Biography/History

The Milwaukee-area chapters of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) included the Milwaukee County Union, and First Milwaukee, Anna Gordon, Lathrop, Lillian Stevens, and Willard chapters; later, the Alice LeFeber (formerly West Allis) chapter was added. All of the chapters were affiliated with the Wisconsin Union of the WCTU. The date of establishment is known only of the Lillian Stevens chapter, November 6, 1914. The work of the chapters included temperance and allied social reform activities, and was carried on through monthly meetings; programs, speakers, and county conventions dealing with alcohol and narcotics; and community and school education work.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of records of the Milwaukee County Union; and the First Milwaukee, Lillian Stevens, and Willard chapters. Milwaukee County records include a few items of correspondence, and the record book of the county corresponding secretary, which contains reports of work done during the year, lists of officers, and records of county correspondence written and sent. The records of the First Milwaukee Chapter are comprised of cash books and scattered treasurer's annual reports, some of which are also to be found in the cash books. The Lillian Stevens Chapter records include correspondence; minute books, with membership lists; officers' reports; and secretary's records, consisting of lists of members and officers, the secretary's expense account, attendance records, minutes of meetings, and treasurer's reports. A single membership list is the only record of the Willard Chapter.
