The UW System Board of Regents
rose to give a standing ovation when
Prof. Howard M. Temin was intro-
duced at its October meeting. A
week earlier it had been announced
that Prof. Temin shares the 1975
Nobel Prize in medicine for his
discoveries concerning the inter-
action between tumor viruses and
genetic material of the cell. The
New York Times editorialized that
Temin has contributed "towering
achievements in the history of
molecular biology (which) well
merit the Nobel recognition."
The professor thanked the Board
of Regents "for having provided...
an environment in which unorthodox
ideas could be considered
and established."
