Sachs, Hans, Ammann, Jost / The printing arts: selected from a detailed description of all guilds
(1968)
Introduction
INTRODUCTION Jost Ammann's "Detailed Description of All Guilds," published in i568 by renowned Frankfort publisher Sigmund Feyerabend, depicts "all arts, crafts and trades from the highest to the lowest." The book is a collection of one hundred and fourteen woodcuts with rhymes by Hans Sachs and presents an excellent in- troduction to many old crafts. The pic- ture of the woodcutter is the oldest des- cription of its kind, and it is possible that the cut of the draughtsman is Ammann himself. All in all, these cuts present us a wealth of detail of the sixteenth century. The cuts of Ammann's that are related to the printing crafts appear on the fol- lowing pages, along with English verses.
