                      APPENDIX I
          THE FOND DU LAC LAND COMPANY
   In 1835 a corporation known as the Fond du Lac Land Com-
pany was formed at Green Bay. The company was formed for
the special purpose of promoting a settlement at the southern
end of Lake Winnebago. The shares in the new organization
were sold for $100 each. The original holders were as follows:

   James Doty was elected president and David Jones, George
McWilliams, F. F. Hamilton and W. H. Bruce were elected
directors. By 1838 they had 3,705 acres in what is now part of
the city and town of Fond du Lac. A. G. Ellis was the surveyor
who laid out the village plot.
