Abstract:

Materials related to the airports of Racine and Kenosha Counties and air travel in general. Autobiographical information on Mr. Sullivan is also included, as well as biographical materials on over a hundred Wisconsin pilots collected by Mr. Sullivan during his life.

John Sullivan was born in 1917 and grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He developed an interest in aviation when he was a young child. He started flight instruction in 1937 and flew on anti-submarine patrol for the U.S. Navy while stationed in Greenland. After leaving the military in 1945, Sullivan worked at the Kenosha Airport until 1950 and then assumed management of the Racine Airport until 1983.

The collection consists primarily of news clippings and transcriptions collected by Mr. Sullivan, but Sullivan also shot a large number of photographs himself. The biographical materials were actively solicited by Sullivan, and he utilized a standardized form that makes the resulting data fairly uniform.

The files are organized into three main series, Kenosha Airport, Pilot Files, and Racine Airport. Within those major headings, the files are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically.
