Abstract:
Records of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), a professional organization established in 1948, which included the American Council on Public Relations, the National Association of Public Relations Councils, and the American Public Relations Association. The collection consists primarily of recordings of conferences and seminars and prize-winning entries in the organization's Silver Anvil competition. Competition exhibits, 1954-1985, document the noteworthy public relations activities of many corporations, trade associations, public welfare organizations, educational institutions, communities, and government agencies. Among the most prominent are Bendix Corporation, Boy Scouts of America, Bulova Watch Company, General Electric Company, General Motors Corporation, Kiwanis International, Life, Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, Look, NBC, National Dairy Council, National Safety Council, National Urban League, Parker Pen Company, Schlitz Brewing Company, Standard Oil of Ohio, 3M Company, Time, and Whirlpool Corporation. Also part of the collection are six scrapbooks containing clippings and newsletters about PRSA, 1949-1960; a slide presentation on the organization's accreditation program; a film about public relations sponsored by United Press International; and speeches delivered before the 1963 Public Relations Institute. Various other seminars and conventions which included addresses by Cleveland Amory, Karl A. Menninger, and Edward R. Murrow are present in recorded form, as is a presentation to the U.S. Department of Defense on the importance of a well-informed public.

Biography/History

The Public Relations Society of America was established in 1948 as a result of a merger of the American Council of Public Relations and the National Association of Public Relations Councils. It absorbed the American Public Relations Association in 1961. As a society of professionals in business, industry, counseling firms, trade and professional groups, government, education, and health and welfare organizations, PRSA is today the largest public relations organization in the world, with thousands of members and associates. Its objective is “to advance the profession and the professional.” It maintains a virtual resource center on its website at www.prsa.org; conducts a yearly international conference; oversees a dozen standing committees; recognizes meritorious public relations campaign work in such areas as international relations, education, and government with its annual Silver Anvil Awards competition; and upholds principles of ethics for its members and, more broadly, the public relations profession. The organization publishes Public Relations Journal, a online open access research journal; Public Relations Tactics, a monthly newspaper, and The Public Relations Strategist, a quarterly journal for executive level public relations professionals.

Scope and Content Note

The records consist of entries in the PRSA's annual Silver Anvil Awards competition, 1954-1985, together with a small group of the organization's own records. SILVER ANVIL COMPETITION files consist of both winning and losing entries. With a few exceptions, winning entries are complete. The losers concentrate in the period 1956-1967 and 1971. These selected holdings do appear fragmentary, but are meant to complement existing collections in labor history, mass communications, and other areas of concern to the Society. The winning entries and the 1971 non-winners are filed alphabetically within each year; selected non-winners, 1956-1967, are arranged as a single unit and filed at the end of the 1967 winners. Films included with entries are listed separately at the end of this finding aid.

Each entry varies in depth, in the manner in which it documents its particular public relations program, and in the types of material included. Present may be press releases, photographs, clippings, recordings, and promotional kits. The subjects treated are so varied as to prevent full discussion here. In general, however, the submissions represent public relations activities in business and industry, government, the military, and social welfare organizations. Subjects of the entries range from the parochial and frivolous to a growing reflection of national concerns such as race relations, ecology, the energy crisis, and the Vietnam Conflict.

PRSA RECORDS include several scrapbooks about the organization's activities, 1949-1960, and a selection of material relating to various professional seminars, institutes, and national conferences. With the exception of the planning files for the institutes at the University of Wisconsin, these files consist chiefly of transcripts or recordings of speeches. Also of interest in the miscellaneous records is a taped briefing session delivered to PRSA by the Defense Dept. in 1962 on the duties of the department and the necessity for a well-informed public.
