Abstract: Papers, 1913-1959, of Howard K. Beale, an American history faculty member at the University of North Carolina (1935-1948) and the University of Wisconsin (1948-1959). Particularly interested in the Civil War and Reconstruction, Theodore Roosevelt, historiography, and academic freedom, Beale was also active in numerous liberal public causes. The papers are incomplete and document his education, teaching career, speeches and writings, and some of the social causes in which he was involved, including his work as an advisor to conscientious objectors during World War II, and his involvement with the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council, for which he served as West Coast Director and Director.

Abstract: Records of Bearings for Re-establishment, an organization formed in 1965 to provide support and counseling to help former priests and other clergy return to secular life. The organization dissolved in 1973. Included are a recorded historical interview; administrative records of the main New York City office and various satellite offices; financial and fundraising records; correspondence; client files; information on Opportunities for Professional Transition, a for-profit counseling subsidiary, and related organizations; plus a filmed interview with William Restivo, founder of the organization. The client files contain detailed information on the career and personal lives of approximately 3000 individuals.

Abstract: Papers (mainly 1960-1975) of an economics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Extension from 1948-1956, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1956-1978. The collection documents his professional and volunteer activities with groups such as the Committee on Taxation, Resources and Economic Development and the Wisconsin Property Owners League. Collection also contains Becker's personal and professional correspondence, conference materials, published and unpublished works, and teaching materials. Also contains records concerning UW-Milwaukee committees on which Becker served, including the Academic Program and Curriculum Committee and the Management Science Ph.D. Review Committee, and his role in founding the UWM Credit Union and his work with the Milwaukee Urban Observatory.

Abstract: Papers of Beate Klein Becker, reflecting her involvement in and the activities of the New York chapter of the Committee to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa (COBLSA). Materials generally concern the Committee’s investigation of corporate investment practices and banking policies and their relationship to apartheid in South Africa, plus the Committee’s actions to influence changes in corporate behavior and to increase public awareness of the issues. Included are clippings, near-print publications and documents, correspondence, meeting minutes, notes, and agendas, flyers, newsletters, and materials from internal teach-ins and forums.

Abstract: Papers of Dismas P. Becker, a community organizer and former Catholic priest, who became a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. With Father James Groppi, Becker was an active participant in welfare rights activities in Milwaukee, and in demonstrations in Madison to protest the threatened cutback in funding of welfare. The collection includes fragmentary records of his work with various Milwaukee welfare groups, in particular with the Council on Urban Life (of the Milwaukee archdiocese) and the Milwaukee County Welfare Rights Organization. The papers consist of by-laws and constitutions of the organizations, membership lists, financial records, and minutes of meetings. A few personal papers are also present, including a campaign pamphlet, newspaper clippings illustrating Becker's personal involvement in the demonstrations, a small amount of correspondence, and several written reports and papers.

Abstract: Papers of John M. Becker, a Green County, Wisconsin judge and ardent pacifist, convicted of sedition and removed from office in 1918 for promoting a ballot referendum on the question of U.S. entry into World War I. The papers include newspaper clippings, speeches and transcripts related to his 1918 trial and anti-war stance, as well as documents concerning his libel suit against the local newspaper, The Monroe Evening Times, and documents pertaining to a suit brought by his client, the Langlade County Creamery Company, against the State of Wisconsin, opening up the manufacture of Swiss cheese in Wisconsin. The papers also include materials from his election campaigns, 1898-1923.

