PREFACE
        An Illustrated Historical Atlas of Manitowoc County Wisconsin by
G. V. Nash (Manitowoc,
1878) was the first detailed map of Manitowoc County to appear in book form.
In addition to
plats of each individual town, showing land ownership, and plats of the cities
and villages, the
volume features a business directory, a patrons' directory, lists of county
officials and
legislators, illustrations of public and private buildings, and a history
of Manitowoc County
written by John Nagle.
        The present work is an index to all names which appear in the atlas:
on the plats, in
the directories and lists, in the captions of the illustrations, and in Nagle's
history. Names
on the town plats are referenced by town, township, and section number; for
other names, the
source is cited in the "Section" column (references to the history
are cited by page and column
thus: p. 14/1). Every effort was made to reproduce the names in the index
exactly as they
appear in the atlas.
        The town plats are reproduced at the back of this volume. The atlas
is quite rare, and
available in very few libraries, but is in print in microfilm format in County
Histories of the
"Old Northwest", Series I, Wisconsin, Reel 34, published by Research
Publications, Inc., of
Woodbridge, Connecticut.
        John Nagle's history of Manitowoc County is the earliest published
history of the
county, and was used, sometimes too indiscriminately, by all later historians.
It was
republished by the Manitowoc County Historical Society in 1974 as John NaQle's
History of
Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, 1878. (Manitowoc County Historical Society.
Monograph 22), and that
edition has been indexed in Manitowoc County Historical Society Occupational
Monocraphs: Proper
Name Index (Manitowoc Public Library Reference Department, 1982). Unfortunately
at least one
major error occurs in that edition: the section on Franklin was omitted.
        The present index was constructed from a data base of the names,
keyed into the computer
during the 1986-1987 school year by student library assistants at the University
of Wisconsin
Center--Manitowoc County: Jennifer Aulik, Kristin Holm, Curtis Maples, Daniel
Spoentgen, Amy
Trost, and Robert Zipperer. Dr. Bhagat Singh provided invaluable assistance
and computer
programs.
