Biography/History

The Writers Guild of America, West, a labor union for motion picture, television, and radio writers, was founded in 1954 by the merger of the Screen Writers Guild and the Radio Writers Guild. The union represents its members in collective bargaining and other labor matters and also works for the improvement of copyright legislation and copyright relations between the United States and foreign countries. It is affiliated with the Writers Guild of America, East.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is small and fragmentary and does not provide a good overview of the Guild's activities or the collective bargaining process. Rather it contains a series of agreements which the Guild negotiated on behalf of its members. Most relate to television, both live and film, although some radio and motion picture agreements are also included. A few of the agreements pre-date the 1954 merger and are from the Screen Writers' Guild. The remainder of the collection consists of a constitution, by-laws, and miscellany. The latter file contains a code of working rules and a 1949 radio writers' credit bulletin, which lists some of the programs on which individual writers worked.
