Biography/History

Twin-Disc Inc. designs, manufactures, and supplies the highly sophisticated components that transmit and control developed power from the engine of a vehicle, machine, or boat to the wheels, tracks, or propellers that make it run. Founded in 1918, Twin-Disc remains an important part of Racine, Wisconsin and moving machinery worldwide. This collection largely covers the period of President John Batten and Twin-Disc’s significant growth in the 1960s and 1970s into the strong corporation it has become today.

Scope and Content Note

Although this collection contains records from 1918-1989, the bulk of the records range only from 1949-1989. Amongst this collection is a series of annual reports for Twin-Disc. These annual reports are from 1949, 1951, 1953-1955, and 1964-1989. A photocopy of the company’s original articles of association with the State of Wisconsin from 1919 is also included in this collection. Two employee manuals and an interview with Vice President of Finance Robert T. Howell are also included.

Research conducted by Twin-Disc has been broken up into four sections and discussed more fully in the Arrangement section of this finding aid. Newspaper clippings from the Racine Journal Times about Twin-Disc are also included.

The clippings span 1971-1974 and 1978-1981. Issues of Production Road, Twin-Disc's corporate magazine, are included but are incomplete, containing complete collections for volumes 34-40, but scattered issues from volumes 31, 32, 33, and 41. In whole, there are issues from 1962-1963, and 1970-1981, but is incomplete.

The largest portion of the collection consists of numerous service manuals for Twin-Disc machinery assembly and repair. For more about these service manuals, see Arrangement.

Arrangement of the Materials

The files are organized alphabetically by content and subject, then chronologically, except for the miscellaneous research files, which are organized specifically by their publishers, and then arranged chronologically, and the service manuals, which are arranged by their service manual (SM) numbers.