Abstract: This collection contains the papers of Joyce Becker, who served as an academic staff member at UW-Madison for nearly forty years. Becker was hired to work in the lab of Dr. Harold Rusch in 1959 and retired from UW-Madison's Environmental Toxicology Center in 1997. This collection holds documents related to Becker's work on academic staff committees in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly the Academic Staff Advisory Committee (ASAC), the UW Doctoral Cluster Task Force, the Committee on Women in Health Sciences, and the Committee on Employment and Promotion of Non-Faculty Academic Staff. Materials from these committees include reports, employment statistics from UW-Madison, data and surveys about the gender composition of employees in different job roles, drafts of reports written by Becker, Becker's handwritten notes, drafts of university policies related to academic staff, and correspondence with the university administration.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1963-1968, relating to the social and political concerns of a New York City school teacher. Included are correspondence, form letters, clippings, flyers, newsletters, and other printed matter relating to the United Federation of Teachers' “Adopt-a-School” program in Prince Edward County, Virginia, in 1963; its volunteer teaching during the Mississippi Freedom Summer project in 1964; and its support of full integration of New York City schools. Her leadership in the opposition to the war in Vietnam is documented in files on the Teachers Committee for Peace in Vietnam and the Fifth Avenue Vietnam Peace Parade Committee.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1964-1967, of Robert Beech, a civil rights volunteer with the Delta Ministry in Hattiesburg, Mississippi from May 1964 to September 1967, documenting his work with the Ministry as well as the social and political conditions of the rural African-American population of the Mississippi Delta region in the 1960s, and consisting of correspondence with other staff members, ministers, and leaders from other civil rights organizations. Much of the information regarding the conditions of rural African-Americans in Mississippi comes from the reports of former volunteers who wrote to Beech about their experiences in Mississippi and their reactions to the work being done there. Also included are many official reports of the Delta Ministry and other civil rights groups such as the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Southern Student Organizing Committee (SSOC), as well as newsletters, photographs, pamphlets, and other published materials of the Ministry and other organizations.

Abstract: Papers of Beggs, president of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. and other utilities, consisting of correspondence, photographs, records of personal financial expenditures, and subject files pertaining to various utilities with which he was involved such as the Edison Electric Light Company, The Milwaukee Electric and Railway and Light Co. (TMERL) and the St. Louis Car Co. Correspondence primarily dates from the1890s when he managed the Chicago Edison Electric Co. It also pertains to other companies within the system, such as the Harrisburg Electric Co., for which he had responsibilities. A small portion of the correspondence pertains to TMERL and the Appleton Electric Co. The photographs received with the papers are divided into eight lots that document the staff and offices of the Edison Electric Company of Chicago; TMERL facilities and a staff outing; and his Beggs' Isle estate, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. The original photographs are available in the Visual Materials Archive in Madison; they are in Milwaukee on microfilm. Portraits of Beggs, which were separated to the Visual Materials Name File, are available in Milwaukee on microfilm.

Abstract: In 1982 Wisconsin became the first state to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodation. One year later, Governor Anthony S. Earl formed the Council on Lesbian and Gay Issues as an advisory group to make recommendations concerning the implementation of Chapter 112 of the Laws of Wisconsin, popularly known as the "gay rights law." This collection consists of records of the council and includes biennial and final reports, press releases, correspondence, brochures, fliers, surveys, and news clippings. It was compiled by Mark Behar, who served on the council from 1983 to 1987.

The collection documents Behm's involvements in organizations such as the Mass Party Organizing Committee (1971-1976), the Common Sense Coalition (1978-1979), and issues such as the case involving Michael Cooper, an AWOL ROTC student who died resisting arrest (1976-1977), the Peace and Jobs Referendum (1978-1979), the James Rowen mayoral campaign (1978-1979), and the Howard Morland-Progressive magazine hydrogen bomb case (1979-1980). Materials include correspondence, leaflets, broadsides, some organizational records, and subject files. Also included is a “War Resisters Organizing Manual” prepared by the War Resisters League in 1977. Photographs include images from several peace marches in Madison, Wisconsin Dells, and Waupun, Wis., circa 1976.

