Abstract:

The collection documents James Liddy's life as a poet and professor. Liddy was born and raised in Ireland, and after briefly practicing law, he turned to a life of poetry. He moved to San Francisco in 1967 and began teaching poetry and English at various institutions across the U.S. before finally settling down at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1976, where he taught for over 30 years. The collection contains primarily correspondence, literary papers, and general files. Some of his works include: In a Blue Smoke (1964), Baudelaire's Bar Flowers (1975), A White Thought in a White Shade (1987), Collected Poems (1994), and The Doctor’s House (2004).

James Daniel Reeves Liddy was born on July 1, 1934 in Dublin, Ireland and spent most of his early life in Coolgreany, County Wexford. His father, James Liddy, was also born in Ireland and worked as a dispensary doctor. His mother, Clare Liddy (née Reeves), was born to Irish parents in New York. Liddy earned a Master's Degree in English at the National University of Ireland in 1959 and a law degree from King's Inns in 1961.

The publication of Liddy's poetry in The Irish Times in 1959 marked the beginning of a literary career that spanned nearly 50 years. He studied under Irish poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh. His work was influenced by Charles Baudelaire, James Joyce, Jack Spicer, Walt Whitman, W.B. Yeats, and Beat writers such as Jack Kerouac.

Along with Liam O'Connor and Michael Harnett, Liddy launched and edited the short-lived literary magazine Arena in the spring of 1963. The magazine presented the best prose and poetry of young Irish writers, although its also published works of older and non-Irish writers. It ceased publication in 1965 after only four issues. Liddy served as editor with several other publications, most notably The Gorey Detail from 1977 to 1983, which was produced during the Gorey Arts Fest in Ireland, and on titles for the Blue Canary Press, a Milwaukee publication that he also co-founded.

Shortly after Arena ended, Liddy began to travel, first going to Spain. Eventually, he made his way to San Francisco where he got a job teaching English at San Francisco State College in 1967. This was the first in a series of teaching jobs in cities across the United States, including Portland, New York, and New Orleans. He started teaching in the English Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1976.

Throughout his career, Liddy gave countless readings and contributed articles, reviews, and poems to numerous publications. He wrote over 30 books and chapbooks of poetry and prose. Liddy was internationally known and was among the first group that was selected for membership to Asodána, the Irish association of artists. He also won several awards, including the Posner Poetry Award in 1995 from the Council of Wisconsin Writers. Liddy passed away on November 5, 2008 at the age of 74.

Jim Chapson donated the material to the Archives Department in August 2010 (accession 2010-012). Thomas Larscheid donated additional materials in May 2012 (accession 2011-043). Jim Chapson donated additional materials in August 2012 (accession 2012-015). Larry Rafferty donated additional materials in July 2014 (accession 2014-010).

Processing Information

Bob Jaeger processed the collection in the summer of 2011. Molly Whiteside (supervised by Christel Maass) processed accessions 2011-043, 2012-015, and 2014-010 in June 2015 (boxes 36-38). Laura K. N. Jones integrated accession 2020-020 into the collection on April 11th, 2023.

Preservation Information

During processing, preservation masters were created from electronic records originally received on DVDs. They were ripped as .iso files (preservation masters) and transcoded to MP4s (access copies).

	Series: 1. Correspondence, 1927-2009 Scope and Content Note: This series is comprised largely of incoming correspondence, with the bulk of the material dating from 1967, when Liddy moved to the United States, to 2008. It shows his relationships with family and friends, other poets and writers, and former students who became friends, as well as some of the business side of Liddy's work. Liddy used some of the early third-party and family letters for his memoirs. The folders labeled "Unopened and Unsent Letters" contain letters that were either received by Liddy but never opened or written by Liddy and never sent. Sealed envelopes were opened by the archivist during processing. The correspondence is organized by surname, then chronologically. A brief note about the sender or recipient is provided.
