SAUKV I LLE The town of Saukville was set off and made an independent zation on April 4., 1848. Prior to that time it formed a part o Washington. Settlements were made as early as 1845, and improv began in 1846. The first traces of civilization on the present the village appeared in the latter year. It was unusual in tha laid out in the shape of a triangle with stores, hotels and dwe built around its perimeter. It was a town for wayfarers and, f size, had more inns and hotels than any other commun ty in the The first house in the village was built by George Daniels He was among the first to settle in this area. Other early set Lott Blanchard, Joseph Fischbein, William Foster, E. Wadsworth, Sizer, Stephen McIntosh, Jonathan Tibbetts, Joseph Fowler, and 1 Payne.. In 188 William Payne built the first hotel, christened "Pulaski Hotels and the first landlord was William Richards; b- forever after known as Payne's Place. It was the halfway house Bay to Milwaukee travelers. It was a tavern, grocery store, an hall. Originally it had a large veranda across the front, 18 r the large dance hall occupying the third floor. John Keller bo- in 1863 and operated it as a grocery store. When his daughter I married Peter Mueller in 1891, they operated the tavern instead and the building was still used as an inn.