Among the plays he wrote or adapted are Amphitryon 38 (1937), Biography (1932), The Cold Wind and the Warm (1958), End of Summer (1935), Fanny (1954), Jacobowsky and the Colonel (1944), Jane (1952), No Time for Comedy (1939), The Pirate (1942), Rain from Heaven (1934), and The Second Man (1927); screenplays represented include Bonjour Tristesse (Columbia, 1958), Ninotchka (MGM, 1939), and Waterloo Bridge (MGM, 1940). Abstract: Genealogies of the Belisle-Dufresne family and the Parent-Mars family, and histories of the early settlers at Somerset (Wis.) and the Apple River Settlement (Polk County, Wis.), compiled by Earl Belisle. The first genealogy is that of Joseph Belisle (born 1845) and his wife Celina Dufresne of Somerset, Wisconsin, their children, and their ancestors in the province of Quebec including surnames Germain and Bouin. The Parent-Mars genealogy concerns the French-Canadian ancestors of Marie-Louise Parent (1851-1938) of Somerset, Wisconsin who, in 1872, married Joseph Maher (later Mars). Additionally, there is a history, including genealogies, of the early settlers of Somerset (Wis.), especially Louis and Joseph Parent as well as a history of the French-Canadians who settled in the Apple River Settlement, near Range (Wis.) with family genealogies. Included throughout are reproductions of photographs, maps, and family documents.

Included are files documenting her legislative interests, particularly her work on child abuse issues, sexual predator and stalking laws, and files accumulated during her term as member and chair of the Environmental Resources Committee. The collection contains committee, legislative, and issue files which include background information, notes from meetings, press releases, correspondence, reports, prepared testimony, and drafts of bills; and Bell’s newsletters, speeches, and press releases.

Abstract: Murphy W. Bell is a Baton Rouge attorney active in civil rights cases throughout the state of Louisiana. A past president of the Baton Rouge chapter of the NAACP, he has represented both this organization and CORE as well as individuals in legal contests in the civil rights field. This film consists of his files of closed cases which fall in the years 1958-1966. The files are chiefly legal documents such as petitions, motions, affidavits, etc.; but also include some correspondence, clippings, a few photographs, material from NAACP legal conferences, and a small amount of Ku Klux Klan literature.

Abstract: Papers of Ralph Bellamy, a noted actor whose career has spanned more than five decades and encompasses all major areas of entertainment - theater, motion pictures, radio, television, and writing. Documentation of Bellamy's theatrical work is especially rich, although all aspects of his career are covered. Included in the collection are biographical materials, an oral history interview transcript, awards and certificates, newspaper clippings and reviews, correspondence, and transcripts of Bellamy's Congressional testimony concerning income tax averaging legislation. Within the production files are programs from productions of the Ralph Bellamy Players (Des Moines, Iowa, 1926-1928); several programs, scripts, and other papers regarding plays, motion pictures, and television mini-series; and extensive information concerning Bellamy's portrayal of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Sunrise at Campobello (theater, 1958-1960; film, 1960). Also in the collection are drafts, typescripts, and a printed copy of Bellamy's memoirs, When the Smoke Hit the Fan (Doubleday, 1979).

Abstract: Tape-recorded interviews conducted in 1976 by Clem Imhoff for the Beloit Bicentennial Commission with black and white residents of Beloit, Wisconsin, concerning migration of blacks to the city from Kentucky and Mississippi after World War I and their lives before and after the move. Included in the interviews are references to employment and labor problems at Fairbanks-Morse, education, churches, the Women's Community Club, Beloit College, and the local chapter of the NAACP. The 15 interviewees include Sadie Bell, Rubie Bond, David Fifield, Ambrose Gordon, Ben Gordon, Lorenzo Grady, Anne and Neal Harris, Walter Ingram, Robert Irrman, D.W. Abstract: Legislative papers of a conservative Republican assemblyman (1956-1970) from Beloit, Wisconsin. Included are subject and campaign files, microfilmed clipping scrapbooks, constituent correspondence, press releases, and speeches. Chronologically-arranged correspondence touching upon a host of constituent concerns comprises the bulk of the collection. Fragmentary subject files contain statements and notes of the legislator, as well as some background information. The microfilmed scrapbooks contain clippings, advertisements, and literature distributed during his campaigns. Also pertaining to political concerns are files of press releases and speeches.

