Scope and Content Note: The films (print and pre-print) and videos are primarily works done under the auspices of the Department of Agricultural Journalism by Fritz Albert and others, including Wolfgang Hoffman and David Hestad. There is also a series of USDA and UW Extension partnership films related to various agricultural topics, and there are 15 documentary-research films on Bolivia, Colombia, and Chile produced by Albert (during 1963 and 1965 while on leave from UW) for the Wisconsin Land Tenure Center. The films document agricultural practices and production in Wisconsin and internationally; environmental issues such as water quality and pollution; community development and planning; dairy and meat science; and land use and policy. All accessions with film have been combined under this call number. All viewing prints and video user copies have been assigned individual call numbers.

The film examines how the increase in tourism and the decline in the fishing industry, lumbering, and farming are changing Bayfield. Footage includes views of a Bayfield restaurant, gift shops, art galleries, camping, swimming, an aerial view, the architecture, and landscape (city and water).

Film discusses the history of corn cultivation. In the “past,” a horse and cart were used, weed removal and corn picking (husking) was done by hand, and growing a corn crop involved 14 steps. In the “present,” machines and fertilizers are used (12 steps). In the “future,” corn cultivation will continue to change (6 steps).

Note: The Land Tenure Center was organized on May 11, 1962 when the University of Wisconsin signed an initial three year contract with the Agency for International Development. The Land Tenure Center conducted research projects in several Latin American countries including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The research focused on land ownership patterns and institutional structures.

Scope and Content Note: Transparencies, photographs, and negatives, 1939-1999, documenting aspects of Wisconsin farming (including the Kretzschmar dairy farm), landscapes, urban spaces, land use, people, and pollution; some of these photographs are attributed to Jim Larison. Also included are images from the Wisconsin Folklife Festival with visitors from Hessen, Germany; images of landscapes and farming practices in Indonesia, Gambia, South America, and the Western United States and Hawaii; images of Europe and Germany including the Berlin Wall and war related images; images documenting Native American poverty in Wisconsin, circa 1965-1968, including the Chippewa (Ojibwe) and Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) tribes; and exhibit boards from the “Land and the People: Fritz Albert Photographs.” Lastly, included are correspondence and greeting cards in German and English to Fritz Albert and newspaper clippings and background information.
