Abstract:
REPLACE with 520 Papers of Kirk Douglas, a prominent actor-producer who worked in motion pictures, television, theater, and radio. While the collection illustrates some aspects of Douglas's personal life, the primary emphasis is on his career as an actor, and as a producer and founder of Bryna Productions and other production companies. The papers document the collaborative effort of filmmaking; the work of writers, directors, producers, and actors; and the details of technical production, financing, promotion, and distribution of films. Includes correspondence, financial records, technical production files, promotion and publicity files, distribution planning papers and records of gross receipts, scripts and screenplays, and news clippings. Documentation is most extensive for those motion pictures produced by Bryna Productions in which Douglas starred. A collection addition from 2021 supplements the material on Kirk Douglas's work in film, television, and theater, and it also documents the books he wrote, his philanthropic work, and many of his public appearances and speeches.

Biography/History

A first-generation American, Kirk Douglas was born Issur Danielovitch on 9 December 1916, in Amsterdam, New York. His parents, Russian born Jews immigrated to the United States in 1910, were Herschel "Harry" Danielovitch and Bryna "Bertha" Danielovitch (née Sanglel). The family, which consisted of six daughters and one son, found it financially difficult to survive during the Depression years. Young Issur "Izzy" (or Isadore Demsky, as he was later called) worked his way through school selling newspapers and a variety of other items. The last name Demsky was adopted from an uncle who immigrated to the United States earlier.

Kirk Douglas first became interested in drama when he attended Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam. Encouraged by his teacher, Louise Livingston, he participated in various kinds of dramatic and oratorical activities. In 1935 he graduated from high school, eager to attend college, for which he first had to earn the tuition money. From 1935 to 1939 he attended St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, where he won recognition as president of the student body, the Mummers dramatic society, and the National Student Federation of America; he was, in addition, an intercollegiate wrestling champion.

Like other aspiring actors, Douglas chose to pursue his profession in New York City. In 1941 he won a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He supported himself by living in the Greenwich Village Settlement House, waiting on tables at Schrafft's, teaching dramatics to children, and doing odd jobs. It was during his year at the American Academy that he chose his stage name. Douglas made his Broadway debut in 1941 as a singing telegraph boy in Spring Again. The advent of World War II provided him with a new career in the United States Navy. Douglas attended Midshipman School at Notre Dame University and was subsequently commissioned as an ensign. He served with an anti-submarine patrol in the Pacific until he received a medical discharge following injuries in 1944. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant (junior grade).

Kirk Douglas got his first "break" soon after his return to civilian life, when he was chosen to replace Richard Widmark as the juvenile lead in Kiss and Tell. He also worked as an actor in radio soap operas, and in four other plays: Trio (1944), Star in the Window,Alice in Arms (1945), and The Wind Is Ninety (1945). The latter play won Douglas both critical acclaim and the attention of Hollywood. Lauren Bacall, one of Douglas's fellow students at the Academy, recommended Douglas to producer Hal Wallis, and his screen test was so successful that he won the lead opposite Barbara Stanwyck in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946). Douglas quickly established himself in motion pictures, earning roles in Out of the Past (1947), Mourning Becomes Electra (1947), The Walls of Jericho (1948), My Dear Secretary (1948), and A Letter to Three Wives (1948). In 1948 Douglas was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Champion, a film about an ambitious and ruthless prize fighter. With this picture, Douglas's image as a "tough rogue" was established.

Douglas was nominated for an Oscar again in 1952 for The Bad and the Beautiful and in 1956 for Lust for Life, for which he also won the New York Critics Award. Other outstanding films during these years included The Glass Menagerie (1950), Detective Story (1951), The Big Sky (1952), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), and Man Without a Star (1955).

Having made his mark as a successful actor, Douglas turned his attention toward the production of films, and in 1955 he formed an independent film company, Bryna Productions. Douglas appeared in several Bryna's motion pictures: The Indian Fighter (1955), Paths of Glory (1957), The Vikings (1958), Spartacus (1960), The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), Seven Days in May (1964), A Gun Fight (1971), The Light at the Edge of the World (1971), Scalawag (1973), and Posse (1975). Leading roles in numerous other films also kept the filmmaker busy; among them were Ulysses (1955), Top Secret Affair (1957), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), The Last Train from Gun Hill (1959), The Last Sunset (1961), Town Without Pity (1961), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), For Love or Money (1963), In Harm's Way (1965), The Heroes of Telemark (1965), Cast a Giant Shadow (1966), The Way West (1967), A Lovely Way to Die (1968), and The Arrangement (1969). The Bryna television series, Tales of the Vikings, was an outgrowth of its film, The Vikings.

