| Notes: | Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) was a Swedish author and suffragist whose books were widely read and translated during the nineteenth century. Homes of the New World is an insightful account of her American journey in the years 1849-1851. She visited much of the United States and Cuba, recording what she encountered with a clarity that has made her account one of the classic descriptions of America. The 1853 work from which this electronic edition is derived is located in the Historical Society Library Rare Book Collection and Special Collections (Memorial Lib.) Other editions of Fredrika Bremer's works in the collections of the University of Wisconsin-Madison include: America of the fifties: letters of Fredrika Bremer, selected and edited by Adolph B. Encoding Description | |
| This is a pilot project to establish the infrastructure for creating an on-demand digitization program which will support distant access to library primary resources in book format which are important for historical study and needed for teaching, research and study by UW-Madison affiliated clientele, and not otherwise electronically available. TEI encoding is based on the UW-Madison Libraries Guidelines for Markup of Electronic Texts at the Reading Level (Version 2.0: http://uwdcc.library.wisc.edu/resources/etext/TEIGuidelines.shtml), with the addition of <sic>, <name> elements. No corrections have been made to the source text. Obvious typographical errors have been encoded with <sic> elements. No normalization has been performed on the source text. End-of-line hyphens have been eliminated, except for words normally containing a hyphen at that point. Where hyphenated words occur at the end of a page, the page break element has been moved to the end of the recombined word. All quotation marks have been retained (as " or '). Abbreviations have not been expanded. The two volumes of the source text have been combined into a single text file. In so doing, the title page of the second volume was eliminated from the file. Each volume constitutes a <div0> element. Place names have been encoded with <name type="place">, except for adjectival forms (e.g., "France" but not "French". No other names have been encoded. | |
