Part 1 (McCormick Mss 1A): Correspondence, 1788-193970.0 c.f. (125 archives boxes and 50 card boxes) This series, covering the years 1788 through 1939, comprises the main section of the Cyrus H. McCormick papers. The correspondence is largely letters, reports, telegrams, statements and memoranda received by Cyrus H. McCormick, his wife Nettie Fowler, their son Cyrus H. McCormick Jr., and persons associated with the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. There are also letters written by Robert McCormick, Cyrus H. McCormick, and his family, consisting of original manuscripts (handwritten and typescript) and typescript copies. The subjects covered are multiple with an emphasis on the development of the reaper, the growth of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, Presbyterian Church activities, and politics. Letters are filed chronologically by years and alphabetically by name of author within the chronology. Each item is cataloged in the main catalogue of the Cyrus H. McCormick papers under the name of the author. A good portion is also cross-referenced by name of the recipient. The content of each box is listed according to the title of the first and the last folder in the box.