Kirk Douglas traveled widely because of both his work and his personal interests. On behalf of the State Department and the USIA (United States Information Agency) he toured South America in 1963, the Far East in 1964, Europe and the Middle East in 1965, and Eastern Europe in 1966. For his efforts he was lauded by Presidents John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and by the United States Congress. In 1967 he served as Public Affairs Director of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

These varied facets of Douglas's life earned recognition both in his own industry and beyond. In 1958 his alma mater, St. Lawrence University, awarded him a Doctor of Fine Arts degree. In 1968 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented him the DeMille Award for his contributions to the international motion picture industry, and the Thomas A. Dooley Foundation gave him its Splendid American Award. Douglas also wrote novels and memoirs. His books include Ragman's Son, Dance with the Devil, The Gift, My Stroke of Luck, Let's Face It: 90 Years of Living, Loving, and Learning, and I Am Spartacus!: Making a Film, Breaking the Blacklist.

Kirk Douglas was married to Anne Buydens; they had two sons, Peter (who worked for Bryna Productions) and Eric. By his first marriage to Diana Dill, he had two sons, Michael, an actor-producer, and Joel, also a producer. Kirk Douglas died on February 5, 2020.

Physical Description: 59.8 cubic feet (8 archives boxes, 55 record center cartons, and 4 flat boxes)
Scope and Content Note

The papers of Kirk Douglas have been arranged in seven series: Correspondence and Personal Papers, Financial and Business Records, Motion Pictures - Produced, Motion Pictures - Unproduced, Television, Theater, and Radio. The collection illustrates some aspects of Douglas's personal life but is primarily concerned with his career as an actor and producer. Douglas himself has pointed out that his papers demonstrate the collaborative effort of filmmaking; the collection illustrates the parts writers, directors, producers, and actors play in putting a film together. In addition, the collection contains a few records of production and acting work of Michael Douglas, usually in conjunction with Bryna Productions.

CORRESPONDENCE AND PERSONAL PAPERS consist of general business letters from 1948 to 1978, with some personal letters and fan mail included. There are a few files concerning individuals with whom Douglas worked, a folder concerning his son Joel, and a folder of Kirk Douglas biographical materials. Further information regarding Douglas and his career may be found in The Films of Kirk Douglas, a draft book manuscript by Tony Thomas, written about 1971. In his book, Thomas presents brief critical synopses of Douglas's films, with cast and staff lists. The remainder of the series includes programs and other papers from dinners, awards celebrations, and dedications attended by Kirk Douglas. (Correspondence relating to a particular production can be found in the other series in the collection, filed under the title of the production.)

The second series in the collection, FINANCIAL AND BUSINESS RECORDS, includes some personal information relating to Kirk and Anne Douglas, but the bulk of the material pertains to Bryna Productions. There are balance sheets, payroll reports, reports of employment contracts, and information regarding literary properties. Much of the material dates from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. There are also folders regarding Joel Productions and Peter Vincent Music Corporation, separate companies formed by Kirk Douglas.

The major portion of the Kirk Douglas papers has been organized into the two series MOTION PICTURES - PRODUCED and MOTION PICTURES - UNPRODUCED. Materials have been grouped by production title, and each production organized chronologically by release date, or if unproduced, by date of creation of the records. Within each title materials have been grouped alphabetically by type of record. Both films in which Douglas acted (only), and which he also produced, are documented in these series. Within the Motion Pictures - Unproduced files are several folders containing only scripts, which appear to have been sent to Douglas for his consideration for production; often it is difficult to determine how and from whom these materials were acquired by Douglas.

For Douglas's early films--when he functioned independently, under contract to no major studio--there is often only a script present. Beginning with Act of Love (1953) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), however, the documentation is more comprehensive and usually includes correspondence, employment contracts, and financial records, as well as scripts. Films produced by Bryna Productions are especially well represented, with additional files of financial information, technical production papers, promotion and distribution records, and news clippings of reviews, also included. For many of Douglas's and Bryna Productions' later films, distribution information and financial reports are fragmentary. There are also smaller files regarding motion pictures Douglas did not star in, but in which Stan Margulies, his publicity chief, or Edward Lewis, his producer, participated: Thunder Road, Ride Out for Revenge, Grand Prix, Hawaii, and The Gypsy Moths.