Included are files on the building of expressways on county park lands, the development of park programs, the reorganization of the commission in the 1950s, and contracts with the Milwaukee Braves baseball team. Other files pertain to the Metropolitan Study Commission; the Marquette University School of Medicine's board of directors and the board of trustees of Milwaukee-Downer College, of which he was a member; the development of Metropolitan War Memorial; the Milwaukee Society for Suppression of Commercial Vice (1914-1922); several World War II relief agencies; and Bender's legal career and his family.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1948-1969, of an editor, writer, and member of the New York Times editorial board, consisting of drafts, notes, research material, and correspondence for books and articles. Magazine articles, chiefly pertaining to politics and education, include manuscripts contributed to Collier's, Life, New Statesman, New York Times Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, Show, Redbook, and Reporter. There are also extensive files on four books: Just Around the Corner: A Highly Selective History of the Thirties (1967), Obstacle Course On Capitol Hill (1964), White House Fever (1960), and The Politics of the Schools (1969). Also present are a script for “Man in the Middle: The State Legislature,” which was aired as an NBC White Paper; a report on the performing arts prepared for the Rockefeller Brothers Fund; and research files for unpublished articles. Abstract: One of a series of tape-recorded oral interviews conducted with Textile Workers Union of America leaders by James A. Cavanaugh of the Historical Society staff, documenting the origins, growth, and decline of the TWUA, internal disputes, relations with other unions, and organizing drives. The interviews document textile unionism prior to the formation of the TWUA, as well as discussing major strikes and gains made through collective bargaining. Abstract: Papers of H.H. Bennett, mainly from 1856 to 1998, a pioneer landscape photographer whose major body of work was created in the Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, together with records of his studio, and papers of various members of his extended family. When the Bennett Studio closed in 1998 to become an historic site owned by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, it was the oldest American photographic studio in continuous operation, having been operated by Bennett and by four generations of the Bennett Family. The papers contain: Bennett's personal and professional papers including correspondence and diaries detailing his service during the Civil War; studio records documenting the studio's portrait and commercials work as well as the museum run by the studio promoting Bennett's legacy and the ownership of Minirama (a model railroad attraction); and family papers.

Abstract: Amateur films, directed and produced by Miriam Bennett and home movies, shot by Miriam Bennett, circa 1930-1965. Most of the films are documentary and contain footage of the Wisconsin Dells region including downtown, the Wisconsin River, and Native American tourist sites; and footage of the Bennett, Crandall, Dyer, and Reese families. Several of the films are fiction films and showcase local "actors" in plays and dramatizations, including A Study in Reds, a film added to the National Film Registry in 2009. Film reels AE 046 through AE 088 and CC 176 have been digitized, compiled, and burned to DVDs (VDA 176-VDA 183) which serve as access copies. The remaining films are only available on film or video. Also included is a documentary on H.H. Bennett (1983) and a Channel 3 news story about Dells tourism (1995).

Abstract: An architectural design firm of La Crosse, Wis., called variously Bentley and Merman, Merman and Skogstad, and Otto Merman Architect. The architects involved were Percy D. Bentley (1885-1968), Otto A. Merman (1890-1935) and Herbert W. Skogstad (d. 1929). Bentley was a La Crosse native who attended the Armour Institute in Chicago. During his brief practice with Merman in La Crosse, the two designed a large number of distinguished Prairie School residences. After Bentley’s departure in 1919, former assistant and partner Otto A. Merman associated with Herbert W. Skogstad from 1922-1929. Skogstad was a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the nature of commissions expanded after this partnership was established to include work for local institutions and businesses as well as residences. Merman continued the practice solo after Skogstad’s death in 1929 until his death in 1935. The microfilmed records are of architectural drawings of buildings designed by these professional associations consist of nearly 300 projects, just over half of which are residential in type. Another quarter of the designs were for commercial buildings, the remaining quarter for public buildings and schools. Most projects were commissioned for locations in La Crosse and other Wisconsin cities with a few in Minnesota and one each in Iowa and Indiana.

