1936; and a host of aviation events. Included are outlines, press releases, photographs, publicity samples, and clippings. The correspondence deals with business matters, but also includes letters about his book Wings Over America (1942) and the New York Lotos Club. Prominent correspondents include Bernard Baruch, Thomas E. Dewey, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Herbert Hoover, J. Edgar Hoover, Charles A. Lindbergh, Douglas MacArthur, Frank E. Mason, Richard M. Nixon, Francis Cardinal Spellman, Harry S. Truman, Nathan Twining, Orville Wright, and many others. Also present are complete drafts, research material, publicity, and printed matter relating to Wings; articles both by and about Bruno; reviews of a biography by Princine Calitri; photographs; memorabilia; and “Reminiscences of Fifty Years in Aviation,” an oral history interview transcript. Abstract: Papers of Alfred Brunson, 1815-1882, a Methodist minister who settled at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, in 1835 as presiding elder of the region north of Rock Island, Illinois, touching upon his activities as district supervisor of Indian missions, sub-Indian agent at La Pointe, chaplain in the Civil War, and holder of numerous minor civil offices. Contains letterbooks with copies of his correspondence, 1835-1844, with the War Department on Indian missions and the La Pointe agency; and a journal of his trip from Meadville, Pennsylvania, to Prairie du Chien. Also includes articles, lectures, and speeches written by Brunson on various subjects, and a sketch of him written by his daughter, Ella C. Brunson, in 1915.

Brye's papers primarily center on his service as a 1968 Third District Democratic Delegate for the Presidential Primary including the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Brye also compiled research on the 1972 presidential campaigns of Hubert H. Humphrey and George McGovern and 1968 Wisconsin gubernatorial campaigns of Bronson La Follette, Gaylord Nelson and Pat Lucey.
