Series: ALAN GUSKIN Biographical NoteAlan E. Guskin was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 22, 1937. He earned a B.A. with Honors at Brooklyn College in 1958 and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1968. Dr. Guskin worked for the Peace Corps as a selection officer and an instructor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand between 1961-1964. Between 1964-1965, he worked as the director for VISTA'S Division of Selection. Next Guskin was the director of the Florida Migrant Program during 1965-1966. While at the University of Michigan during 1968-1971, he held several different positions including project director and acting assistant director for the Center for Research on Utilization of Scientific Knowledge; project director for the Educational Change Team in the School of Education; and associate professor. In 1971, he joined Clark University as associate professor, assumed responsibilities as Provost for 1971-1973, and became acting president for 1973-1974 before returning to become a full time faculty member. In September 1975, he became Chancellor at UW-Parkside. He was a member of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and American Educational Research Association, served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and was also a member of the Advisory Committee for Resource Center for Planned Change with the same organization. During his tenure as Chancellor, the university became increasingly community oriented by offering cultural and athletic activities to the public; providing special borrowing privileges in the library; and encouraging older adults to return to the university on either a full- or part-time basis. The Collegiate Skills Program, pre-collegiate Minority Student Program (CHAMP), the
teaching library, and graduate programs were all developed between 1975 to 1981. He left Parkside in 1985 to become president of Antioch University in Ohio.
