1. Gov. Henry Dodge of Wis. to Comr. of Indian Affairs, Mar. 26, 1847, discussing in detail the purchase of Chippewa lands and the holding of a treaty for this purpose, and enclosing: a. Letters of Nov. 28, 1846, and Feb. 13, 1847, from Subagt. James P. Hays of the Chippewa tribe, giving information on the extent and location of the Chippewa lands, bands, etc.; b. copies of letters of Nov. 28 and 30, 1846, addressed to Subagt. Hays by Gov. Dodge, requesting the above information; c. list of various bands of Chippewa, showing the number of Indians in each band and the treaty affiliation; and d. undated office memorandum concerning the remaining lands east of the Mississippi and north of the Wisconsin River to which the Indian title had not been extinguished.
