Scope and Content Note

The records are organized in twelve series: PUBLICATIONS, BACKGROUND, HISTORY, BOARD OF DIRECTORS, CONVENTIONS, CONTINUING STUDIES COMMITTEE, COMMITTEES, JOURNALISM STUDIES COMMITTEES, INDIVIDUALS' CORRESPONDENCE, AWARDS AND CITATIONS, MISCELLANY, and ASSOCIATED PRESS PUBLICATIONS.

Most of the collection dates between 1955 and 1980. The earliest material in the collection is a convention program book from 1935. Much of the other pre-1955 material is also convention-related publications or copies of the annual Blue Book and Red Book.

The records in this collection were assembled from many separate accessions submitted by various members of APME after the organization decided to create a repository for their records in 1969. Because the papers were donated by members that had varying levels of involvement in APME and were active for varying amounts of time, many of the series are fragmented and do not completely cover any one aspect of the organization though nearly all aspects of the association's activities are represented to some degree. It was typical for an editor to initially work on different Continuing Study committees for a few years before becoming vice chairman or chairman of a committee. For many of the members included in this collection the next step often was to become General Vice Chairman and then General Chairman of the Continuing Study Committee. Many General Chairmen then moved on to fill year-long terms as Secretary, then Vice President, and eventually President. The outgoing Presidents remained on the APME Executive Committee for one more year, holding the title Immediate Past President. Because of this typical progression through the various levels of the organization the collection presents a broad cross-section of the organization's activities and illustrates the careers of several prominent APME members, highlighting their contributions.

The PUBLICATIONS series is made up of the three main publications of APME: the Blue Book, the Red Book, and the APME News. The Blue and Red books were published annually and served as a record of the events of each year's convention. The Blue Book was eventually phased out in 1958 and replaced by the Red Book, which continued to feature coverage of the events of the annual conventions as well as condensed versions of the Continuing Studies reports. The APME News was started in 1964 as a newsletter update of APME happenings and research committee progress. In the 1980s it switched to a magazine-style format and was published quarterly. This series also features correspondence related to each publication.

The BACKGROUND series features the officers' papers and other material that provides a general overview of APME's purpose and mission as well as papers generated through the general function of the organization including materials related to finances and membership. This series also highlights the development of APME's code of ethics, by-laws, and official Guidelines. The papers dealing with the development of the Guidelines are interesting in that they document the controversy generated when a group of female editors and writers found the initial Guidelines publication to be sexist and demeaning to women working in the field. This series also features a small amount of material about the APME Regents, an advisory and social organization formed by and for former APME executives and other prominent members.

The HISTORY files consist solely of W.F. Cento's research files and manuscript drafts created in the course of his assembling his history of APME's first fifty years. The series includes drafts of the text and copies of correspondence with former presidents and other members that shared information and anecdotes about the association. A copy of the resulting book is included in this series.

The BOARD OF DIRECTORS series is made up of minutes and other materials from the meetings of APME's governing body. The leadership of APME, which included the Continuing Studies Committee Vice Chairman and Chairman, the Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, President, and an AP representative, met twice a year to plan the annual convention and to generally assess the direction and accomplishments of the organization. Also included in this series are materials related to the nomination of candidates for the executive positions.

The CONVENTION series consists of convention publications such as the programs, the more recent Gazette convention newspaper, as well as other event material. Nearly all of the conventions from 1958 through the 1980s are represented in the records though some, such as the records of the 1970 Honolulu convention, provide a much more complete picture of the event than others. Included in this series is correspondence related to convention planning, the general configuration of convention programs, and the selection of guest speakers. In addition to the APME president's address the conventions often featured politicians, scholars, and celebrities who either addressed the general assembly or took part in panel discussions on timely topics. Some of the speakers included Nelson Rockefeller, Robert Kennedy, Ladybird Johnson, Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. Much of each year's convention activity was also summarized in the Red Book for that particular year.

The CONTINUING STUDIES COMMITTEE (CS Committee) series consists mostly of correspondence to and from the General Chairman and General Vice Chairman. The CS Committee oversaw the direction APME research took each year, managed committee membership, and kept the committees on task by overseeing ipondence to and from the General Chairman and General Vice Chairman. The CS Committee oversaw the direction APME research took each year, managed committee membership, and kept the committees on task by overseeing interim reports. They also assessed the success of committees by compiling report cards grading members' participation. In addition to the correspondence, the series also includes committee lists and rosters and some miscellaneous reports.

Operating under the Continuing Studies Committee were the various COMMITTEES whose records make up the majority of the collection. The range of material for each committee varies greatly because some studies were conducted year after year while some were only conducted once. The consistency of the information in this series also varies because some APME members were more active in the research studies than others. The files contain correspondence, study questionnaires, and the resulting reports. While many of these reports were fully or partially reprinted in the Red Books many of the committees also created and distributed intermediate reports or newsletters documenting their progress. Some noteworthy committees in this series include the Freedom of Information committee and the large amount of records created during the 1970s and APME's various examinations of racial issues such as the General News committee's 1968 “In Black and White” project, the 1969 Black News committee's look at black journalists and how to increase their numbers in general and among the APME membership. Committees often gathered large amounts of raw data by taking surveys of member newspapers and editors. Some of these survey responses found in this series include the Color committee's 1958-59 investigation of the first use of color in newspapers and the Journalism Education committee's 1977 study on university training of new journalists. The 1974 Professional Standards committee also conducted a exhaustive poll of editors on the subject of newsroom ethics. Some of the committees in this series also reflect APME's desire to stay ahead of the curve and to brace for changes in reader habits and technology. Examples of this are the Forecast Committee in 1974 and the Newspapers in the Year 2000 committee, created in 1989.

The JOURNALISM STUDIES COMMITTEES replaced the Continuing Studies committees in the early 1990s. This series has very little material in it other than compilations of the final reports created by each committee. These report packets were distributed at the annual conventions.

The INDIVIDUALS' CORRESPONDENCE series consists of correspondence written by various officers and members of APME, the bulk of which concerns general APME business and does not directly pertain to a particular committee or to executive business.

The APME awarded members and member newspapers for journalism excellence. The AWARDS AND CITATIONS series contains lists of award recipients, criteria and guidelines for award eligibility, and correspondence related to the establishment of the various awards that APME has given out over the years.

The MISCELLANY series features correspondence, publications, and other papers that are unconnected to any particular committee or other series.

The records also include an assortment of ASSOCIATED PRESS PUBLICATIONS which were received as part of the various accessions.

Part 4 (M2010-033): Additions, 1949-1983
Physical Description: 2.0 cubic feet (2 records center cartons) and 3 photographs and 15 color negatives (1 archives box)
Scope and Content Note: Additions, 1949-1983, consisting of the files of Ted Durein, managing editor of the Peninsula Herald (Monterey, California), documenting his activities in APME. The files consist principally of correspondence between Durein and other APME members relating to committee organization and data collection, inquiries about different color processes, and exchanges about upcoming conventions. His extensive knowledge of color print in newspapers, as well as a strong interest in the technological advancements of the craft, led him to head many projects, committees, and presentations in and outside of APME. Also included in this collection are a number of speeches given by Durein at various conventions, pamphlets and other information for these conventions, APME affiliated newsletters, surveys, and assorted other APME materials.
