Abstract:
Miscellaneous papers of a noted Milwaukee, Wisconsin playwright and actor. The collection includes drafts, scripts, news clippings, and publicity materials for Shue's plays, poems, and writings, including The Foreigner, Grandma Duck is Dead, The Nerd, and Wenceslas Square. Includes an extensive number of Shue's letters to and from colleagues and friends concerning personal matters and their careers, heavily annotated scripts of productions in which Shue acted, and Shue's score for My Emperor's Clothes. Of particular interest are Shue's diaries, dating from 1958 to 1985. Paintings and drawings, done by Shue or by his friends and family for him, are included. Also included is the Chicago Report, a family newsletter written by Shue's father, providing details on the family's activities, careers, and travels especially to the Far East. The collection contains a recording of the memorial service at the Todd Wehr Theater following Shue's September 1985 death in a plane crash. A book of tribute put together by Shue's family, as well as letters to the family after Shue's death, are included in the collection.

Biography/History

Larry Shue was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 23, 1946. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1968. After duty in the U.S. Army (1969-1972), Shue acted in dinner theaters before being invited to join the Milwaukee Repertory Theater (MRT) in 1977. He was a playwright-in-residence at the MRT between 1977-1985. Shue died in a plane crash in Weyers Cove, Virginia on September 23, 1985. Shue authored several plays, including The Foreigner, Grandma Duck is Dead, My Emperor's New Clothes, The Nerd, and Wenceslas Square. The Nerd was Shue's best known work. Additional biographical information can be found in box 1, folder 2.

On July 10, 1997, Percy and Dolores Shue donated additional materials to the collection (accession 1997-003). Kristine Thatcher donated additional materials in January 2008 (accession 2007-032).

Processing Information

Mark A. Vargas processed accession 1994-029 at the Archives in June-August 1995. The original condition of the collection was very poor. Most of the items were badly disorganized, and largely piled into boxes without any sort of file arrangement or dating. The collection was arranged as much as possible by the name of Shue's works. Michele Christian processed accession 1997-003 (boxes 6-8) in August 1997. Leslie Heinrichs reprocessed the first accession in January-April 2000. Dan Vinson, supervised by Christel Maass, processed accession 2007-032 (boxes 9-10) in April 2008.

In October 2011, Bob Jaeger removed 57 safety film negatives and placed them with other safety film negatives.