The collection is divided into two general sections. Abstract: Papers and photographs of Wilbur C. Berget, a non-commissioned officer who received extensive stateside training and later served with the 12th Armored Division in Europe during World War II before dying tragically in a car accident while awaiting a transfer home. The majority of the collection consists of letters Berget, a Gratiot, Wisconsin native, wrote home to his parents and siblings during the war. The letters are long and very descriptive in chronicling Berget's service from his initial training through the war in Europe and up to a week before his death in December 1945. They are full of observations about military and social activities during the war years and cover major events such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor and subsequent mobilization, the condition of blacks in the segregated South, fighting in Europe, and the liberation of a concentration camp. Also included are Berget's military papers and records relating to his death, burial overseas, and reinterment in Wisconsin. Photographs include three chronological albums that detail his military service.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Paul Bergmann, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., who served as a 1st lieutenant with the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), also known as Merrill's Marauders, during World War II, and also served during the Korean War. The collection includes papers and photographs pertaining to his service in both wars. Manuscripts include correspondence, service records, training materials, souvenirs, and some materials pertaining to Bergmann's veteran activities. Correspondence consists of letters written by Bergmann to his cousin, Bill Seizer, while Bergmann was serving in World War II. The letters cover Bergmann's training, serving as a jungle warfare instructor in Trinidad, his participation as a member of Merrill's Marauders, and his stateside service until the close of the war. The letters discuss Bergmann's daily activities, his desire to hear of news from home, instructions to his cousin to remain a civilian, and some discussion of his combat experiences. Other manuscripts are comprised mainly of military papers that include service records, training materials, certificates, and his service 201 file for both wars. Of interest are souvenirs he sent home to his cousin that include matchbooks, humorous anti-Axis materials, and a notebook Bergmann took from a dead Japanese soldier. Files on social action organizations, 1931-1959, comprise almost the entire collection and relate to groups such as the American-Russian Institute, the Civil Rights Council of Northern California, the Democratic Youth Federation of California, the Rosenberg Foundation, and various other civil rights, civil liberties, political, peace, and anti-fascist organizations. Letters from prominent people in the arts and politics occur throughout. Personal papers, 1929-1958, include correspondence written during a 1933 trip to Russia and clippings and copies of testimony during her two appearances before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1948 and 1949.

Abstract: Papers of a leading motion picture producer associated with RKO during the 1930s and later with MGM. The collection is composed of extensive production files of correspondence, script drafts, reports and logs, and financial information for A Patch of Blue (1965) and two other films Berman produced between 1964 and 1970. Also included are scripts, clippings, and publicity for many of his earlier films. Seven boxes contain notes, correspondence, scripts, and negotiations for unproduced films. The remainder of the collection consists of clippings, miscellaneous personal and business correspondence, financial records, and promotional and biographical information.

Abstract: Collection of photographs and newspaper clippings which document iceboating in and around Madison (Wis.) taken by members of the Bernard family and arranged chronologically by decade. Several photographs depict the boats used in competitions and of the winners holding their trophies as well as images of Bernard’s Boat House which had been on Lake Mendota. Abstract: Papers of Jacqueline Bernard, a New York City resident who was an active supporter of the southern civil rights movement during the 1960s. Included are letters from her son, Joel Bernard, who was a volunteer with COFO in Clay County, Mississippi, and general correspondence, which is mainly from other Clay County civil rights workers, black residents of the county, and northern friends involved in backing the movement. One undated letter gives volunteer Nancy Myron's reaction to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's decision to build a black leadership organization. Miscellany includes press releases, clippings, reports, and minutes and a brochure from a meeting of the Poor People's Corporation.

