Another leaf . . . from Brazil
Once upon a time in a faraway country there was a
seed planted with loving care by the son of Willy the
Wolverine, named Wally. Wally dug the hole and
planted the seed, pressing it carefully with his paw.
He watched over the seed and protected it from the
birds, squirrels, and other wild animals. Everyday he
would water the seed, and wait for it to sprout. He
would sit under the sun and talk to the seed, and keep
it company as it grew. The seed grew into a tall
sturdy tree. Wally stayed its bodyguard. Many a hun-
ter would hide behind it and many children would play
around it.
Wally soon discovered the tree was the growing-up
tree, for the higher it grew the more it had to share
with people of all ages. The trunk was composed of
the faculty and administration. The limbs were made
up of the student body and each leaf was a single indi-
vidual joined to the whole tree and kept alive by the
nourishment from the trunk. The fruit of the tree was
oddly shaped and green and white in color. Wally
named the fruit of the tree as it fell. He named it
Spirit-Pride- Determination-Self satisfaction-Accomp-
lishment- Knowledge-Wisdom-Experience-Understand-
ingLeadership-Opportunity-Scholarship and the Love
of Life.
As each leaf blew away to find new exciting
places, there was another to replace it the next year
and as each piece of fruit fell to the ground, he
learned to understand his purpose in WHS: to protect it
and help it grow strong in mind and body. Wally
thought that it might take some people longer to find
the growing up tree than others. He gives us in the be-
ginning of each new year a guideline which we should
follow and which he hopes will help us to find what we
want in life.
THE GROWING UP TREE IS NOT EASY TO FIND,
YOU MUST HUNT WITH YOUR HEART,
YOU MUST HUNT WITH YOUR MIND.
YOU MUST LEARN TO BE PATIENT AND LEARN
TO BE WISE:
FOR THE THING THAT YOU SEEK IS A WONDERFUL
PRIZE!
