Abstract:
This collection contains records of the A.J. Lindemann & Hoverson Company, a manufacturer of stoves, as well as some personal papers of A.J. Lindemann and his family. The majority of the records date from the mid-1930s through the late 1950s. Earlier items include catalogs from 1888 and 1904. Some of the more interesting items in the collection are the newspaper clippings documenting the company's labor strike which lasted from 1935 to 1937. A number of newspaper clippings and other items also pertain to the company's 1940s wartime production. The collection also includes financial information and materials about the company's organization. The personal papers contain materials pertaining to A. J. Lindemann's estate and also document the 1958 sale of the company. Other personal materials include army and family photographs and a 1942 Army War Show yearbook.

Biography/History

The A.J. Lindemann & Hoverson Company was incorporated in 1890. The company, however, dates back to 1875 when Albert J. Lindemann and his father John P. Lindemann established a tinner's shop and hardware store under the name of J. P. Lindemann and Son. Following the incorporation of the A.J. Lindemann & Hoverson Company, A.J. Lindemann served as the company's president and H. C. Hoverson served as secretary for a few years. The company initially manufactured roasting pans, stove pipe, and coal or wood stoves. As the company grew, other products included gas ranges and heaters, oil and gasoline stoves, portable ovens and oil stove wicks, electric ranges, electric water heaters, kerosene stoves and ranges, and refrigerators and home freezers. In 1939, Eugene A. Lindemann took over as president of the company. During the World War II years the company almost completely converted to wartime production. The company was sold in 1958 to Chilton Metal Products, Inc. of Chilton, Wisconsin, and Otto A. Boheim, a Milwaukee industrialist.
