A SICK CHILD'S STORY
BY RUTH CARLBERG
ou know, I is aussul sick
I An' has to stay in bed,
All tovered up wif twilts and fings,
An tole wags on my head.
Where I swallow fings is aussul sore.
Hurts me when I dwink.
Another place is aussul sick,
At's up where I fink.
Daytimes isn't vewy bad,
Nursie weads to me,
An tells me stowies
An she has
Pichurs I can see.
But night times is the worst times,
I kick aroun' in bed,
An I can't sleep
Because the hurts
Are hurting my froat and head.
Nursie, an' mama, an' daddy, too,
All are sleepin' soun',
But I can't sleep, an' all I do
Is kick an' toss around'.
Sometimes when they're sleeping',
An' evwyfing is still,
I cwawl like a mousie
Outa my bed,
An' sit on the window sill,
An look at the moon
An' fink, an' fink,
An' fink, an' fink,
An' fink.
Sometimes when it's big an' bright,
I fink at it's a ball
At was frowed by a dreat big giant,
Who was fat an' aussul tall.
Sometimes all the moon ain't there,
Part of it's away.
Looks like the rine of a cantelope,
When you've eaten the good part away.
Some people say there's a man in the
moon,
But I don't fink one's there,
He wouldn't have no fings at all
'Cept clouds an' sky 'n air.
I fink the moon is workin,
To make my hurts go 'way,
Helps me more'n the doctor
Wif his bad medicine evwy day.
I s'pose some day the doctor'll say,
"Why, you're gettin' well real soon,"
He'll fink it's cause of his medicine,
But I'll know its cause of the moon.
At's how I fink about the moon,
When evwyfing is still,
Until at last I fall asleep
On the window sill.
