Encoding Description | |
|
The intent of the project is to produce a searchable full-text database of the contents of the Wisconsin Academy Review to be made available for public access through the Internet. A pilot phase was initiated in 2000 to provide access to volumes spanning the years 1990 to 2000 in electronic text format; half of this material (1996-2000) was completed and made available in the summer of 2001, but work on the remaining half stalled. In 2003, as the cost of full text markup was deemed prohibitive, it was decided to make the full backrun prior to 1990 available as electronic facsimiles. Finally, in 2005, work was completed on the gap years of 1990-1995, and the electronic text was brought together with the electronic facsimile content within a single interface. TEI encoding is based on the UW-Madison Libraries' Guidelines for Markup of Electronic Texts at the reading level (Nov. 16, 2005: Version 2.0. http://www.library.wisc.edu/help/tech/TEI/guidelines2.0.html) No normalization has been made to the source text. A limited number of corrections to the source text have been incorporated, with appropriate tagging, at the request of the Wisconsin Academy. Not every file contains such corrections. End-of-line hyphens have been eliminated, except for words normally containing a hyphen at that point. Quotation and all other punctuation marks have been retained in the transcription. No segmentation or interpretation is provided with the text. Mailing information from the covers has not been retained. Sections which are continued across non-contiguous pages within an issue have been recombined into a single div1 element. This is marked by a milestone element of type "page-jump" followed by a pb element indicating the new page. Navigational text related to the continuation (e.g. "continued on page 37") has not been retained. Sidebars are treated as divN elements and in some cases have been moved from the point where they appear to the end of the article with which they are associated. In each case this is indicated by a pb element within the divN. 'Significant' gaps between paragraphs not corresponding to textual divisions or other marked-up features have been indicated by a milestone element of type "paragraph". Such gaps may have appeared as additional whitespace between paragraphs or with a typographical decoration such as an asterisk or dingbat. | |
