BWMT-Milwaukee provided a safe environment for gay males, interracial couples, and individuals interested in interracial dating. It also raised awareness about and combated racism within Milwaukee's gay community and homophobia within its black community. The collection includes brochures and fliers, newsletters, correspondence between the Milwaukee chapter and the national association, agendas and minutes from membership and steering committee meetings, and information about the 1987 national convention held in Milwaukee. The collection also contains some general information about the national association (NABWMT). |

Interviews focus on domestic and social life, agricultural and other work, education, religion, relationships with white and black neighbors, genealogy, and the gradual movement to more urban areas which began at the turn of the 20th century. The interviews were conducted by Zachary L. Cooper and Emilie Tari under grants from the Wisconsin American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Also includes interview abstracts. |

Mrs. Blaine spent and gave away so much money, and was involved in so many activities, that her Chicago mansion took on the aspects of an institution as well as a home; and in 1928 she set up an office in the Farwell Building. In these two places causes were initiated, plans were made, and conferences were held, for all of which records were always kept. The collection exhibits in great quantity and detail information concerning office procedure. Written messages constantly flowed between her and her secretaries, and the papers include methods outlined for office management, diaries and reports of secretaries, questions and recommendations, summaries of telephone conversations, gift information with annotations as to Mrs. Blaine's intent, press releases, and financial records including bills, accounts, cash books, and ledgers. |

Blaine, a Wisconsin progressive Republican state senator from Boscobel, 1909-1913, attorney general, 1919-1921, governor, 1921-1927, United States Senator, 1927-1933, and member of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, 1933-1934. The collection consists mainly of correspondence and eight volumes of speeches and relates chiefly to state finances and taxation, state social welfare matters, prohibition, law enforcement, education, politics, and, somewhat diffusely, the progressive movement. Over eighty percent of the papers relate to the six years of Blaine's governorship, and present a comprehensive picture of the legislation, political issues, and state administration during that period. |

There are a number of other family letters; Miss Blair's own correspondence, 1876-1910, chiefly relating to her professional work at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; and a few records of the Young Women's Christian Association of Milwaukee and other Milwaukee social service organizations. |

(7 archives boxes), 1 tape recording, and 1 film Call Number: Mss 234; Tape 303A; AB 881 Abstract: Papers of a leader of the Wisconsin Communist Party, mainly consisting of correspondence, writings, biographical material, and subject files. Biographical material includes transcripts of two taped interviews (one of the tapes is in the collection) dealing with his views on politics and the Vietnam War and a film of a Great American Dream Machine (WNET-TV) episode based on his life. Correspondence, 1941-1979, is incomplete although it provides a picture of some party concerns. The later files are dominated by exchanges with a sister residing in Hungary. Writings, 1934-1979, include poetry and copies of speeches, articles, and press releases, many apparently written in behalf of the party. Of the subject files, the material on the Wisconsin Communist Party is most valuable. Here are included materials issued by the party which are not identified as having been written by Blair and clippings pertaining to the Wisconsin Gentile League and an advertisement placed in some Wisconsin newspapers. |

Three women were children when the Japanese Empire attacked Pearl Harbor. They relate their responses to Pearl Harbor and what they, as children, did to contribute in the war effort. Each of the other five young adult women interviewed conveyed their wartime experiences. No recordings of the interviews were received with the collection. |

(7 archives boxes) Call Number: Whitewater Mss BB Abstract: Papers of an Edgerton, Wisconsin, attorney and Republican assemblyman (1954-1962), primarily pertaining to his political career. Blanchard was chairman of the Assembly State Affairs and Rules Committees, a member of the Board of Government Operations, Republican Floor Leader of the Assembly in 1959, and Speaker of the Assembly from 1960 until his death in December 1962. In 1961-1962, he was chairman of the Joint Legislative Council and in 1960, chairman of the Platform Committee of the Wisconsin Republican Party, and a Richard M. Nixon delegate from Wisconsin's First Congressional District to the Republican national convention. The collection includes general correspondence on legislative and political topics; speeches, primarily delivered to constituent groups; campaign files; files on Republican Party state conventions and the 1960 national convention; and subject files on Assembly committees, legislation, and issues. Information is present on committee assignments, reapportionment, the Water Resources Committee of the Joint Legislative Council, Blachard's work on the Republican state platform committee (1960-1962), and his support for Warren Knowles for governor in 1962 and for Richard Nixon for president in 1960. |

(4 archives boxes, 1 reel of microfilm [35 mm]) Call Number: Whitewater Mss BA; Whitewater Micro 15; Micro 976 Abstract: Papers of a conservative Republican politician from Edgerton, Wisconsin, who served in the Wisconsin Legislature (1924-1932) and the House of Representatives (1932-1934). Included are constituent and personal correspondence, political files, speeches, and biographical clippings available on microfilm. Except for some 1934 clippings, the collection relates entirely to Blanchard's four terms in the legislature. Unfortunately this documentation consists primarily of constituent correspondence and it does not illuminate his important role in the factional struggles between Stalwart and Progressive Republicans. Of special note are minutes and other papers on the Interim Committee on Forestry and Public Lands for which Blanchard was the chairman. Political files comprised of correspondence, press releases, and speeches are best on his unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 1931. Prominent correspondents in this category include William J. Campbell. |

