A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF A XHOSA WOMAN, MAN, CHILD
"A man takes a wife, and they leave the premises of their parents' homes, preparing now to establish their own homesteads just as their fathers and mothers did before them." The man builds the new house. The wife gathers wood, prepares food, and makes sleeping mats. The man inspans the oxen ploughs the fields once he has acquired a plot for farming. A garden is also cultivated; it becomes "something uniquely related to women." The man is responsible for providing food for his family. The children are taught their responsibilities: a girl is taught to grind grain on a stone, a boy is trained to herd livestock.
