Eclipse
If some morning, a crack opens
in the sun, don't look up
to guess how much light we've lost already.
And don't try to make small talk, as usual;
your words will come out too honest
on street corners like dim confessionals.
If you must speak to your neighbors,
whisper, "Watch your step,"
and keep moving-cautiously.
Shadows can be dangerous, hiding
those dry, abandoned wells of old wrongs
anyone could fall into and be trapped.
But don't panic.... Remember this:
There has always been enough light
to last until dark. So far.
