50 Bonus Pieces
4060 Pieces of Chewed Gum
in Plexiglass cube
12x12x12"
Remember the game that involves guessing an amount of candies, pennies, or beans in a jar? Most participants severely underestimate the actual quantity. Similarly in art, it is important to understand units within a space. We chose a unit to help us measure the space inside of a cubic foot: bubble gum. Giving ourselves three days, 50 dollors, and a strict set of chewing rules we naively began our own game. After 75 dollars spent on 4060 pieces of gum, bloodied tongues and cheeks, and 18 mugs of excess magenta saliva, we still had a third of the cube to fill. We stopped chewing. We now better understand space, but ironically, only in terms of chewed gum.
