Abstract:

Records of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union (HERE), Local #257. The local chapter was active in Madison, Wisconsin from 1936 until 1986. The bulk of the materials date 1955-1987, and document the administrative, financial, organizational, and bargaining activities of the organization. The collection also documents the union representation of local businesses (worksites) in the Madison area and union membership.

The collection consists of meeting minutes, administrative correspondence, financial records, pamphlets, publicity, and reports coinciding with an upsurge in organizing during the leadership of David Knipfel and Robert Sweeney in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Also included are Knipfel's research on the Helmsley hotel chain and files on various labor and social action interests. There is documentation concerning worksites represented by the local such as the Concourse (Hilton) Hotel, the Lake Shore Manor Retirement Home, the Loraine Hotel, the Lysistrata Restaurant, the Ovens of Brittany, the Park Hotel, and the Wilson Street East Restaurant, including correspondence, bargaining notes, final and draft contracts, and legal material pertaining to representation and decertification elections conducted by the National Labor Relations Board. Some information pertains to the strike in which Local 257 participated against Wisconsin Canteen Services. Authorization cards and membership and subscription lists document the fluctuating membership of the local.
