Dear Mrs. LaFOllette:-
You will be interested in knowing the result of
my conference with kiss Stearns and others.
After thinkingymur letter ever carefully for a day or
two I concluded you were right in regard te"one head", but T still
thin
aere should be several indenenient branches -nd they must b- grrnted
much independence and latitude. Miss 6tearns and I whAle differin/X
radically as to method, have rerqained perqenally most cordial. T was
glad she .as elected president of the W.*.W.S.A. but the latter vant, us
to unite under their constitution.
It seemed to me we aught tto hold a joint convention nf
all the suftrage societies arid ývith this idea iin iind I went to
Fadison
Wednesday, to confer with hiss _3tearns and r(I. Chynoweth. "'hey bet
approved of the plain,, which is as fol &ws:- A convention call will
be
s igne4
sent *tit by the presidente( including the men's league and college socie
for a convention to be held in Madison, the third week in Janury
probablU Thursday and Thursday. The Madison league will engage the
Woman's )uildin- for thý. regular sessions anid the assembly chamber
for
the evening in-etings. We are -ryin, to secure Brand nlitlock for the
evening. At the convention new officers awd iew constitution will be
discussed.
Ifiss Stearns ard I thought it would be a good plan
to have riso Whitney come if possible and round up all the college leagu
in the state, including the Normal girls of course. rdss Whitney was
here a year ago and I have written to lirs. Benedict wh. is in Pew York
