Abstract: Records of the National Committee Against Repressive Legislation (NCARL), a national political organization founded in 1960 as the National Committee to Abolish the House Un-American Activities Committee by Alexander Meiklejohn, Aubrey Williams, and others to work for the abolition of HUAC and other congressional and state investigating committees and to defend civil liberties from repressive legislation. In 1976, the organization was renamed the National Committee Against Repressive Legislation. The collection contains extensive documentation on the case of (executive director Frank) Wilkinson v. FBI, as well as information on NCARL's interaction with other organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF); NCARL's regional offices; and concerned individuals, including Carl and Anne Braden and Robert Drinan.
