WISCONSIN BLUE BOOK
Walton League, Conservation Department, Highway Department,
and Department of Public Instruction.
  The 1961 state Legislature provided that $1,500 be allocated
annually from the state highway appropriation for promoting the
objectives of this committee, Chapter 539, Laws 1961.
               Northern Great Lakes Area Council
Members: GOVERNOR GAYLORD A. NELSON, chairman; GLEN R. DOUGLAS,
    ARLIE M. MuCos, JR., JACK OLSON, HARRY THOMA, JAMES WIMMER,
    ANTHONY WISE.
  Following the 1945 Governors' Conference at Mackinac Island,
the Governor of Michigan requested a meeting with the Governors
of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the Province of Ontario to consider
an intergovernmental organization for co-operatively publicizing
this area in the noncompetitive aspects of recreation. In September,
1945, the Governors met and organized the Northern Great Lakes
Area Council. The council has received appropriations from mem-
ber states since 1946. The council meets 2 or 3 times a year and
each state is represented by its Governor and 6 other representatives.

  The Governor appointed this 9-member committee, May 19, 1960,
to advise on state-wide planning. Consisting of professional plan-
ning experts, the committee is directed to help develop a compre-
hensive state planning program.

  The Governor appointed this committee October, 1959 for the
purpose of co-ordinating and planning Wisconsin's official partici-
pation in the observance of United Nations' Day, October 23. The
committee supports activities which promote the United Nations
as an instrument for world peace.
