Records of a River Falls, Wisconsin organization in existence from 1973 to 1978 which provided information, referral, and follow-up services to individuals in order that they more easily located social service agencies able to serve their needs. The materials include annual reports, correspondence, publicity, information on work procedures including sample questions, some financial records, and fragmentary records of related agencies. Absent from the records are the agency logs of incoming questions which were destroyed when the organization dissolved in 1978. Other materials at that time were transferred to the Elders' Area Resources Service, River Falls, Wisconsin.
Biography/HistoryThe Information and Referral Service for Pierce and St. Croix Counties, Inc. River Falls, Wisconsin, was formed as a private, non-profit organization in 1972 and began its operation in April 1973. Its stated purpose was to "develop and operate a comprehensive, centralized information, referral and follow-up service to effectively, efficiently, accurately and promptly provide for the linkage of people with needs to agencies with appropriate services." Manuals and publications produced by other agencies were used by the staff of volunteers, under program coordinator Kay Abbott, to develop policies and resource files. The service continued for five years until, in September 1978, it was dissolved due to a lack of funding and inadequate volunteer support. Elements of the service were then provided by the Elders' Area Resources Service, River Falls, Wisconsin. Collection Scope and Content NoteThe Information and Referral Service for Pierce and St. Croix Counties Records consist of two series: ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS and RECORDS OF RELATED AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS. The collection is incomplete as agency logs were destroyed in accordance with federal law when the organization dissolved, and other materials were transferred to the successor organization, Elders' Area Resources Service, River Falls, Wisconsin. The series ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS (1972-1978) consists of early planning records, articles of incorporation, annual reports, correspondence, written work procedures, copies of publicity and financial records. The material provides good documentation of the initial organization and work procedures of the service. In addition, the annual reports summarize the activity of the service on a yearly basis. The series RECORDS OF RELATED AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS (1977-1978) consists of by-laws, meeting minutes, brochures, and surveys of other organizations. Most of these organizations were umbrella agencies of which the Information and Referral Service for Pierce and St. Croix Counties, Inc. was a member. Others were agencies providing similar services in different locales. Also, there is information on Elders' Area Resources Service, which succeeded the Information and Referral Service for Pierce and St. Croix Counties, Inc. in 1978.