Political letters relate mainly to local village and county offices held by Blanding and to his unsuccessful campaign for the state senate in 1894. Among other materials in the collection are a few letters and records relating to transportation and logging on the St. Croix River; plat maps of surveyed lands around the St. Croix Valley; minutes of the St. Croix Literary Association, 1870-1871; a few papers pertaining to the founding and development of the Polk County Agricultural Society, 1886-1901; manuscript articles on the temperance movement and on Indian and white traditions in the St. Croix region; genealogical data; and other family correspondence, 1901-1958. |

(12 boxes) 327 volumes Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 132 Abstract: The majority of the collection consists of over three hundred accounting books that document the financial history of the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company. Most of the records are from the 1880s through the early 1920s, although some date as early as 1862 and as late as 1944. A variety of records are included in the collection, such as general ledgers and journals, cash books, inventory books, and cash customer journals. The records trace the history of the brewery, the bottling plant, various branches, and Valentin Blatz's Estate. The Blatz collection documents the company's rapid growth in the late nineteenth century, the sale of the business in 1890, the disposition of the Valentin Blatz estate, and the impact of the Prohibition movement. There is also extensive information pertaining to the beer bottling industry, including data about finances, vendors, customers, productions, product development, and sales. The records also demonstrate the complicated network of branches and depots that was in place as early as the 1880s. |

Bleicher, a Democratic Party activist, former state chairman of the Democratic Party (1978-1980), and mathematics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The collection documents Bleicher's service on the Democratic National Committee, his participation in several National Democratic Conventions as a delegate (1968-1976), and his support of various candidates for public office. Noteworthy campaigns Bleicher was involved with include the presidential campaigns of Eugene McCarthy (1968), George McGovern (1972), and Fred Harris (1976). Other campaign files are from Bleicher's position as campaign manager for Wisconsin Assembly candidate Midge Miller (1970) and Madison mayoral candidate Leo Cooper (1971). Also included are materials relating to Bleicher's tenure on the Energy Research Advisory Board and a small amount of material pertaining to Bleicher's mathematical career. |

Bleistein graduated from Washington University in 1939 and worked as a review attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in the early 1940s. The papers principally document her involvement with the Greater Milwaukee United Nations Association (GMUNA) and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). |

Blessing, a Milwaukee native who served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in England, France, and Switzerland in 1945-1946 and served as a radio/teletype operator. The collection is made up of photocopies of three memoirs written by Blessing entitled Coming of Age in the 1930's, A Yank on the Homefront, 1943-1945, and A Yank Abroad, 1945-1946. Blessing wrote frequently during his enlistment to family and friends in Milwaukee and kept many diaries. Included with the collection is the original correspondence and diaries as well as typed transcripts. It is principally from these transcripts that the memoirs were derived. |

Correspondence deals with payment of taxes, rentals, collections, and western Wisconsin and southern Minnesota real estate transactions, with occasional reference to Bliss's position as city engineer. There are letters from Cadwallader C. Washburn, Levi Burnell, and Samuel D. Hastings concerning business affairs, and from Senator Angus Cameron in regard to the La Crosse post office building. In addition to the correspondence, there are bound and unbound deeds, abstracts, land plats, surveyors' field notes, office accounts, and other similar papers accumulated or produced by Bliss and his associates in their various business enterprises. |

The collection documents the creative process of composition and of Blitzstein's efforts to reconcile the political, psychological, and musical aspects of composition. Blitzstein was most famous for: his operas The Cradle Will Rock (1937), Regina (1949), Reuben, Reuben (1955), and Juno (1959); his motion picture score for Native Land (Frontier Films, 1942); The Airborne Symphony (1946); and his adaptation of The Threepenny Opera (1954). The collection is comprised chiefly of scores and scripts, with recordings, related correspondence, research material, and clippings, pertaining to Blitzstein's work in motion pictures, opera, ballet, theater, and symphonic orchestra. As co-chair of the Organic Food Act Working Group, Blobaum actively participated in shaping the 1990 Organic Foods Production Act and seeing it through Congress. Related topics documented in the papers include solar and other renewable energy applications on farms, resource conservation, farmland preservation, corporate farming, the development of national and international organic standards, organic integrity, funding for organic research, and the role of faith-based organizations in promoting sustainable rural development. Included are sketches and survey maps (some in watercolor), descriptions of interior lines, and field notes primarily for Waukesha County, but also relating to portions of Milwaukee, Racine, and Walworth counties. In addition there are lists of property owners, assessment rates, and legal descriptions of property for parts of Waukesha County. Personal material includes a notebook of surveying assignments at Chester Academy, 1836, and a docket book, 1844-1861, for School District No. 6, Town of Vernon, for which Blood was the clerk, including accounts and narrative school reports. The Town of Muskego survey notebook includes two lists of names, circa 1863, probably from the Town of Vernon, that contain information on military status including age, place of birth, occupation, and physical impairments. |

These microfilmed scrapbooks contain playbills, reviews, clippings, and obituaries of famous actors, actresses, and film and theater personalities. A small group of the scrapbooks concerns athletes, and another group contains “Autograms,” stars' answers to a few short questions posed by Blum. Most of the theatrical performances documented were for legitimate theater performances in New York City, though other cities are represented as are some revues and vaudeville productions. |
