Tölvur og gemsar

Íslendingar eru fremur nýjungagjarnt fólk. Þeir eru áhugasamir um nýja strauma og stefnur erlendis frá og fljótir að tileinka sér nýjungar. Þetta kemur t.d. fram í því að tölvueign er mjög almenn í landinu og Internetið verður stöðugt vinsælla. Í nýlegri könnun kom fram að tölva var á rúmlega 60% heimila í landinu og að tæpur helmingur landsmanna hefði aðgang að Netinu (Veraldarvefnum) á heimili, í vinnu eða í skóla. Tæp 30% Íslendinga nota Netið (Veraldarvefinn) reglulega, eða meira en eina klst. á viku að jafnaði.

Gemsar verða sífellt þýðingarmeiri í daglegu lífi fólks (Mobile phones are becoming increasingly important in peoples life's).

Farsímar eru í daglegu tali nefndir gemsar en það er íslenska orðið fyrir GSM síma. Orðið er gamalt í íslensku og merkir gemlingur sem er veturgömul kind! Það eru þó fyrst og fremst hljóðtengsl orðsins við skammstöfunina GSM sem hafa orðið þess valdandi að nú er gemsi það orð sem jafnan er notað um þessa tegund síma.

Computers and Mobiles

Icelanders as a people are rather keen on new things. They are interested in new streams and foreign developments and quick to learn about anything new. This manifests, for example, in the fact that computer ownership is very common in the country and that the internet is becoming more and more popular. In a recent survey, it was revealed that computers were to be found in roughly 60% of the nation's homes and that just under half of all Icelanders have access to the internet at home, work, or school. Approximately 30% of Icelanders use the internet regularly, or more than an average of one hour per week.

In daily speech, mobile phones are called "gemsar", the Icelandic word for a GSM. The word is an old one in Icelandic and means a "gemlingur", that is, a one-year old sheep. However, first and foremost it is the word's phonetic similarity to the abbreviation GSM which has lead to a situation where "gemsi" is the word which is always used for this kind of phone.

Per head of population, Icelanders own the most mobile phones in the world. There are about 200 thousand mobile phones in the country, meaning that about 72% of Icelanders own such a phone.
