TRAGEDY STRUCK TWICE
Twice death has struck down a speaker as he talked in Waukau Methodist Church.
As the classmates of the old Waukau School gathered at the church on the
last Saturday in July 1946 for their annual Homecoming meeting and program,
the speaker was a native son, Attorney Fred Holmes. Since this was Waukau's
centennial year, Holmes, author of several books of historical nature, talked
about the history of Wuakau and of his own boyhood there. As he remarked
that his presence for the centennial observance somehow seemed as though
"things have come full circle," he collapsed and could not be revived.
The second death in Waukau Church was June 4, 1968. The Rev. Edward Saunder,
65, of Oshkosh, preached the Sunday morning sermon in Waukau and said he
was scheduled to preach his first sermon in his first church the next Sunday.
He collapsed without warning and died at the altar as his wife sat in the
congregation.