Indian Fighter (1955) is the first of the Bryna films; others which are well documented are Spring Reunion (1957), The Careless Years (1957), Lizzie (1957), The Vikings (1958), Spartacus (1960), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), Seven Days in May (Joel Productions, 1964), Summertree (1971), Scalawag (1973), and Posse (1975). Other noteworthy films include Paths of Glory, which shows the early genius of director Stanley Kubrick; The Vikings and Posse, which detail the work of Douglas as leading man and producer in two of Bryna Productions' most successful films; and Spartacus, with extensive documentation showing all these facets, as well as Douglas's breaking of the blacklist when he hired Dalton Trumbo to write the screenplay. The records of Scalawag also illustrate the recent shift of film companies to foreign countries for location filming; in this case there are several files concerning Bryna Productions' cooperation with Italian and Yugoslav personnel and film organizations.

In addition to motion pictures, Bryna was also involved in TELEVISION production. Three of Bryna's motion pictures were planned for production as television specials or series, Tales of the Vikings (from The Vikings), Indian Fighter, and Spartacus, although the latter two never were produced. For these series documentation includes correspondence, financial records, production and promotional files, and scripts for specific episodes. Other files in this series pertain to Douglas's appearances on television interview shows, and specials; made-for-television movies, and more recently, television mini-series. Similar types of records are available for these shows, which span the period 1950 to 1976, although some files are incomplete. Among the more recent productions represented is The Moneychangers (1976).

The series concerning THEATER and RADIO primarily contain scripts from performances by Kirk Douglas. The Radio files date from the late 1940s and include scripts of adaptations of two of Douglas's films, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and The Champion. Among the Theater files are also scripts and correspondence regarding plays perhaps considered for production as motion pictures. Of interest in this series are the records of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in which Kirk Douglas starred on Broadway in 1963-1964, and which was later produced by his son, Michael Douglas. Partial records of both productions are present in the Theater series.

Scope and Content Note

This addition to the Kirk Douglas papers has been arranged in eight series: Correspondence and personal papers; Financial and business records; Publicity, speeches, and awards; Motion pictures; Television; Theater; Writing; and Miscellaneous. Folder titles provided by the donor have been maintained, with the addition of some clarification and dates.

CORRESPONDENCE AND PERSONAL PAPERS are arranged by date (for personal correspondence) or by topic for the rest of the papers. The correspondence in this series relates to Kirk Douglas's family, friends, and charity work, and personal papers include notes, phone lists, and phone sheets.

FINANCIAL AND BUSINESS RECORDS consist of business correspondence and other documents including contracts and invoices. The business correspondence is arranged chronologically and the other papers in the series are arranged by organization or individual.

The PUBLICITY, SPEECHES, AND AWARDS series is divided into four sub-series: Events and organizations, Speeches, Public Relations (PR) correspondence, and Miscellaneous. The materials in this series mostly relate to Kirk Douglas's public appearances, often related to charity work or awards, rather than publicity for specific film, television, theater, or writing projects. The Events and organizations sub-series include correspondence, programs, and speeches, arranged by topic. The Speeches sub-series consists of text for various speeches made by Douglas, compiled by date. The PR correspondence sub-series is arranged by name or firm for PR professionals who worked with Douglas, and the Miscellaneous sub-series consists of other publicity files.

The MOTION PICTURES, TELEVISION, and THEATER series are each divided into three sub-series: Produced, Unproduced, and Other. These series are arranged by project. In each series, the Produced sub-series includes materials related to completed projects involving Kirk Douglas, Bryna Productions, or other Douglas family members. The Unproduced sub-series relate to projects that Douglas or Bryna worked on but never released and unproduced scripts without documentation. The Other sub-series contain materials for projects that were completed, but seemingly without the involvement of Douglas or Bryna Productions.

The WRITING series is arranged in three sub-series: Books, Blogs, and Unpublished. The Books sub-series documents Kirk Douglas's published novels and memoirs predominantly through drafts, with some records of book tours and other publicity. It is arranged by project or topic. The Blogs sub-series includes Douglas's writing from Huffington Post and MySpace. The Unpublished sub-series is arranged by project for books that were not released.

MISCELLANEOUS contains additional materials unrelated to the other series. Most of the materials are clippings.

This addition also includes one records center carton of unprocessed audiovisual materials.