Abstract: Papers and tape recorded reminiscences of Berquist, a Progressive and Democrat from Oneida County, Wis., reflecting his public career from 1937 to 1986. Papers include the final version of a radio address on old-age pensions delivered in 1938 and two student papers describing a talk by Berquist to a University of Wisconsin political science class in 1939. There are also posters, ads and clippings from his campaigns for state and federal office, including his run for Lieutenant Governor in 1942 and his lively but unsuccessful contest against Alvin E. O'Konski for the 10th Congressional District seat in 1946. A reminiscence recorded in 1986 includes stories about his education and experiences in a lumber camp; a description of a 1943 visit by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Fort Reilly, Kansas; some remarks on his internment in a German P.O.W. camp during World War II; and several expressions of Berquist's faith in government as a means of solving problems. This collection is housed at the Northern Great Lakes Center.

Abstract: Papers, primarily 1966-2006, of Dan Bessie, an educational and narrative filmmaker, who also worked in advertising, theater, and television. Bessie is the author of two memoirs, one on his family and the other on his career in the film industry. The collection includes correspondence, scripts and outlines, production materials, book manuscripts and proofs, storyboards and artwork, photographs, film prints, videos, and audio tapes. Many of the projects involve his father, Alvah Bessie, either as collaborator or as subject.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee attorney primarily concerned with breeding and showing Irish and Fox Terriers. Included are his files of correspondence with other breeders as well as the records he amassed while a member of various dog clubs. A few of the letters to other breeders include references to the fighting between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland during the late 1960s. The collection also includes memorabilia from dog shows he attended, including ribbons, certificates and catalogs. Much of the collection consists of dog show catalogs.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1948 to 1975, of a congregation founded in 1904 as Agudas Achim. In 1949 members of Agudas Achim built a new synagogue, the Beth Israel Center. Included are minutes, correspondence, financial records, printed materials, newsletters, photographs and oral history interviews with former officers of the congregation; Yetta Daitch, Sam Onheiber, Celia Rosenberg, and Adolph and Janet Weinshel. Materials document the center's construction, and the administration, fundraising, philanthropic, and social activities of the congregation, its Talmud Torah, Sisterhood, and Men's Club. A minute book (in Yiddish) documents the administration of the center's predecessor, Agudas Achim, from 1908 to 1920, and is available only on microfilm.

Abstract: Papers primarily composed of religious and political sermons and writings, of a Polish-born Milwaukee priest. Reverend Betlinski's collection also includes biographical information, with a one-page autobiographical journal; correspondence with national political figures concerning the Vietnam War; and correspondence, reports, news clippings, and other materials regarding the Polish-American Information Service, the Polish Roman Catholic Union, the Polish Summer School, and Future Priests' Clubs. Reverend Betlinski served as chaplain and advisor to many Polish groups prior to his retirement. The majority of the collection is composed of his sermons, newspaper articles, term papers, and other texts, primarily in Polish, and dealing with philosophy and the classics, politics, communism, and Poland and the Poles.

Abstract: Documents, notes, and data collected by Maurice Better while investigating the collective bargaining process in preparation for writing his Ph.D. dissertation in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Better specifically studied negotiations between the Gisholt Machine Company (Madison, Wis.) and Local 1404 of the United Steelworkers of America during 1968, a period that included a strike of thirteen weeks duration. Included is his background research which includes information about company-union relations dating back to 1937, economics of the steel industry, and economic conditions in the Madison area. The collection includes correspondence of both the company and the union, agreements, clippings, contract proposals, Local 1404's bylaws, financial data, data on the Gisholt workforce, and minutes and notes of meetings. Of particular interest are Better's extensive field notes collected during his first-hand observation of the bargaining process and his notes concerning the history of specific contract provisions.
