Costs to
Students
   The University attempts in every
-way-- -to-_ keep- charges --to -stuldents
low, so that no qualified- Wisconsin
citizen will be denied higher educa-
tion because of financial barriers. It
encourages continual expansion of
scholarship and grant programs.
Average total costs per year for
students living on campus at Mad-
ison are $1,845 for residents,
$2,645 for non-residents. For com-
muters, average costs are $1,350.
(These figures include estimates of
$400 for food at home, $125 for
commuting costs).
Financidl
Aids
  The University offers financial aid
to students through loans, employ-
ment, federal grants for low-income
students and scholarships admin-
istered by Student Financial Aids
offices for each campus. Parents of
students seeking aid are required to
submit a confidential statement of
their income, assets and liabilities,
since need is the primary factor in
the awarding of all aids.
   Many students requiring aid re-
ceive it from more than one source
 --scholarship funds are extremely
 limited, part-time employment can
 only provide from $400-$700 a
year, and loans cannot cover more
than- half -a student's expenses with--
-out -placing him under a staggering-
burden of debt upon graduation.
   Graduate student scholarships
 and fellowships-these are stipends
 awarded in recognition of scholarly
 achievement and promise-are
 awarded by the Graduate Schools
 upon recommendation by depart-
 ments and divisional committees.
 Graduate research and teaching as-
sistants are hired by individual de-
 partments. These scholarships, fel-
 lowships and assistantships carry,
 for non-residents, a reduction of
tuition to the resident rate. 0
