'First Pres yterian Church, 1998
       Today's church family is descended from the 17 people who met and
organized as
       the First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago Rapids in 1848. Like most
families, as
       ours has grown and changed over the years, we have moved several times
and
       adapted our ways of doing things to accommodate those changes.
       But some things remain constant. Our desire to worship together and
to serve God
       to the best of our ability is as strong today as it was 150 years
ago.
       In 1998, First Presbyterian Church consisted of 1,000 members and
467 families.
       Our 1998 operating budget was $593,000. Approximately 200 children
and young
       people were enrolled in Sunday School. In addition, our programs included
Bible
       study and Sunday School for adults; Senior Presbyterian Youth (SPY)
for students
       in grades 9 through 12; JOY for students in grades 6 through 8; a
growing music
       program with vocal and bell choirs; adult and youth work trips; Vacation
Bible
       School; and Presbyterian Women, with five active circles. Untold numbers
of
       members served faithfully on the many committees which do the work
of our
       church. Still others taught Sunday School, led Bible studies, organized
retreats, and
       helped our pastors lead in worship. Our individual talents may vary,
but as our
       ancestors did, we remember Paul's words to the Corinthians:
                    "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same
Spirit;
                    and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord;
                            and there are varieties of activities,
                but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone."
