down and watched farmer
Hornung haul cut wood
from the meadow to the road
past the Triangle . . . . He is a
good, earthy fellow, simple-
minded and honest, far better
than many other villagers,
who live under a veneer of
transparently thin culture and
conduct themselves tacitly as
overlords of lMan and beast. I
could not help thinking how
small he looked, how symbolic
was his smallness in the field,
symbolic of man against all
earth, against nature ...
